You got unlucky, the chips/fries in the uk are great. But I guess there are always going to be some places that fuck it up.

Brandon Sanderson even mentioned it in a video recently, he did a trip to the UK and was shocked how much better they were here than in the US.

I'm a very big exponent of British culture. British culture is absolutely dominant globally. We invented computers, our language is the Lingua Franca and the language of programming, science and the internet. essentially all the major sports were codified by Brits and spread around the world. the discovery of gravity, the industrial revolution, the world wide web, splitting the atom, TV, the documentary, lots of modern medicine etc etc etc.

But I will say that our food really is not great. Compared to France or Italy or Japan or even S Korea or Spain. We lost the culture during rationing in the war and we're only slowly getting it back. it really isn't that great and I don't want to defend it falsely. we just don't put as much effort and care into it as other countries do. people accept a lower standard here.

a really bad restaurant in Japan is better and cheaper than 95% of restaurants in the UK and that's not an exaggeration

Ok but what do you think of the chips.

rarely a fan. best chips I ever had were in Morocco, but generally if you want good chips go to Belgium or the Netherlands

I’ve started working with a Scot and he’s opened my eyes this week to the “pizza crunch”.

When I go north of the border I’m getting one.

Depends on the place. Also in my opinion chip shop chips shouldn't be very crispy.
