I maintain Orville is better Star Trek than Discovery

Pretty common take honestly. In most circles people will say the Orville (esp S2 and S3) are better Trek than anything we've gotten since DS9, or Enterprise if that one hit right. I'm far more mixed on Disco and don't really agree with the fervent hate it gets though I absolutely agree it's bad Trek, probably the worst ever made honestly considering the high bar set by the other series. I still kinda enjoyed it for what it was though.

I'm definitely a Lower Decks stan though, I was crushed when they stopped making it.

The absolute shit show of Strange New Worlds final season makes me look at Discovery in a new light.

I enjoyed stranger new worlds... Academy though, wtf.

I enjoyed SNW up until this season. This one has been trash.

There was already stuff in season 3 that I really didn't like. E.g. the military propaganda episode.

I enjoyed Academy, it wasn't perfect, but it was undoubtedly Star Trek, and what can I say... I love Star Trek!

Interesting other people's takes on things. I thought SNW was star.trek like and academy not Star Trek like. :)

Star Trek - Strange New Worlds on Paramount+. It just ended after 4 seasons. Set on the Enterprise during the Pike years.

There is still a shortened 5th season coming next year.

Ah, didn't know that. Thanks.

I have a hard saying that the Orville is better than Voyager but I agree otherwise

Lower Decks was close to GOAT

"Please, Star Trek, for the love of God, move past the TNG era and the temporal cold war! No, not like that!"

Prodigy is better trek than Disco and it’s a kids show

Disco was good scifi, just not good Star Trek.

Lower Decks is just amazing, I still can't believe they canceld it while everyone was liking it.

Disco was good scifi, just not good Star Trek.

Yeah this is exactly where I land with it too. I thought it was super cool visually and that it had some really cool ideas - the jump to the future to find a shattered federation had the potential to be such a cool launching point for more stories but they absolutely bungled it at nearly every opportunity. It was unfortunately clear that the writers just didn't understand that Trek special sauce, or they did and wanted to do something new (and ended up failing for it). Some of the plot beats were unbelievably contrived.

The scene where they make the jump to the future will live rent free in my head for a long time I think. I also really liked some of the future ship designs, and that scene where federation HQ separates and they all fly off in different directions.

Watching Disco was kinda like going to mcdonalds. It's fine as long as you don't think about it too much lol

My only problem with Orville was how much screentime McFarlane's creepily young girlfriends with the bad eyeliner got. Especially t he bitchy ensign who flew the ship in S3, she was an absolutely annoying character who did nothing good for the plot, and really ruined every scene she appeared in for me. I mostly liked Orville except all that.

I really couldn't get in to Lower Decks, I flicked it on right after I finished a DS9 rewatch and maybe I wasn't in the right frame of mind for it - does it actually have an ending? Or did they pull the plug before then?

It has a proper ending!

Holy hell, thats like top 1% of media these days then!

I will try again!

It's a fairly low bar

u/Throwthedamnballdad 20d ago

It is.
Discovery was so bad

u/DannyCvlty 20d ago

Just about anything Trek related out there is better than Discovery. Discovery is trash. The only redeemable thing about it is it gave us the SNW spin-off.

u/ButterCaramelPringle 20d ago

It's better than all Star Trek of the last 10 years.

The coldest of all hot takes lol

Dude Star Wars was better trek than discovery.

1

u/thefirstlaughingfool 19d ago

Eh, Discovery got better. Orville got worse. Take your pick.

1

u/Ofiotaurus 20d ago

Idk I like the first season of Discovery but it fell off hard

3

u/Throwthedamnballdad 20d ago

It was ok. It was really difficult trying to look past the Klingon redesign. It was a god damn travesty.

u/Shin-kak-nish 20d ago

I’ll go a step further and say that it’s better Star Trek than enterprise
