OC Star Wars vs Star Trek: a helpful guide [OC]
Star Trek 2009? Fun! The Force Awakens? Fun! And yet…

Doctor Who:
- Don't start with the first season, unless it's the new first season, but not the new new first season.
- Looks weird and alien but somehow also British.
- In summary: the Universe is Very Big™.
- JJ Abrams had nothing to do with it, but Chris Chibnall ruined it for him.

Dr. Who is special because you can't really start with the first seasons because of all the lost media.

You can! The audio for all episodes exist, so they have all been restructured into radio dramas with extra narration

I don't think Chibnall ruined it. It was definitely a step down in quality from Moffat though. I liked Chibnall's run much more than RTD's second stint.

You can start with the first season of TNG, but it's more just a list of episodes to watch rather than the whole season...

Yeah but tng isn't the first season.

She works best on ds9 when she gets paired with Odo. They have some really touching scenes together.

She’s also great in her final appearance in TNG.
The grief she had at losing her other daughter hits me as a father with two little ones.

DS9! was better than TNG is just about every way, but it's not remembered as fondly be the general fandom for some reason.
156
u/creatingKing113 20d ago
I agree that DS9 is the best. But it needs TNG to be good. TNG gives us the high minded idealism that DS9 uses to frame its difficult questions.
57
u/Made_Bail 20d ago
Great point. Especially Sisko's moral quandaries as the war goes on.

We also must consider that without the standards set by TNG we would not have just comparison for why DS9 breaks so many of the "classic" Star Trek rules. There is much more violence, deceit, more morally gray situations, and overall deviation from the idealism we often see in TNG. But without TNG as the trailblazer for those concepts, DS9 simply would not be nearly as effective.

It was a way ahead of its time show, in ways people don't tend to grasp if they just go on memory and don't rewatch. I did a total rewatch of all the shows during Covid (Trek was still on Netflix! what a time) and it really struck me.
Like, the whole thing is a Native American/Holocaust parable, the villain is a tremendously charismatic serial rapist and probably one of the most accurate depictions of fascism up-close on television, there's a gay romance and a transgender pansexual alien in the main cast, and an episode about the police killing black people.
In the 1990s.

DS9 was better than TNG and just about every way
Is it though? I think they’re simply two different things.
DS9 was a serial sci-fi politics TV show with wars, espionage, intrigue etc that occasionally touched on the lighter or episodic type stuff you’d find more in TNG.
On the other hand, TNG was an idealist sci-fi adventure-of-the-week show that occasionally touched on some of the heavier subject matter that was found more in DS9.

u/daemon-electricity 20d ago
DS9 had more commitment to a central plot line than TNG. Love TNG, but that alone made DS9 better. It cut down the number of filler episodes and seemed to commit each episode to building on the conflicts that were going on. TNG needed AI run amok and a Loki to keep it busy and there are WAAAAY too many filler episodes.
→ More replies (2)11
u/LikeALincolnLog42 20d ago
Personally, I generally prefer episodic TV more than serial narrative so I think that’s why I like TNG more.
That’s also why I think I wouldn’t feel comfortable saying one is better than the other. I think that’d be like comparing apples and oranges: they’re two different types of shows.

u/jaynon501 20d ago
As a viewer I loved Luwaxana. I thought she was very entertaining. Watching the crew figure out how to deal with her was great.
From the standpoint of the crew though, she was awful. I wouldn't have blamed Picard if he'd locked her in her room kicked her off of his ship.
16
u/ThePrussianGrippe 20d ago
As a relatively fresh viewer going in relatively blind I enjoyed her for the same reason I enjoyed the Q episodes: they each threw a different wrench at the crew that was otherwise mostly competent and they were nice standalones.
20
u/m4gpi 20d ago
In retrospect, her character was ahead of its time, whereas most of TNG's female characters are potted plants. We saw a chaotic shrew, but now she is a mature woman with total agency, sharp wit and wisdom, and no fucks to give.

u/SirRevan 20d ago
She is such a unique fun character I don't understand the hate. She plays the same role as Q. An agent of chaos who can also be unprofessional and put our working professional crew in unique situations. Unlike new trek which has everyone act like emotionally stunted children.

I kinda like that one episode where she falls in love with the scientist from the planet where the people plan their own suicide to avoid late life incapacity. The way she fights so hard against his culture, the federations anti-intervention laws, and his own cultural morality it almost showed her having a bit of charachter development. It wasn't made that way and it ruins the whole Luke I am your father part.
It's 4-6, 1-2, Some of the shows, 3, Andor, and lastly Rouge one. You can put 4-6 last but never watch 7-9

Before the sequels came out, a highly recommend order was 4,5,1*,2,3, then 6.
That way you get the reveal, then the fall to the dark side, then the redemption.

People are weird about star trek
Skipping season 1 of TNG doesn't even make sense because of Encounter at Farpoint is a great intro and skips Tashas whole starting arc.
Not every episode is 10/10 but even the worst are still good.
23
u/Krail 20d ago
Man, I kind of agree with skipping most of season 1. There's some bad stuff in there. Outside the first two episodes, It's not a good introduction to the series. I might recommend people go back to it after they're already into the show and care about the characters.

u/PurePerfection_ 20d ago
I've heard people arguing to tolerate the show until it hits its stride, but not to just skip every episode of a particular season. S1 of TNG, for instance, is not the strongest overall, but you still need to watch at least some of it. Otherwise, you miss the introduction of characters who will have significant roles later in the series like Q, Lore, Tasha Yar, or Lwaxana Troi. However, you can postpone TOS indefinitely without missing any context that's critical to enjoying later series.

Hate to be that guy....but measure of a man was season 2. BUT season one had datalore, 10101111100101001, and the neutral zone, which are great. Where no one has gone before is fun.
There's a lot of great pieces/parts of the weaker episodes in season 1 as well, but I find that you can go back and watch the leftovers after you have exhausted tng/other treks and still get great entertainment.
encounter at farpoint and skin of evil arent top trek, but they lay groundwork for a lot of stuff later on. especially the finale.

I was annoyed when Abrams got Star Trek…and furious when he got Star Wars
79
u/HanzoKurosawa 20d ago
Abrams is overly blamed for what happened with the sequel trilogy. The issue was not him. The issue was them not pre-planning the trilogy, and making it up film to film. That's not any one directors fault, that's a bigger studio issue. But I guess it's easier to blame one director.
51
u/Doomsayer189 20d ago
The sequel trilogy was severely hampered by TFA reverting everything to essentially the way it was in A New Hope, and that decision was largely due to Abrams.
11
u/Derigiberble 19d ago
Supposedly he wanted to blow up Coruscant and they basically had to talk him into a consolation prize of blowing up an entire system of heavily inhabited worlds instead like parents frantically jangling keys to keep a toddler from having a meltdown because they can't burn the house down.
28
u/dern_the_hermit 20d ago
I mean the OG wasn't really pre-planned, either. George had a pile of ideas but he's also been wildly inconsistent about what he "originally planned"... and he neither wrote nor directed the second or third film, anyway.
→ More replies (5)27
u/Nythromere 20d ago
There is a difference between a starting a brand new fanchise vs a decades long established franchise. George Lucas had no idea how crazy successful it would become. And he did have lots of plans for it but he had to keep reshaping it because, again, it was a brand new franchise.
Once Episode 4 released, the plans got more solidified. Now compare that to Episode 9 where the original director was fired and JJ Abrams had to finish the last installment of a 9 part saga under a strict deadline. Reshoots were happening weeks from release.
The whole "the OT didn"t have a plan too" is coping for the shit stain that is the ST.
→ More replies (25)10
u/total_idiot01 20d ago
Not just finish the last installment, but effectively restart the story after Johnson ended the trilogy in movie 2.
34
u/_Fun_Employed_ 20d ago
No, he really isn’t overly blamed, he literally can’t be blamed enough, because the REAL issues with the sequel trilogy all stem from him and The Force Awakens. He made a self referential sequel, with no imagination at all and nostaliga bait tripe.
And a coincidentally a bit of your screen name is an example of the Abrams failure. You see, he began the sequel trilogy by remaking a New Hope, all his inspiration clearly and creatively bankruptly from it. Who’s the Antagonist? The new empire and a new vader. What’s the big threat? Basically another even bigger death star. But what inspired the original Star Wars movies? Spaghetti Westerns, Flash Gordon, and Akira Kurosawa. But instead of basing his movies off of Star Wars original inspirations(like the first season of the Mandolorian does excellently), or even using new inspiration (like Andor did) he bases the new movies on the old ones…and you know what? It could have been done well, the question of intergenerational trauma, and legacy and how the past informs the future…it could have been done well, if it hadn’t been as shallow as possible and just a stupid nostalgia grab.

JJ is entirely to blame. Though the studio deserves some blame too. JJ started a bunch of story threads that don’t have a good way to conclude. Plus the whole premise was a recycled Star Wars story, the empire is back but it’s just called the New Order lame trash.
→ More replies (17)13
u/Cornelius-Q 19d ago
And that is what's baffling to me. Abrams is (allegedly) a fan of Star Wars.
Being a fan myself, if I had the chance to make the Sequel Trilogy, the last thing I would have done is just do a straight-up remake of the Original Trilogy. I'm not going to have a third Death Star. I'm going to have a functioning New Republic and New Jedi Order. I'm going to make the final chapter of the Star Wars Saga, not just recycle a bunch of stuff from the movies I grew up with.
Though we may be laying too much blame at the feet of Abrams. Maybe that is what Disney/Lucasfilm/Kennedy wanted? TFA was pretty much the same thing as Abrams' 2009 Star Trek -- take all of the toys out of the toybox and start over from scratch.

Star Wars. By far. JJ’s Trek universe can be retconned in an instant by showing the Kelvin incident being reversed somehow… I.E. two throwaway lines in the start and we’re off with kirk & spock or picking up with the Dominion aftermath… whatever you want in a dick-head free uni.
Trek he had a split timeline. Wars, he’s playing in the cannon sandbox and filling it full of cat turds.→ More replies (1)→ More replies (10)36

u/gollyRoger 20d ago
Ds9 still works, it's just the story of what happens when a utopia has to meet challenges they're not built to counter. It's very deliberately the story of what happens at the edges of a utopian society. Probably the closest we'll ever get to an adaptation of the culture

I know Star Wars is overall more popular than Trek, but the amount of GOOD Trek vs the amount of good SW is vastly weighted toward Trek in my opinion. I haven't liked any new Star Wars stuff aside from Rogue One/Andor. The prequel trilogy are objectively bad movies.

I think it's because there are a lot of action B-movies and wasn't much higher minded scifi at the time. Once a show goes action it seldom comes back (I'd say Acolyte, Obi-Wan, and Andor prove that Star Wars can manage it, and Lower Decks does a bit with Trek).

While I agree in a vacuum (Star Trek 2009 was fun!), the success of that movie led to execs trying to make it an action franchise and stumbling around in the dark for the last decade making an endless amount of new Trek that just doesn’t really tonally work.
(I should add that some of it DOES work and is fun - looking at you Strange New Worlds season 1 and 2 - but when I zoom out it’s just an era that just isn’t really… uh… working…)

SNW is missing some of the grit and depth of earlier Trek. It feels so safe and sanitized. While it is a standout of the newer Trek series, that's a low bar to clear. Lower Decks is great too, but it is hampered by adult animation tropes (everyone must be insufferable and obnoxious) and the shorter format.

I am a huge, huge Trek fan but if there is one legitimate criticism it’s that everyone seems sterilized. The Orville and the Abram’s Trek movies and Lower Decks are good influences on a series that has at times felt like a bad parody of itself for a long time.
Same thing Austin Powers did for Bond.
16
u/SigismundsChair 20d ago
The first Abrams movie isn’t really bad… but man does Abrams suck at worldbuilding and scale. He gave SW the same treatment. Made both settings as wide and deep as a puddle.
16
u/blondebuilder 20d ago
Well said. He’s really good at hype and creating a popcorn experience, but it’s all very surfacy.
He did the same with Lost. That show was gripping with all the mysteries, visuals, and action. Every episode hyped the next one with more questions. Everyone was waiting for a big explanation, but then it had the laziest ending ever. I felt robbed.

It's not bad but good lord is it dumb. Red matter makes black holes, sure, I can get on board with that. Spock detonated one inside Saturn's orbital radius. Even a third grader would ask "Wouldn't that be bad for the Earth?"
And he brought that same lack of knowledge into Star Wars where the speed of light is slow enough to allow a shot across a galaxy to be visible in real time from an unrelated planet. Also he had to retcon hyperspace engines onto a planet because a superweapon that can only fire two shots before it's completely worthless is bad. (Also it completed its objective with the first shot, the second is a pointless victory lap, which makes the climax of the film stupid on a writing level. JJ only knows how to accomplish the feel of story beats, but never bothers to construct the framework that holds them up. See: every major plot beat from TRoS.)
I could write a book about every way JJ's writing style has ended with hollow plot points that made his movies crumble before the test of time. Even by popcorn movie standards, he's a hack. Say what you will about Michael Bay's movies (and I do), but The Rock is pretty damned rewatchable.

Vulcan isn't even the bad one, since at least that stayed in the alternate reality. They blew up the "real" Romulus just to give their villain a backstory.

Yeah, that’s my big complaint about Abrams. He messed with a major portion of the “prime” universe by destroying Romulus like it was NBD. What does it mean for one of the major powers of that part of the galaxy to suddenly no longer have a home world? What does it mean for everyone else? Who cares? We gotta throw our Big Bad back in time so he can try to kill young Spock.
Meanwhile, the destruction of Praxis was the origin of the entirety of the plot of The Undiscovered Country.

Season 1 Episode 3 doesn’t exist, don’t worry about looking for it.

“Seth MacFarlane did a funnier version of it.”

The main problem with the Orville is that so many of the jokes were written by Seth MacFarlane.

The orville got very serious in seasons 2 and 3. They had a horror episode ala "The Fly" that has a great backstory and stakes in season 3

u/58275859 20d ago edited 20d ago
Yeah, I watched it through, and season two is okay, and season three is surprisingly good, but 90% of the humor is like the worst of Family Guy, and it really hurts a lot of episodes.

Star Trek: Blue space aliens called Andorians
Star Wars: Blue space aliens and a guy called Andor.
Completely different.

Star Wars: the future is kinda dark

Star Wars isn’t the future the first thing we are shown in most of the movies is “A long time ago in a galaxy far far away”.

The real difference is SW is about individuals doing amazing things and ST is about a teams working together to do amazing things.
JJ’s ST tried to bring in SW individualism and fell flat.

TNG was great, but Deep Space Nine was Absolute Cinema…
Change my mind.

I liked Babylon 5 better... Then again, I loved DS9 as well. But DS9 doesn't have Ivanova.

I like Voyager too. It was one of best ST starting episodes I've seen it.
Better than STTNG and DS9.

DS9 got better when they got into the dominion stuff and focused less on Sisko Jesus.
Although it was annoying that they emptied the entire command structure of the station into the defiant every time there was a mission

u/dragunityag 20d ago
Thats just ST.
Away mission? Better send at least half of our senior staff instead of any Ensign or JG.

Star Wars is if the republicans win every election from here on out, and Star Trek is if the democrats win every election from here on out.

Even if it's obviously not actually correct, it's kinda wild how accurate it still is.

Well, specific democrats. The democrats generally hate anyone trying to push us towards the star trek future. They're a bit more like the Ferengi, not evil evil but not exactly altruistic either.
Letting someone like Zohran from NY pick all our future political candidates forever on the other hand would certainly move us in that direction.
9
u/NoTransition8295 20d ago
So its more like if the democratic socialists were elected every time from here on out? (Since I think Zohran is a democratic socialist, I might be wrong though, I don't know too much about him due to living in a different part of United States)

u/lsf_stan 20d ago edited 20d ago
yes, not all Democrats are the same in the USA
The Democratic Socialists of America, DSA, are the ones not bowing down to the rich donors and big corpos
for example people like: NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Sentor Bernie Sanders, US House Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

I'd debate Force Awakens being good till the end of time.
That movie laid the groundwork for all the fundamental problems that plagued the trilogy, and killing the Jedi again off-screen + immidieatly blowing up the New Republic so Abrams can go rehash a New Hope was fundamentally the wrong choice.

I think it's referring to TNG. It's confusing to call it just Star Trek since there are different series.

“J.J. Abrams ruined it” cannot be stressed highly enough. That fucker doesn’t even have a basic, super-dumbed-down understanding of astrophysics. How many times did he have people on a planet’s surface looking up into the sky to witness an event happening in another goddamned star system?!

u/FALCUNPAWNCH 20d ago
I cannot stress how much I despise JJ Abrams and his mystery box with no payoff writing, and how he's marred two franchises with it. That and whitewashing Khan.

u/KlingoftheCastle 20d ago
It’s the cinematic Ponzi scheme. Asks you to invest, promises you a big payoff, then delivers nothing while the director collects a giant pile of money

Lost is one of my biggest TV disappointments ever. So much incredible mystery, writing, and world building that just spirals into a heaping turd of an ending.

I miss when Star Trek episodes were written by sci-fi authors and not by people who think sci-fi is just "pew pew pew" with MCU quips thrown in.

Star Trek also has "In Summary: The past was horrible". Especially WW3, the Bell Riots, and every time the Borg were on Earth.
