It is wild maybe it's because I joined right after the whole ex boyfriend and dad thing but I really don't like Fani at all each comic just paints her in a worst light to the point she's straight up unlikeable.
Again I'm missing over 100 comics of context but still I really do not care for her so far

u/omnicious 8d ago
Nah you got the gist of it. Reading more context let's you understand but it doesn't really redeem her IMO. She's not a bad person like Hitler or something but she also isn't someone you really root for.
47
u/NewLibraryGuy 7d ago
I root for her to get better, certainly. You get why she is the way she is, and she's mostly not malicious. She's still very redeemable.
8
u/Gripping_Touch 7d ago
I think the root might be that she had a traumatic childhood/teenage years. Because one of her relationships was straight Up abusive but she was so in love that she put Up with It. It might be that she feels the need to Connect intimately with people because she lacks warmth. But she doesn't know what a healthy relationship is so she gravitates towards making It a romantic/sexual relationship. Which often goes badly

u/heurekas 8d ago
I've read them all and yes, Fani is terrible.
But she's kind of like watching Final Destination. You know it's going to end badly and the characters are dumb, but it's fine.
Solid 9/10 comic.

It might help to know that she's in a polyamorous relationship with both of those guys.
She's always making bad decisions, though mostly only hurting herself and she did stand up to Deth'lam's very scary boss (Pes, aka Pestilence, horsewoman of the apocalypse) for him.

I find it really difficult to follow this comic. I want to like it. But I can’t keep the characters straight, and the arcs are confusing to me. There has to be something I’m missing. Or I need to go back and get more context. It seems like multiple parallel storylines that are meant to fit together - but don’t.
I’m probably just ignorant.
25
u/vindictivejazz 8d ago
There are a lot of flashbacks. This is one too.
You can tell bc the comic has the black borders. It’s a subtle distinction so don’t be too hard on yourself
6
u/Ssnugglecow 8d ago
Ok, this is good context to have moving forward. Thanks. I've been reading this comic for a while, and never knew this. Had no idea we're working with multiple timelines.
-11
u/ReddFro 8d ago
No. This can’t be a flashback. Deth’s in his human form. She hadn’t seen his human form before so this is current.
So somehow despite saying they’d get a short fat driver they randomly got exactly the wrong guy and instead of noping him out like she should have, Fani went full idiot on him while treating her best friend like trash in the process and probably making her offscreen father feel she’s a total slut cheating on her boyfriend in front of him.
Its really getting too dumb to appreciate.
11
u/ziggybuddyemmie 8d ago
Neither of those is Deth.
-9
u/ReddFro 8d ago edited 8d ago
You’re telling me the author used a different but very similar looking brown haired guy in a red shirt just after Deth had the exact same look? Why would he make it so ridiculously confusing for no reason?
9
u/ziggybuddyemmie 8d ago
Because Deth is a big buff dude with a big chin and Judd (who is named in the comic) is not either of those things? Idk
Edit: Like I heavily agree with perople saying this comic is confusing. I really dislike how the only difference for flashbacks is a thicker black line around the panels. The storyline is all over the place and is confusing as hell. But this comic in specific just doesn't have Deth so y'know had to point it out for your argument/conversation topic.
-6
u/ReddFro 8d ago
You can’t tell if this guy is buff or not, you never see much of him in this strip. I’m supposed to tell this guy’s Judd from a chin? Lol
8
u/ziggybuddyemmie 8d ago
He's also as short as Fani? Go back to the last comic, look at Deth, then come back and look at Judd and tell me they look the same LOL

Look, artists can do what they like with their works, but I find it really weird you refuse to admit a clear mistake that lost not just me but over 100 people who upvoted the initial comment. Mistakes happen, its ok, and I appreciate the art that I’m incapable of making, but acting like its perfect and all our faults for not memorizing a hairstyle, imagine height difference, and chin shape is just ridiculous.

Eh.. brown haired guys have different hairstyles, please read the comics again. Also the brownhaired guy in the latest strip isn’t as buff as Deth in the previous strip. And the buff guy in the current strip is blonde.

I would definitely check out more. She's a deeply damaged person whose suffered a lot of abuse, and she's very likeable the more you get to know her.
38
u/omnicious 8d ago
She's likeable as a spectacle. She's quirky and fun when you only have to deal with her six panels at a time. But it would take a certain kind of person who'd want to hang out with a person like Fani constantly. Most likely another "mess" of a person. She would be exhausting.
4
89
u/IlliasTallin 8d ago
Her past only makes her actions understandable, it does not make her any more likeable.
39
u/The_Bio_Neko 8d ago
Agreed. She's still awful but it's less "Wow this girl is just terrible" and more "Wow this girl is damaged to hell and back."
17
u/IlliasTallin 8d ago
Yeah, she would be exhausting to be friends with, cause you care about her and understand her.
8
18
u/TheJinManCan 8d ago
She's likeable in the sense of her intentions are innocent but she's just oblivious to everything, which gets her in trouble. She sees the good in everyone, unless you're her aunt, who vehemently treats demons like absolute garbage, and is the only character so far she gives push-back to.
But it's why she's the titular "Mess". You're not supposed to like her decisions. She's not a bad person, but her choices in her life make it frustrating to like her. You wanna root for her to do the right thing, and then you face palm hard when she doesn't.
It's why the demon is likeable. He's a good dude, through and through. But he's a demon. He's not supposed to be seen as good or having it together. Hence the juxtaposition.
Her past sucked absolutely, and with that knowledge we want to root for her to do well and do better. He's there and is inadvertently been showing her that one can do better, but with every passing day she's missing all of it, which makes us wanna scream and not like her.

How is swapping sexual innuendo with the pizza delivery guy while her boyfriend is standing right there innocent?

u/Electric999999 7d ago
She stood up to Pestilence too, because she was being mean to Deth'lam rather than directly to Fani.

That is partially the point, she has a lot of truama and shit and bad decisions, this is a flashback to when she had 2 boyfriends at the same time. She is slowly getting better to some extend but she still has a lot of progress to go, I am still hopeful for an actual healing/redemption arc for her.
15
u/BrutusMilk 8d ago
It’s the classic case of a character that’s insanely toxic and terrible but it’s ok because she has trauma. It paints a bad light on people that have managed to go through trauma and not come out as garbage people themselves.
18
u/WhiskeyAndKisses 8d ago
What makes you assume it is ok? Asking because a lot of people seem to think "protagonist do that = the author means it’s ok" like protags can’t be anything but pure good. (Sometimes they even miss the whole point of the plot, like people "calling out" Scott Pilgrim for dating a high schooler or that guy who complained about Ramona Flowers avoidant tendencies, aka her arc.)
3
u/caitlindrawings 7d ago
I agree, the author doesnt do anything to make it seem OK, in fact he consequences of a lot of her bad decisions can be pretty brutal. Granted I am still hopeful for a good therapy arc for Fani
5
u/NeroShenX 8d ago
It's a bit like IASIP. The MCs are terrible people but you enjoy watching them get their comeuppance + there's occasionally worse people out there that make the MCs more endearing.
6
u/AlexNovember 8d ago
As someone who has been following the comic, this is the first one I’ve seen that made it obvious she’s a cheater with no loyalty. “But she is like really sad though :(“ Doesn’t really make it better for me.
29
u/WhiskeyAndKisses 8d ago
Aren’t these three supposed to be in a poly relationship?
-6
u/AlexNovember 8d ago
Sounds like a good excuse to bang whoever, so even if that’s the case, my point stands. The boyfriend seems uncomfortable with the whole thing either way.

u/qetuowryip24680 8d ago
What a sad and shallow view of non-monogamy.
-5
u/AlexNovember 8d ago
I’m pretty happy not sharing my partner, thanks.
12
u/qetuowryip24680 8d ago
I didn't mention your partner...
1
u/AlexNovember 8d ago
Apologies if my reply was too shallow.
You said that it was a sad view of non-monogamy.
I retorted that actually I am quite happy being monogamous and not sharing my partner.
19
u/WhiskeyAndKisses 8d ago
Why is your own relationship relevant lol
I know it’s not the same, but you reminds me those guys who don’t understand homosexuality because they "don’t find men’s butts attractive". Like yeah but what does it have to do with you my man, you're not gay and that’s ok
13
u/qetuowryip24680 8d ago
You judged a person (character) negatively for their non-monogamous relationship. This is the sad and shallow part. I don't give a fuck what your relationship status is.

I think some of the point of the comic is to not like her, or to avoid being like her

1
u/Lolocraft1 7d ago
Are her and that other guy a couple? If they’re friends it’s funny for her to rizz the delivery guy. If they’re a couple she’s actively implying sexual stuff with someone else than her boyfriend/husband which is seriously messed up

Are motorcycles hot? I've been riding for years and only get extra attention for old guys at gas stations. They all want to tell me how they "used to have one just like it" and then desribe a bike that is only similar to mine because of how many wheels it has.
Idk, maybe i should start delivering pizza. Another option would be to date an old guy i guess?
49
u/Dpontiff6671 8d ago
I believe it's one of those things like playing guitar where there this image it makes you a chick magnet when in reality most of the attention you'll get is from other men (coming from a guitarist of 20 years)
6
u/Makkaroni_100 8d ago
I mean, if you playing in a popular Band, than its a different Story.
18
u/Dpontiff6671 8d ago
Sure but for every one dude in a popular band there's like a hundred thousand competent guitarists. Thats more just being famous lol
2
u/Youre_still_alive 8d ago
Nah man, you just need to go play some semisonic down by the quad, then it’ll be all different
3
2
u/Electric999999 7d ago
Sure, but that's being in a popular band regardless of your role and also only applies to celebrities.

u/Daracaex 8d ago
Yes. I tried sitting on my uncle’s once when I was a kid and burned my leg cause I was wearing shorts and he’d just been driving it.

Rule of thumb: every trait is attractive to women until you pick up that trait. Muscles, motorbikes, smoking, wealth. I used to pull way more when I was skinny, unfair.
21
u/Animated_Astronaut 8d ago
Any trait is unattractive if you acquire it for the sake of picking up girls, or flaunt it as a flirting maneuver. If you get big muscles and don't flaunt them that's attractive. If you're constantly going on about it, we'll...

u/Gold-Vehicle-2863 7d ago

Okay.
Motorcycles vibrate. The "biker" ones much more so than the crotch rockets.
The "biker" ones are also associated with bad boys.
That is all.
0
u/GachaHell 7d ago
Women tend to enjoy the vibrations.
Some of us just drive down dirt roads real fast to try to replicate it.

Maybe they ended up hooking with each other.
