yall don't like the taste of coffee? it's genuinely one of my favorite beverages, nothing beats a warm cup in the morning with a splash of cream. or a cortado. the smell and taste of it instantly puts me at ease. the caffeine is nice, but i don't mind a decaf either.

100%. I drink decaff just to get at least a hint of the taste of the real thing when I am genuinely overcaffeinated lol. Coffee has so many flavor profiles though! Some people here, saying its dirt water... that's like saying tea is just leaf water! Lol.

To be fair I did start drinking coffee when I was 13 and I think it's a bit of an acquired taste, like a sushi or beer.

We learned we had to keep the sashimi away from my sister's 3 year old cause she just stuffs it in her mouth by the handful

u/hunterman25 4d ago

i see i have competition. i'd eat it by the handful too if i could afford it

Amateur, I has my first cup of coffee when I was 7!

Of course, I didn't start drinking regularly until university.

That said, you should try tea... tea is a huge world compared to coffee!

Sweet summer child 😉 I had my first taste at 2,5 years old and started drinking coffee during family gatherings and holidays when I was around 4. I've always enjoyed somewhat bitter flavours. Kids are really weird.

u/treelife365 4d ago

Wow! You must be the early coffee queen/king 👑

When I was a kid, my mom would cook bitter melon and I hated it 😂

1

u/VintageVogue1947 3d ago

There are probably some people who are even worse, but I'll hold that crown for now 🫅🏽

Ooh, what's bitter melon? I haven't heard of that before 😀

2

u/hunterman25 4d ago

oh i'm no stranger to tea either :) if i had bullshit money i'd love to visit china or somewhere else with a huge tea culture to sample as many as i possibly could

2

u/treelife365 4d ago

You don't need a huge sum of money!

Just like any other overseas vacation ☺️

I’d say both are a huge world. I drink both. And roast my own coffee 90% of the time. Coffee can be amazing and has many varieties, natural, honey, washed, the type of coffee plant, where it’s grown, how it’s roasted will all impact the flavor.

By that said, there are few things in life worse than a bad cup of coffee or tea.

1

u/treelife365 4d ago

Wow, nice! Sounds like you know what you're talking about 😊

I mean a lot of it has to be that they've only been exposed to instant coffee or overroasted chain coffee that does taste like cigarette butts.

1

u/hunterman25 4d ago

i think i started drinking it around 10, haha... i suppose having a caffeine addiction from a young age would make it taste a lot better :P

Tea is leaf water.

I blame my church's men's group. We had a woodlot, and we'd spend weekends splitting wood in the fall.

We started someone would put an old school percolator on the stove in the office trailer. Two hours later we'd take a break and drink coffee.

Drinking that when you're 13, when you finally encounter good coffee, you're going to love it.

Beer is different. My friends and I can find a beer for anyone.

Scotch is an acquired taste

Honestly I'm a bit like that, not to the point of being "death before decaf" or being an asshole to people who drink it, but it just feels (illogically) weird to me. I guess coffee having caffeine in the first place also creates a habit of drinking it at certain moments/hours of the day. Also I'm Italian when we mainly drink espresso/moka which is a small quantity each time. I've gotten into different coffees within the last year and got a pour over. I recently got a mixed box with single origin coffee beans from around the world, one of them is decaf, I only tried it once and it was quite good. I still have an almost psychological block to remember that I have It and make it when I don't need caffeine. Like I drink caffellatte with moka pot, then a large pour over later in the morning, then again moka pot after lunch and maybe another espresso during the day. Sometimes I feel like having more coffee in the afternoon/evening, I should just do decaf.

I love the smell of coffee. But never ever enjoyed the taste.

u/DrowAboveground 4d ago

This is exactly it. I know so many coffee snobs who love to say “death before decaf” like it’s proof of their love for coffee. Well I have to limit my caffeine intake and I love coffee so much I will absolutely drink decaf.

I used to love coffee until i removed caffeine from my diet.

A few months later, all cravings for coffee died. Doesnt really taste good to me anymore either, unless it’s inundated with sugars and syrups.

Point being, addiction is a hell of thing.

Wtf is creamer

2

u/hunterman25 4d ago

well, i'm referring to either half and half or heavy cream, not "coffee creamer". should probably clarify. what i meant was milk with higher fat content. "coffee creamer" is mostly just milk processed with a ton of oil and sugar, which i don't care for

2

u/Avia_NZ 4d ago

Huh. Why not just use milk?

1

u/hunterman25 4d ago

gives the coffee a richer flavor. milk is good too, but the touch of extra fat makes the best flavors in it pop. same reason butter is good on toast.

2

u/Avia_NZ 3d ago

Fair enough!

I loved the smell of it as a kid, but didn't like the taste. Fast forward, eventually I looked into getting some locally roasted columbian stuff, and it tastes so good. I developed the taste for cheaper, more bitter coffee, so I don't mind it as much, but it definitely took tasting "good" stuff first to get there.

If there was a cup of piss and a cup of coffee in front of me, I'd seriously spend time considering which one I'd rather drink. I'd probably go with the coffee, but it's disgusting rancid stuff.

I love the “real” coffee. The one they’ll serve you in Italy, Japan, Turkey, or Venezuela.

The watered down beverage in bucket-sized paper cups you get in the US… is a different story.

5

u/rylasorta 4d ago

Wait until you learn about making your own coffee! Then you can have it exactly how you prefer; nobody need serve you, you do it yourself! Sometimes I make espresso, or French press, occasionally a bold Turkish drip... All from a kitchen located in the US! No paper bucket required!

1

u/Vic_Connor 4d ago

Used to do it for a while. With an Italian and Turkish manual coffee makers and ground coffee made from beans that I hunted down during my travels — from Costa Rica, Middle East, and so on.

Now I’m just content to spend an hour in a cafe in Kobe, Japan, enjoying their “drip coffee”… or one of those tiny Italian cups of concentrated caffeine.

I have no talent to make my coffee at home as delicious as they do…

2

u/hunterman25 4d ago

oh yeah. hard pass on the gas station coffee unless i'm desperate for caffeine. i'd kill to try some turkish or cuban coffee though, it sounds delightful

2

u/CompetitiveSport1 4d ago

The watered down beverage in bucket-sized paper cups you get in the US… is a different story.

Don't forget that they homogenize the beans and roast out the unique flavors!

Seriously it's incredible how hard it is to find well-made coffee in the US.

2

u/Kankunation 4d ago

it's gotten a hell of a lot easier depending on where you live. Mid-west? Burnt and black is all they need. West coast? High quality singe-origin coffee servered any way you like on every corner.

2

u/DaaaahWhoosh 4d ago

Yeah it's like people who say they hate steak but only know about the well-done chewy bricks their parents used to feed them. A thing done badly is bad, a thing done well might be good. Not to mention all the other things that are "an acquired taste" like alcohol or anything spicy.

2

u/Kevadu 4d ago

The US has incredible coffee if you go to one of the many smaller specialty shops here and not just Starbucks or something.

1

u/Vic_Connor 4d ago

Oh, no argument there. I’m sure they do.

Really struggled to find a good one around Chicago when I stayed there for a couple of weeks.

1

u/ShotLet1550 4d ago

Ah yes, bitter bean water, my favorite. I don’t even like chocolate as a “sweet”, coffee smells great but has never tasted good to me and I think it should be used more often in baking to actually make it palatable as just a spice or drinks like jamocha shakes

2

u/femboycbt 4d ago

Coffee does NOT have to be bitter if yours is bitter either your taste buds differ or you made it bad or the coffe was shit

3

u/Kankunation 4d ago

Nah we have to be honest. Even good, High quality coffee brewed properlyy is still bitter. Certainly it's less bitter, often floral or nutty even, but there is always some bitterness.

Some people just have zero tolerance for bitter, while others are less perceptive to it or even crave it. The latter is us coffee lovers, but the former is people who think broccoli or cabbage is bitter and have difficulties with consuming tea or semisweet chocolate because of the bittering compound in them

My wife is one such person, can't handle even the slightest bit of bitter in anything and there has been many times I've cooked something I find delicious but she tastes as disgustingly bitter. Couldn't even tell you what it was that tasted bitter to her because I can't perceive it at all.

(Also fwiw I think a lot of times people also consider acidic things to be bitter. Idk if it s language thing or different taste buds but I've been told o is tlfee occasion ls they something was bitter because of an added acid. Which unfortunately in terms of coffee in another thing the bitter haters would latch onto)

u/femboycbt 4d ago

When you say bitter my mind goes to a harsh taste coffee however does not have that harsh taste if brewed properly thats all im sayin

1

u/thisisatypoo 4d ago

But it's still bitter.

1

u/ShotLet1550 4d ago

Every coffee I’ve had ever whether from a fancy machine or fancy cafe tasted like shit and the amount of sugar needed to cover up its taste is never worth it, I won’t be gaslit

1

u/Char-car92 4d ago

Yall talk about coffee like a tweaker talks about meth

1

u/Kevadu 4d ago

Yeah, coffee is delicious. I will drink decaf just so that I can drink more coffee.

Coffee spoils quite quickly. Most people drink rather stale coffee. hence why most coffee tastes shit
