If you don’t know… chicken is the species. Hen is adult female. Rooster is adult male….

Edit: i was saying Catholics are Christian. They were saying they are not they are just Catholic.
50
u/user_name_taken- 1d ago
Your Catholic ex believed Catholics weren't Christian?? That's worse than the chickens honestly.
21
u/ConspiratorM 1d ago
Some Christians say Catholics aren't proper Christians because they pray to Mary and saints for intervention, thus effectively making them polytheists.
13
19
u/user_name_taken- 1d ago
That's different though. An Evangelical saying Catholics aren't Christian I can see, but I can't see a Catholic, the original Christians, saying they're not Christian.
Also, idk if polytheist works if you don't worship them as God's. They still only believe in one God, well I guess, actually, the three different versions of that one God, but that's all Christians I believe. The others are just considered like holy figures who have pull with God. It's weird.
Catholics are big on the hierarchy because some people are considered to be closer to and more important to God. It's like asking someone else to pray for you, which all Christians do. Catholics just believe certain people's prayers carry more weight because they're higher up in the hierarchy. And the more people you have praying for you the more likely God is to actually hear/answer your prayer because apparently it's like politics. You know, if you get a lot of people to like sign the petition and you get like some big celebrities pushing it and maybe like a lobbying group, God's more likely to pass the bill for you, lol.
6
u/ConspiratorM 1d ago
Ah, I just scanned the sentence and didn't pick up on it was a Catholic who thought they weren't Christian, as someone who was raised Catholic I'm pretty sure the term Christian was applied to us in church and school. That is odd.
4
u/user_name_taken- 1d ago
Yea, it's worded weird. But it would be really strange. I was also raised Catholic and the word Christian was 100% used repeatedly.
7
u/Nu-Hir 1d ago

Catholics being the OG Christians really depends on which side of the schism you're on.
6
u/whiskey_epsilon 1d ago
Both sides say the Catholics are the OG Christians, just that they consider themselves the Catholics: Roman Catholic Church, Orthodox Catholic Church (it's their official name).
The easterners being Orthodox not Catholic is Roman propaganda.
5
u/KamuikiriTatara 1d ago
I mean... anyone who actually reads the Bible will know about God's siblings who are fellow patron warriors for different city states who fight amongst each other. The Israeli patron Adonais, YHWH, Jehova, whatever name you wanna call them, isn't even the most powerful of their siblings and has a parental figure who is more powerful and divided human domains and gave them to their children. The Bible explicitly recognizes other gods. There are stories about how you can only worship your city state's God on their own land, so travelers brought wagons of dirt from home to pray on so they would t accidentally pray to the wrong god.
Abrahamic practitioners usually know very little about their own traditions.

Weird, I've only heard the idea of the Catholics aren't Christians from Evangelical Protestants. Very strange that a Catholic was saying that. I haven't been Catholic in a very long time but I'm pretty sure that would actually be considered sacrilegious

I went to school with someone who INSISTED Catholics weren’t Christian because they worship Mary.
8
7
u/CurtisLinithicum 1d ago
For them "Christian" means "Follower of Christ's Teachings Only" - since Mary, the Saints, the various elements adopted from Roman state religion, etc are extra-Biblical, it therefore follows that Catholics no longer fall under that specific definition (cue accusations of pagantry, etc).
You may call that dumb - I do - but from within their framework, it's comparable to e.g. Christians and Muslims not being Jews or Buddhists not being Hindu.
→ More replies (1)5
u/plantyjen 1d ago
Yes, that’s exactly it. Protestants call them polytheistic, pagan, idolators. And yes, it’s dumb.
3
u/Available-Half-40 14h ago
That's funny cuz... we don't. Not like God anyway. When you pray to God you're praying to the big man Himself and asking for His help. If you pray to Mary you're basically being like "hey, could you bring this up with your son when you see him again?"
... because it would be stupid to think that the mother of God has zero sway over His actions. That's His mom.
The worship of God is... well, worshipping God. The worship of Mary is basically just "respect for giving birth to the lord and savior." Not the same level at all.
At least, I think. Haven't been to church in a good long while.
3
u/cthulhu_on_my_lawn 1d ago
Some people raised by really, uuuh, casual sort of Catholics view it as more of an ethnic group? Like being Jewish. I knew one person in college who was like "I thought I just inherited being Catholic".

u/CurtisLinithicum 1d ago
"Cultural Catholic" is very much a thing, albeit lower key than "Cultural Jew", as a rule.
2
u/TuvixHadItComing 1d ago
Interestingly I've been to a non-denominational (but with very Pentecostal roots) church that affirm weekly that they are catholic (lower case) when doing the Nicene creed. In that sense catholic just means universal but it's funny to imagine a capital C Catholic asserting they aren't Christian, they're Catholic, and then have a charismatic "keep your tongues discreet, we have visitors" Christian be like "um...actually..."
9
u/Unfortunate-Incident 1d ago

2
u/kalel3000 1d ago
They are Christian since they believe in Christ's divinity.
They just aren't what some people refer to a "Christian" when they mean like a protestant/baptist/methodist/other Christian denomination.
6
u/tyrified 1d ago
Because those are all heretical apostate cults of the Catholic church. It's how they express their insecurity about it.
→ More replies (1)2
u/CurtisLinithicum 1d ago
True, but the "Adherent to the Nicene Creed" definition of "Christian" which insiders seem to prefer clouds this (vs e.g. Unitarians).
4
u/kalel3000 1d ago
Not sure which part. But the nicene creed clearly defines Jesus as a god that Catholics follow/believe in.
They may consider it polythiest because of how the trinity is defined. Which is not a Catholic belief. But even if it was, the term "Christian" means a follower of christ, presumably as a god, so Catholics would still be Christian....just not how some other religions define "Christian".
3
u/CurtisLinithicum 1d ago
Unitarians (by definition) reject the Trinity; likewise Arianism holds Jesus was a temporary vessel, so they're out. Mormons are, in a sense, tritheist not trinitarian. Likewise any church that only claims a spiritual resurrection.
Contrast, e.g. the "follower of Jesus's teachings" definition common amongst outsiders, which'd include all the above as well as Jeffersonian Christians who reject Jesus's divinity.

"Artem autem illam mortiferam et Deo odibilem ballistariorum et sagittariorum adversus christianos et catholicos exerceri de cetero prohibemus sub anathemate."

Terminology a little harder with cattle - cows are female but everyone calls them all cows. I think accepted usage has moved toward the latter.
5
u/Pricklypearl 1d ago
To be even more specific, a cow is a female bovine that has had a calf. Before that the female is a heifer.
Honest question, because I do not know: Do you think we call them cows colloquially because of milk cows?
6
u/mamabearette 1d ago
I have no idea! But if someone sees a field full of cattle they always say “cows,” I guess it may feel clunky to say “look at that field full of cows, steer, bulls, heifers, and calves” but you can say “cattle.” A singular bovine is routinely called a cow without knowing its age/gender/etc.
3
u/Pretend-Conflict4461 1d ago
Where does the term "moo moos" fall in all of this. Is it fair to call them all "moo moos" instead of "cows"?

What's the proper singular of cattle? "An animal of the bovine persuasion? “
5
4
u/AndyLorentz 1d ago
Bovine would be the proper sexless singular. Cattle itself is plural only. Interestingly, the word is a variation on “chattel”, and is closely related to “capital”. It used to be used for all livestock, not just bovines. The Old English word “Cu” came from the Proto-Indo-European word for bovine.
3
2
u/NoBookkeeper3523 1d ago
They are cattle but everyone except for ranchers calls them all cow, and half the time ranchers I grew up around called them cows unless they were giving a count of how many cattle they had. A toilet is called a water closet on plumbing blue prints but most plumbers call it a toilet (really that call it a shitter)
3
u/Pricklypearl 1d ago
I mean we raised cattle and fed the cows, watered the cows, checked the cows, branded cows. I get the colloquial meaning. I was just wondering why we call them all cows.
→ More replies (1)2
u/MauveDragon 14h ago
That would be my take. I grew up on a dairy farm. Always referred to bovines grown for beef as cattle. Calves are calves until they are weaned, then they are either heifers or bulls. And as you stated, once they have had a calf, they become cows (milkers until they go dry).
3
u/CurtisLinithicum 1d ago
Slightly ironic, given bull and cow were adopted into Pidgin for "male" and "female". E.g. Me have one piecee cow-chilo, one piecee bull-chilo = "I have one daughter and one son".

English needs to popularize the word "bovine" so we have a gender neutral common term for the species.
It won't happen, I know. But it should.

u/ErisGrey 1d ago
I feel this is making a joke, or confusing the statement about Peacocks. All Peacocks are male, all Peahens are female. The group is collectively called Peafowl.

3
u/A--Creative-Username 1d ago
The issue (I think) is that they're thinking of cows
7
u/Odd-Consideration153 1d ago
Maybe, but also very possibly not. I've seen plenty of people who think chicken=female and rooster=male. I've also seen plenty of people who don't know cow=female that has had birth, heifer=female who hasn't given birth, bull=intact male, steer=castrated male, cattle=overall term for all.
→ More replies (1)4
u/MattieShoes 1d ago
So.... you've kind of lost that battle on the second one. Since there's no generally agreed on gender-neutral term for cattle, cow has become that term.
Webster's definition has this
c: a domestic bovine animal regardless of sex or age
Even outside of that, having given birth is not a requirement, though that may be where context starts mattering a lot. Like if you're talking about "cows and heifers", then it matters because that's the difference. If you're talking about "that herd of cows", I'm not going to assume every single one of them has spawned.

technically chickens can asexually reproduce in very very rare circumstances. it’s called parthenogenesis and while the vast majority die in the egg or shortly after there is one documented case of a parthenogenesis baby surviving. due to the way chromosomes are expressed in birds (ZZ male, ZW female) a parthenogenesis baby is almost always male.
other species of reptiles are much more successful at it though, with some species relying solely on parthenogenesis for reproduction like mourning geckos. the offspring is all female except on very rare occasions.

Farmer here. From a linguistic perspective, chicken works just fine regardless of age or gender of the animal. Everybody knows what a chicken is. The same goes for "cow." In the cattle industry, cow, heifer, bull and steer Jane their specific meanings, but for non-farming folk cow gets the point across fine. People who nitpick like this are the type of people who hear a fact on their radio on the way to work and then can't help but spew it to every person they run into throughout the day like they're smarter than everybody around them. The one that gets me is animated boy cows with udders.

Can you elaborate? Also, in regards to horns, a lot of people have the misconception that only bulls have horns, which just isn't the case.

It’s a common animation error. The most notorious one I know of is the movie Barnyard where the male main character has an udder for no explained reason.

I think the reason that we don’t want to see a giant cow dick swinging everywhere needs no explanation.

Chicken is the animal, hens and roosters are the names
given to female and male chickens respectively.I could see this as being a common misunderstanding similar to a Cow is used to refer to Cattle in general, but a Cow is a female Cattle, and a Bull is a male Cattle.

Cow is a bos taurus that’s been pregnant specifically. & therefore produces milk.
The nulliparous females are called heifers.
Bulls are only post pubescent males that haven’t been castrated.
Males castrated as calfs are steers. & males castrated after puberty are called oxen.

Let me understand: you got the hen, the chicken, and the rooster. The rooster goes with the chicken. So, who's having sex with the hen?

People are always asking to pet my dogs when I walk my bitches. I’m so sick of the ignorance.
