AI as a Management Tool for Deskilling and Deprioritizing Labor - Taylorism for Knowledge Work

BEFORE COMMENTING please READ RULE 1 OF THIS POST

THESIS:

“Implementing AI” is a management strategy to decompose skilled roles into simpler tasks, assign those tasks to cheaper labor or automated agents, and capture the margin between what a professional cost and what the replacement stack costs.

This post is basically an extension of Harry Braverman’s 1974 “Labor and Monopoly Capital” updates it to the AGE OF AI

In a very basic summary Braverman makes the basic assertion by careful study of Frederick Taylor: that capitalism replicates, iterates, and improves itself by taking skills from talented individuals and giving them to the system over time.

In addition to owning the means of production as we all know, business owners also strive to maintain a monopoly on knowledge.

Business owners depend on a monopoly of knowledge. Basically, capitalists and managers want to capture the tacit knowledge possessed by skilled workers, codify it, and hand back only fragmented, routine tasks to the labor force.

This has been observed and documented since the 1940’s and studied in business school and is the underlying research behind most assembly line and factory work. Taylorism is behind the Henry Ford assembly line. The modern labor regime is a regime of Fred Taylor.

In 2026 capital commodifies not just physical production, but services, office work, and intellectual labor. Even our attention is increasingly commodified as demonstrated by Chris Hayes in his book, The Siren’s Call.

In short Taylorism has come for the white collar worker, and AI is the new assembly line to set the pace of work and the rate of extraction.

What are the implications for the future of white collar work if these macro economic incentives hold in a basic sense?

RULE 1 of this post *PS and before you comment “ThIs is Written by AI”. No. It’s not. I wrote this with my thumbs. IF YOU troll with “is this ai?” ,“This is ai” I am blocking you and moving on with no response.

Your thesis seems 100% correct, but the house of cards they are building is simply unsustainable

These people have more money than brains and absolutely no concept of reality

The resources needed for the AI network to function far exceed the cost benefit analysis of just paying people to do the work

We will all starve if everyone is just expecting someone else to do it for them, run out of water, raw materials for the bullshit robots, etc

I agree, the current elite cohort of business owners seem greedy and short sighted and there is a lack of real leadership amongst the oligarchy class.

Because here is no automatic mechanism that turns cheaper production into shared prosperity.

It’s going to require real leadership and will require hard political and institutional choices involving: unions, tax policy, regulation, public stakeholders.
