It's different than patterning imo, the anchor similar to the sticky note have a multiplication property. The patterning also has that property but one of the copies for some reason is imperfect/different. Destroy that one imperfect copy and you destroy the other copies.

Think the patterning is more timeline/multiverse related.

Don’t forget about the clock threshold too

Yeah, all the duplicate clocks are from the threshold, not the Anchor. They just happen to be in the same area.

What the anchor actually does, judging from its documentation, is try to take apart anything that shares material with something put into the black sphere that it can generate. So throw in a metal bucket, metal ship falls apart. Drop in a ranger, other agents in the area start "falling apart" (vomiting, vertigo, loss of fingernails). All the stuff around it seems to come from the Hiss corruption.

Oooooh!  I love this.

Want to have some fun?  Go listen to Ahti’s openning speech.

Are you able to break down what he says? It's been a long time, and I don't have the bandwidth to redownload it right now

There you are. You are here about the job. Janitor's assistant. You need to go to the interview. Go that way to the elevator.

Very good. I'm Ahti, the janitor, by the way. You'll work for me. You can say I sent you. If they don't hire you, niin johan on helvetti [well, isn't this a hell].

There be work for the axe, take them behind the sauna, jumalauta [take them out back and execute them, god help].

Jesse, internally: Ahti the janitor is a friendly face in my book.

Better than somebody with no face at all. Think about it, no face.

All Ahti lines and translations

Unless I'm missing something very obvious, only "axe", "execute", and "no face" caught my attention here, but it feels like an enormous stretch, even for Remedy.

If I were to guess, these things pop out:

• The Director works for Ahti

• The Board also works for Ahti (or perhaps isn't as integral to the Oldest House as the FBC believes)

• The Board can be terminated

• The Board, being a faceless entity, cannot be trusted (though "no face" can also apply to Arish

• Ahti can hear Jesse's thoughts/inner monologue and responds to them accordingly

Things a lot of folks have picked up on, but if you aren't a lorehound or haven't replayed the game maybe you didn't think much of it.

I was thinking more about direct connections to Resonant (like the point about patterning from OP). So, yeah, maybe I was trying to think too hard, since I’m pretty deep into the lore.

Edit: and yeah, I listed “no face” because of Arish, and “axe” and “execute” because of Dylan

Well, in Resonant Jesse certainly seems to have taken the Board behind the sauna and terminated them at least. I personally wouldn't be surprised if she let the Former take charge again.

I hope we get to know how the Board got a demotion to a weapon power-up lol. Definitely Jesse/Former machinations:)

u/pheirenz 2d ago

It’s heavily implied that the Aberrant is a piece of the Nail, I don’t think it’s a huge leap to imagine Jesse outright removing it and thus the Board

2

u/1ucius 2d ago

Yep, I think I phrased it wrong. i know it’s related to the Nail, a piece of it, but we don’t know how they ended up in it.

id say The board dont work for Ahti so much as they know better than to fuck with him. When someone is that calm in the face of whatever, can just walk out of a lockdown like that, treats the mold and hiss like anoying pests. Im going to guess if Ahti got angry with them they would probably not be able to stop him.

u/sapphic-boghag 2d ago

'Work for' was the wrong phrasing, I meant they're probably squatters/freeloaders in the Oldest House.

Commenting cause I’d also like to know and can’t replay control 1 right now

Other people covered the opening.  Ill expand to later speech:

You got the job […]  It happened in the last drop

The drop: he’s referring to the beginning of the Hiss crisis.  Ahti the janitor has to clean up the garbage being dumped into the Oldest House by the Lake House experiment:

The Lake House project periodically opens a gateway to the Dark Place and drops Alan Wake-clone/slop pages into it as well as soulless chaos art from the tortured artist.  At some point, Mr Marmont created a bridge to the Oldest House.  I’m unclear on how it happened, but in the very last run, The Tortured Artist painting is dropped in. That is the Hiss explosion.

With the project running off the rails, the Wake-copy-of-copy-a-copy pages churn uncontrollably.  This will lead to the events or Resonant

Regarding how Marmonts opened the bridge: the artist they kept imprisoned killed himself and made a painting with his own blood, the "self-portrait". This was the first real art their project has produced, so the Dark Presence got interested and the painting became the gateway. Before that happened, nothing indicates that they ever succeeded at a connection with the Dark Place.

Also, the events of the Lake House happen way after the Hiss incursion (in fact, the very reason Marmonts get away with their experiments in the first place is because HQ is dark because of the Hiss), so it's unlikely that the painting in question has anything to do with them.

the events of the Lake House happen way after the Hiss incursion

From Control AWE: Langston alerts Jesse that a new AWE is currently taking place, but dated far in the future.

> If the alarm is true, then the reason for the alarm must be true. —Alan Wake

The Spiral.   The beginning must fit the ending.

Darling sought to stop a disaster, only to trigger the disaster.   A paranormal Quantum Break.

Before that happened, nothing indicates that they ever succeeded at a connection with the Dark Place

That’s not what I recall.  I took it that they opened the threshold, but weren’t seeing any results.  But, Mrs Marmont finds pages describing her and Mr Marmonts deteriorating relationship, which were presumably produced by Ed.

You know how they're not sure if the Oldest House shifts are following some unknown.…………. pattern?

There are a lot of things in Control 1 that now in hindsight look like they were patterned. It's obvious that Remedy has been planning this from a long time ago

u/fFIRE332A 2d ago

In the investigations sector, I think the abandoned offices, is an area that seems minorly patterned. There are a few objects in the hallway which repeat and float around, seemingly being patterned. Potentially hinting at control 2 along with the obvious AW2 teasers in AWE

u/kumogate 2d ago

This fuels my poorly-conceived hypothesis that the Hiss is a broken/corrupt Hedron resonance

6

u/Patient_Amoeba2476 1d ago

You’re not far off.  You’d need to go replay AW2: The Lake House to see it.  Hiss & Hedron: opposites, but the same; at war with each other.   Kind of like dual the research projects.

2

u/kumogate 1d ago

I don't think I've played that DLC, so that's definitely on my list of must-do's once I'm done my current re-play of Control

2

u/Old_Employee_6535 1d ago

It is. It is harmony vs. entropy.

6

u/Bork9128 2d ago

I mean kinda but unlikely due to the hiss everywhere

u/blackredblak 2d ago

The pattern was kind of a strange enemy for me in some ways because so many things in 1 seemed “patterned” already. It seemed like a standard thing that happened in/because of the oldest house. I think they did make the the pattern distinct enough in 2, but it does seem like perhaps they just went, “we had all this stuff duplicating itself, collapsing in on/flowing out of/through/around itself in the first game, what if we did more of that?” Like the old house seems to have a lot of patterning going on inside already prior to resonant that no one seems to think is anything but normal oldest house stuff, so I was kind of surprised that the pattern was presented as something separate and new.

So the way I think about it is this, this hiss and the hedron are both resonance entities so they have some similar aspects. I.e they can both influence reality in some ways, they just go about it slightly differently.

The hedron resonance is very ordered, it creates structured patterns out of reality while the hiss is chaotic and creates a mess. That's why hiss corrupted control points turned the oldest house into an almost inpassible jumble of walls and blocks.

They're often described as opposing forces, so I think the order/chaos interpretation fits really well.

Edit: on firther thought, there was also the fact that there was a hedron in the oldest house at the time, albeit dramatically weaker than the on in resonant. The more pattern like areas could be interpreted as subtle hints it was trying to fight back.

u/great00sage 1d ago

this is mereological patterning vs ontological patterning. they were familiar with the former from the old house already, which helped identify the anomaly of the latter & the danger it presents.

3

u/shadmere 2d ago

Oh man, that fight took me forever. I'd forgotten about that.

The Anchor Boss fight absolutely destroyed my PC and made it bluescreen because apparently the object count on the GOG version was uncapped.

2

u/Anodaxia_Games 1d ago

Your PC got Patterned/Hissed lol

u/Halfang 1d ago

Isn't this fight part of the FORMER's storyline?

1

u/KogarashiKaze 1d ago

No, the Former is only attached to the Fridge and the Pink Flamingo.
