Eejits parking.
This is next to Kent station on Grattan hill on the north side. All cars parked on the footpath and I had to walk on the road.

OP, you're obviously unfamiliar with this area. This has been the case there for decades. As others have said there are a lot of apartments and houses around that area with little to no parking and this is what you get. The cars really can't go anywhere else other than against that wall or otherwise they will block the road.

u/TRGMORGAN 2d ago
I agree completely it's a tight as fuck road, you may know me as I'm the guy a few months ago who has to drive up it in a van, accidentally hit one of the steps going into a house and blew the fuck out of my tyre, resulting in changing a tyre on the hill. It's an absolute bollocks of a place for any type of standard vehicle and I honestly can't blame people for parking on the footpath, it's one of the rare occasions where it has to happen. The hill was never designed to have that many people with vehicles on if

Oh jeepers. That was rough! You're not the first and you won't be the last.
3
u/AssetBurned 1d ago
Which would make it illegal to park there… https://bccsolicitors.ie/parking-on-footpaths/
-11
u/Ok_Body2869 2d ago
Then they cannot legally park there. What's hard to understand about this? It's illegal and antisocial behavior to park on footpaths.
8
u/Which-Cow6919 2d ago
Illegal yes absolutely, anti social is a stretch tbf
8
u/Ok_Body2869 2d ago
Absolutely it's antisocial as it forces footpath users onto the road and in some cases prevents their transit entirely. It's become widely normalised in Ireland but you'd be absolutely ridiculed (and fined) in most EU countries for pulling this shite.
7
u/Alternative-Jelly947 2d ago
Most EU countries? Maybe Germany and Switzerland but have you seen the parking in Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, etc.?

This is a failing of the government to provide proper parking and not a failure of the residents, walk up Grattan Hill and let me know after where you think they should park instead.
5
u/NumerousCut1652 1d ago
Houses on Grattan hill are probably 100+ years old. Thinking the government owe them parking is delusional
2
u/Ok_Body2869 2d ago
The better question is why you think the government owes anyone street parking.
1
u/gobocork 1d ago
Pretty antisocial if you're someone with a child in a buggy, or someone who uses a wheelchair.

1
u/NumerousCut1652 1d ago
I doubt it’s anti social, unless they don’t talk to each other while parking

What do you suggest. They put their cars on the roof?. Again, if you are familiar with the area, the road is very quiet other than residents so no-one is in any immediate danger.

u/Real_Penalty_4317 2d ago
Build parking areas?
2
u/Steridire 2d ago
Have you ever been on this part of the northside? There is nowhere to build parking areas here unless you knock multiple buildings that people are currently living in.
-1
u/Real_Penalty_4317 1d ago
Yes i have and if you shouldn’t park there find another way. I know it easy to say ah sure fuck it but here is an idea, try thinking.
What about up around the corner? Mahoneys avenue behind St Luke’s big green area full of trees. Enough room for residential parking.
Those people weren’t born with cars, they can walk. Irish people and their need for cars is astonishing
1
u/SmilePuzzleheaded498 1d ago
Try living there. YOu don't know what you are talking about. That pavement was put in years ago and never once used as a pavement. Even the council knows this and does not give tickets here.
0
u/Antique_Garbage_4361 1d ago
You're fucking everyone's day by walking there like some eejit instead of driving through
8
u/holynelly666 1d ago
If I was the king of Cork, and the greatest engineer in the world and money was no object, I would take over the large patch of unused ground beside it and build an underground carpark for residents, with a nice safe park on top that the school could use, that joins the top road to the lower road.

u/Desperate_Sport_4058 1d ago
Yeah must say after a visit to Cork the amount of traffic and off street parking has hugely increased. Frustrating for everyone. Not sure what the answer is. Should have widened the roads years ago if they could.
10
u/OuterSpiralHarm 1d ago
It's a cul-de-sac. There's little to no traffic other than the residents. Everyone who lives there knows the score, the road is a perfectly safe to walk as is, it's absolutely fine. Kids, parents, elderly folk, have walked up and down it like this for decades with no issues. Now, the house full of junkies down the bottom: that's anti-social.

Try complaining to the relevant authorities, Reddit isn’t going to fix it .
Take that picture along with a summary of the dangers it creates to the pedestrian and push forward with it .
You have a right to walk safely, no council should be arguing back with you
1
u/SmilePuzzleheaded498 1d ago
Nonsense. The council are aware of the issue and looking to get rid of the pavement.
20
u/Parking-Syrup5790 2d ago
This stems from bad facilities by the government. If there was more parking or better transportation services this wouldn't happen as often.
13
u/sufferinstuckontache 2d ago
Not if the footpath is closer to the end of this persons journey. Anyone this ignorant would still ignore facilities in favour of their own convenience
8
u/Parking-Syrup5790 2d ago
Not really ignorance. Do you think every car parked there for least convenience for themselves at the expense of others? Or that there's no other option available that suitable for the surrounding area.
2
u/sufferinstuckontache 2d ago
Park further away or maybe if you’re aware of the poor parking where you are going, public transport or taxi. Plenty of options. All better than potentially forcing an elderly or disabled person to have to come off the path and walk around the cars.
11
u/Parking-Syrup5790 2d ago
What spots further away? As previously mentioned the lack of facilities like parking areas are the issue here. Parking is scarce everywhere.
The solution of buses only works if they are reliable, which they are not. Taxis everywhere is not really affordable for most people in town. We are totally car dependent, because of necessity, not by choice.
The blocking of paths is wrong but it stems from a larger issue. It is the effect, not the cause.
2
u/Upstairs-Zebra633 2d ago
Both can be true, that doesn’t confer them special rights
2
u/Which-Cow6919 2d ago
We are car dependent, hence the problem .
Also if the cars parked off the path does this now block emergency services ?
Both can be true is correct , is there parking nearby to facilitate these motorists or is this a case of stuck between a rock and a hard place1
u/Upstairs-Zebra633 2d ago
Ok, guess they should be allowed to block paths, ambulances etc. we cannot have people living in the heart of the city without their god given right of convenient front door parking. You’ve convinced me

There's more around the corner on Lower Grattan Hill, the force cars coming down to drive on the wrong side around a blind bend.
2
3
u/AssetBurned 1d ago
Really wondering how long it will take to get someone to sue the city council for not doing anything about illegal parking.
On the continent people did that as it also impacts the ability for parents with strollers and disabled people to use foot paths.
3
1
u/helphunting 2d ago
You are right, it's a public road they should park on the road, and not the footpath.
I tried checking on Google but I don't know if a car parks there will the road be blocked?
Should they make it double yellow on both sides and the residents have to park somewhere else as well, or make it residents only parking?
1
1
u/Emotional_Math_8164 2d ago
Yeah, people in Ireland think they have a god given right to park outside their front door. Blame someone else for everything and just look after themselves. Have lived in cities where you might have to park a few blocks away if you got home late or one in particular where on street parking was banned overnight and it made for brilliant neighbourhoods. We get what we deserve. We don't want nice areas to live and prefer cars everywhere so the govt don't enforce parking rules. Fuck wheelchairs and buggies.
4
u/Accomplished_Fish_65 1d ago
In fairness people respond to the incentives and infrastructure that's available. Nobody chooses cars over nice neighbourhoods, they choose cars over unreliable public transport, unsafe walking and cycling conditions etc. As a result they get unpleasant neighbourhoods, but as individuals they didn't choose that.
1
u/Ok_Body2869 1d ago
Sadly that's just not the case. In densely populated parts of Dublin with decent public transport, footpaths and cycle routes many residents still preferentially drive <1 km to shops, schools, etc, even in decent weather, and when it takes longer to drive and find parking.
0
u/Accomplished_Fish_65 1d ago
Because car ownership is normalised because of the factors mentioned above.
2
u/Ok_Body2869 1d ago
It's not merely a question of car ownership, though. The Netherlands has a higher rate of car ownership than Ireland, but they use alternatives far more frequently. In Dublin alone something like 35% of all journeys under 2 km are made by car, despite the presence of viable alternatives.
1
u/Accomplished_Fish_65 22h ago
There is a cultural factor as well for sure, you're not wrong there. I think for a long time in Ireland people couldn't afford cars and associate public transport with poverty and once they could they just drove everywhere. I'm just saying nobody chooses shitty car-clogged neighbourhoods directly.

Where do you expect them to park?
If they park on the road the whole road gets blocked..
There's double yellow on one side and it should be on both.
11
u/sufferinstuckontache 2d ago
Maybe having the path and the double yellow is a good indicator that maybe, just MAYBE, this road is not the best place to park?
-1
u/FckXFckMusk 2d ago
Take it up with the council, they can spend money on this junk
https://www.corkbeo.ie/news/local-news/gardai-unveil-new-rainbow-pride-27229628

u/sufferinstuckontache 2d ago
The council pay for this? Also, that’s about €50 worth of decals. Stop being offended by colours you poor child
0
u/FckXFckMusk 2d ago
Thats not 50 euro thats just a waste of taxpayers money in order to virtue signal...
6
u/Visible-Agency-7226 2d ago
Well I expect them to park legally. I don't give a fuck where. That's for them to figure out
-4
u/FckXFckMusk 2d ago
if they park legally the road is blocked... then you complain your crip cart can't get down the road.
-1
-1
u/Antique-Mention-9063 2d ago
They'll never be able to paint them as there's always some cars in the way parked on that side.
2
u/Upstairs-Zebra633 2d ago
Agreed, the idea of moving a parked car is a level of scientific advancement we have not yet reached
-4
u/Upstairs-Zebra633 2d ago
“Where else would I park”
Rake of empty multi story car parks
12
u/Which-Cow6919 2d ago
Are they in the area , empty comment other wise
-3
u/Upstairs-Zebra633 2d ago
You don’t have a divine right to car parking, especially in the heart of the city

Doesn’t change what I said about empty comment , nobody said you have a “divine right “

Wrong on both counts, I just think cork people are generally completely unable to imagine a world without being completely dependent on a car
5
u/Independent_Gas_1557 2d ago
That’s because you can’t get around in Ireland without a car. If you dependent on public transport you are in trouble. We had better public transport 100 years in Cork than we do now. When you have children and they have activities, you’ll understand.
2
u/Upstairs-Zebra633 2d ago
I do, I just don’t agree with your point of view.
0
u/Independent_Gas_1557 14h ago
You are lucky you have it easy, you don’t need a car. Most people do or there wouldn’t be so many of them.
1
u/Upstairs-Zebra633 14h ago
You haven’t answered my question, probably because you can’t back it up with evidence. Because it’s false

Yes residents in this area should definitely park in the multi story car parks 20 minutes walk away and pay the €100 fine for overnight parking every day, sure we all have €700 a week to spend on parking fines!
Start living in the real world.
