New Music A Million Reasons - David Allan Coe

David Allan Coe's posthumous album release was yesterday, October 16th, and I'm surprised nobody in this subreddit has mentioned it. Intro track features Nature Boy Ric Flair lol. Album includes a new version of You Never Even Called Me By My Name, a Johnny Cash tribute song ( Corner of Cash and Coe ), Two tracks co-written by Kid Rock (Single Father and Only God Knows Why), and the title track has been on repeat for me since it dropped. Long live DAC <3

Really happy to learn record exists, details all suck except the Cash song might be ok. So sad that he had to collaborate with the moron who rhymed "things" with "things" over a karaoke mashup. If only it were someone talented like Sturgill Simpson.

He was a great songwriter and nobody can take that away. R.I.P. D.A.C.

I don’t give my time to anything or anyone who is a part of the other side of my moral beliefs (kid rock). I hope that the people who like Coe like it. I have never really liked His music but I understand I am in the minority.

DAC had become a bit of a caricature of himself long before the end. I saw him live thirty years ago, and the show was essentially a montage of his hits. Seriously. He literally mashed all of the songs together into a medley that blended one into the next without ever actually playing any of the entire songs all the way through. It kinda sucked. He played less than an hour.

I always got the sense that DAC wanted so desperately to be part of the outlaw country scene, but the rest of those guys (Willie, Waylon, Kris, etc...) just sorta tolerated him.

Anyway, that album doesn't sound very appealing to me. Might give it a listen out of curiosity.

Yeah that sounds like that would suck. When I think of DAC I think of a guy who gave himself his own nickname and then made that his personality.

Good description

Yea, saw him a bunch in the aughts; every show he showed up late, mashed together the hits and left immediately after. Absolutely no variation in that formula over 13 shows

I saw Hank Jr do the exact same thing. Not defending the quality of his live shows in the latter uears but the dude is absolutely a songwriting legend.

Anyone that glorifies this racist, I'll never understand. He uses the "N" word more than a modern rapper in the most hateful & evil ways. Y'all need to listen to his early stuff & see how great he is. The worst kind of human.

It’s like a couple songs. So overblown lol

Overblown? Thats definitely 1 way to put it

Yeah it’s not that deep. His drummer was Kerry brown for a long time. Most of the songs with racist words were made for shock value in a different time in the world. Some thicker skin would do you well.

No he does not lol. You are the one who should familiarize yourself w the early stuff

Im familiar w these songs and not defending Coe feeling free to use the N word in them. But the oft repeated claim that he was an unrepentent Klan racist is bullshit. Both things can be true.

If youre willing to talk honestly about it so am I. Coe was a backwards trashy dude in a lot of ways for sure. But for 40 years he was incredulous about the racist accusations and thats because, from his stubborn perspective, he was a serious songwriter and on the underground album especially he was writing satirical characters for raunchy comedy songs.

He didnt have a woman chained to his basement floor, he never throatfucked Linda Lovelace, and the cucked white dude in N***** Fucker was a character he claims was based on George Wallace.

It was chauvinist and racist and stupid to think it was OK to record that, but it wasnt him speaking his mind.

Klan racists dont coyly deny that they're racist when asked. They're loud and proud. Coe felt he was entitled as a serious songwriter to assume characters in his songs that were racist. And he was too macho and stubborn to accept the criticism afterwards.

That is worth criticism absolutely. But that isnt what you folks who bombard every thread about Coe are claiming. Yall flippantly declare that he was some white pride country singer and proclaim your disgust w him and anyone who has any admiration for him.

Regarding his early stuff--his first album was a blues album. He was inspired to pursue music by Screaming Jay Hawkins who was a friend of his in prison. He idolized Johnny Ace as a young man. There were black people in his band for decades. His early album Requiem for a Harlequin is a spoken word album that discusses his empathy with the civil rights movement and oppression of black people.

He wasnt fucking bell hooks but he had a lot if progressive aspects actually and he is one of the most interesting American musicians ever in my opinion. He will be reassessed i believe, when the time is right.

I was there when it was released. Bars & bowling alleys. N word is an N word. Racist is Racist.

You’re telling this to racists who mostly like music made for racist 8 year olds.
