DISCUSSION Could We Be Seeing A Potential 4K UHD Release of the Movie Anytime Soon?
A month ago, it was announced by the official accounts of this series that a 4K remaster of Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door will be re-released in theaters across Japan, starting on Friday, October 30th, 2026 — VERY fitting if you've watched the movie, lol. This is being done in celebration of its 25th anniversary, having originally released in theaters on September 1st, 2001 in Japan.
This news has me very curious and cautiously excited/optimistic. Firstly, are we likely to have a theatrical release of the 4K remaster of the movie here, in the U.S. of A. sometime in the near future? And secondly, is there a high likelihood of the movie releasing worldwide on 4K UHD sometime in the near future, as well? For both, but especially the second thing, I really hope so. This movie's LONG overdue for a brand new home release. The last time it had one was in 2018 on Blu-Ray and as far as my knowledge goes, those are out of print (correct me if I'm wrong, though). Now is the perfect opportunity for a brand new home release. Again, we can only hope things work out in our favor. What do you guys think?

I believe the answer to both questions is yes. The Movie typically gets a Fathom or Iconic Event theater replay at least every other year. It had an AXCN-sponsored theatrical screening in both 2024 and 2025, so I definitely see a similar event happening for the 4K release.
Regarding the home release, I expect Bandai Visual to announce it by the end of this year, if not early next year. After that, months may pass before Crunchyroll makes its own announcement, as they still hold the licensing rights in the U.S. It's too good an opportunity to pass up the 25th anniversary milestone event since it didn't premiere in U.S. theatres until August of 2002.

and if crunchy dgaf due to sony's current bias of physical media, i really hope a distributor that actually cares releases it as well, potentially gkids or discotek

I would be shocked if they invested money into this rescan without planning to make it back on a home video release. The Princess Mononoke UHD remaster took almost a year to make it to Blu-ray, but that eventually happened.

I just watched Ghost in the Shell last week at a theatre for it's 30-something year anniversary, so imma say yes it's definitely possible.

End of Evangelion re-release was announced right after I completed NGE and now this right as I finished Cowboy Bebop. I should buy a lotto ticket with this luck.

I know this is off topic, but good lord does that poster suck. I'll never get over how they used THAT to promote it.

I don’t want it. Honestly mostly because many studios haven’t given me much with the 4K UHD remasters with it even worsening the visuals for me especially in older films. While I know by now some things look a little dated, I can definitely see a lot of scenes where a remasters would mess with the colors, shadows, contrast, and definitely reducing the brightness and haziness

Huh? The most visually stunning and highly lauded 4K transfers have mostly been of older films, which benefit nicely from the deeper color and resolution bump. Of course anime 4K releases are a different story, but feature film remasters in general have been more hits than misses. Especially when they return to the original film negatives.

I was referring to older animated films in this case as it was the medium being mentioned. Should’ve clarified but even then, in older films I still don’t feel is always used well. Remasters are a very variable thing, and especially I feel that in older films due to how limitations we don’t have now made creative scenes, shooting, and contrast that modern day remasters and the people making them don’t always appreciate (damn typing this I feel snobbish 😂)

If you are concerned about old school animated movies on 4K just look at what Disney has done to some of their classics, for example the Cinderella 4K is a massive update over the very very bad HD version which had all the grain removed and thus a ton of details were lost too but the 4K fixes everything and it looks stunning.

Don’t worry as both film and 4K enthusiast you will never out-snob me. lol
You’re right that anime has gotten the short end of the stick in the UHD era. Fortunately most classic live action restorations are carried out with great care and accounting for the things you’re describing.
The Wizard of Oz on 4K for instance is one of the most beautiful things you will ever behold.

What I would really love is a re-release of the original show with re-rendered CGI elements, even if they re-use the current 1080p film scans. The Blu-rays look great until it conspicuously switches to a 480 interlaced shot mid-scene.

Those 480i standard definition CGI shots were all natively rendered at that resolution. There’s no improving those without redoing them from the ground-up, unfortunately.

Exactly. I don't think it will ever happen, but I think re-rendering or rebuilding the CG elements to create a cohesive visual experience for the core show would be far better use of time and money than this remaster of an already great-looking HD transfer.

Yeah, I get your perspective, that's fair. We can only hope that it doesn't end up being the case, right?

Yeah no ofc. I love this series, and if this project did occur I’d wish it all the success in the world

I hope so. Movie is way too pretty to be stuck in a regular format
