Culture/Drug Pressure?
Hey yall! I’m from TN and I‘m a junior looking into CU Boulder because I’m really into competitive rock climbing and I wanna major in math. Seems like the math department is really good. Same goes for the climbing team.
As for the culture, I don’t know much about it at all. Seems pretty outdoorsy, which I like. However, my mom is worried that peer pressure for doing drugs and stuff would be bad (bc it is Boulder, CO after all). Is that actually a big thing on campus or just the town itself? (I’ve been to Boulder a few years ago so yes, I understand how the town itself is.) Also, is Greek life super prominent? Does Greek life dominate the campus culture? I really do not want to get involved in a sorority whatsoever. If I am not in Greek life, will I feel like I’m missing out? Would just joining some clubs I enjoy suffice?
So yeah, if you guys could just inform me as to what the culture is like that would be great! thanks!

If you aren’t interested in Greek life it has zero effect on day to day campus life. For campus life they’re mostly if you want to underage drink or find a group of friends/connections that you pay for. You’ll find plenty of your own friends just going through the normal campus experience.
For drugs if you say no it means no. Nobody is forcing or judging you if you do or don’t partake. It’s a big campus so you’ll make friends no matter what lifestyle you choose to live. Plenty of people around that like to just chill and have a soda and play video games or go for a hike or whatever.
Joining a club like alpine club if you’re interested in climbing will give you some of that group community that helps in such a big campus.

CU alum here who moved to Tennessee for the nature: You'll be fine. It's no more a druggy culture than anywhere else in the country. If it's not your thing, you politely say no. If your friends don't respect that, they're not your friends.
Greek life is completely irrelevant to campus life when you go to schools that aren't in the southeast. (:

If you want to smoke weed and take edibles, great. If you don’t, no one cares. It’s been legal here for a long time.
Greek life is minuscule here compared to the south. Plenty of other things to get involved in and if you’re not into it you’ll forget it exists.
