Discussion Enough Is Enough

I love this subreddit, this niche corner of the incredible hobby we are all obsessed with, so much. I rarely if ever post here anymore, but I still check the sub every day. It’s important to me. I love recognizing the flair of certain users, I love the trends and memes…even the Dreadmaw ones.

But as soon as I see AI art on your card, my eyes glaze over. I will scroll past. I will not read the text on your card, or if I do, I will not take it seriously. Magic the Gathering is one of the most in depth, intricate, creative games of all time. Deckbuilding and card design offers endless opportunities for expression.

“But I am not an artist! It’s not hurting anyone! Is it any different from just taking an artist’s work without their permission?” First of all, I assure you that 99% of artists don’t give a flying fuck if you use their art for a make believe Magic card on a small subreddit that costs them nothing. They might even be thrilled their art is being reused. Make even seen for the first time. As long as they’re being credited.

Second of all…Draw a stick figure. Write down the description of what you think it should look like. Use the prompt you WERE going to put into a soulless machine to write a poem for your card. Take a picture with your phone of your pet, a sunset, a tree on your street you like. Ask your artist friend to do a sketch. See if your mom or your dad or your sister will make a funny face for you. Upload an old meme. I genuinely don’t care.

But every time you use AI for your card’s “art”, you are granting power to a mindless, useless, regurgitating mass of drivel, theft, and consumption. You are surrendering an aspect of your own creativity, or denying us the opportunity to see a real human made piece of art on something you care about. You gave up the opportunity for collaboration and soul and care.

I don’t know, maybe I’m being dramatic. And I know the mods have been firm about not banning it, despite it being such a contentious subject. But not only do I believe it adds nothing to our community, I believe AI “art” rips out a little bit of its heart and soul every time it is used.

If stick figure art is good enough for Gavin Verhey, it's good enough for me

69

u/PhDVa Jun 29 '26

If you feel this way, I highly recommend you join us at No Goblins Allowed, where we design purely in text like it's the mid-2000s.

14

u/SharpDrink2724 Jun 29 '26

But I love Gobbies :(

9

u/revolverzanbolt Jun 29 '26

I’d rather text based design honestly; finding art and generating cards using apps is tiresome.

i am! i like it

9

u/endless-star rule zero is the only rule Jun 29 '26

Glad you like it! I spent over 500 hours on the easel on it

16

u/PlushieYeen Jun 29 '26

I know you’re being facetious, but even if you weren’t, I would not care. If you spent 500 hours working on that piece, then that means you spent 500 hours creating, experimenting, and learning. Only good things will come from that.

63

u/schylerwalker Jun 29 '26

This is infinitely better. This made me smile.

-55

u/revolverzanbolt Jun 29 '26

You are in the minority. I’ve made cards with stick figure art; they get largely ignored. AI gets a much better evaluation.

20

u/PlushieYeen Jun 29 '26

Keep drawing the stick figure art and challenging yourself to improve. Eventually it’ll get better and you’ll be shocked what you can create.

Or let some soulless mega-company do it for you, I guess. Very sad.

-9

u/revolverzanbolt Jun 29 '26

I don’t want to be an artist. I enjoy designing cards, not drawing.

17

u/PlushieYeen Jun 29 '26

Then either find someone to draw it or leave it blank. You don’t need art on your cards if all you enjoy is designing cards. You are not entitled to art.

This genuinely has soul

When guy with a sword enters attach target equipment you control to him. If you don't control an equipment create a sword token with indestructible and hexproof and attached creature gets +2+0 and attach it to Guy with a sword.

At the beggining of your upkeep if guy with a sword does not have an equipment attached to him create a sword token and attach it to him.

"A guy must always have a sword"

What does he do?

20

u/endless-star rule zero is the only rule Jun 29 '26

He is a Legendary Warrior from the plane of Innistrad, on a Holy Quest from as-of-yet unknown king, to find a mythical object that I haven't decided on yet.

5

u/ThePowerOfStories Jun 29 '26

In order to cleanse his homeland, he’s probably looking for anything a werewolf hates, such as a collar—especially Avacyn’s Collar, the symbol of her church.

9

u/GoodKarmaDarling Jun 29 '26

This is still literally 1000000% better than AI

1

u/ThatFeelyFeel Jun 29 '26

Infinitely more soulful than any AIgen image. There is human intent behind it, even if it is crude.

98

u/SharpDrink2724 Jun 29 '26

Agreed. There are so many options available to you if you can't/don't want to draw the art yourself.

Using AI is a surefire way to have a lot of people not even look at your post after they see the "art"

1

u/revolverzanbolt Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Not in my experience. I’ve done the kind of “art” this post suggests: stick figures, abstract placeholders, text descriptions. They’re largely ignored in comparison to AI art.

Honestly, trying to find art is the most tiresome part of making cards, I’d support just banning all art entirely; would save me so much effort if I could just skip the process of finding some tangentially related fantasy art on google images.

19

u/SharpDrink2724 Jun 29 '26

How do you know it's not because the card design was boring/uninteresting?

-11

u/revolverzanbolt Jun 29 '26

I’ve posted versions of the same card with no art versus AI art, and the AI art does better. People care about aesthetics on this subreddit.

-15

u/StoneCypher Jun 29 '26

it’s time to stop.

40

u/SothaSillies Jun 29 '26

Yeah, it always takes away from the card. Use real art, it's easy and can actually look really damn good.

21

u/tenBusch Jun 29 '26

If the creator doesn't care enough to use literally anything else but AI, then I'm gonna to assume they also don't care enough to make a card worth reading and will scroll past

16

u/M4LK0V1CH Jun 29 '26

Don’t just scroll past, leave a downvote for their laziness!

41

u/Pimp_cat69 Jun 29 '26

DeviantArt and Pinterest exist for a reason! Back when I first dipped my toes in custom cards, I spent a lot of time on those sites! It's infinitely more satisfying to find art yourself than get it generated by a computer.

I've gotten very tired with the influx of slop art on cards on here.

16

u/acidtrip321 Jun 29 '26

Last time I was looking for sth at deviant art it was full of terrible ai images

6

u/Pimp_cat69 Jun 29 '26

Damn, that's annoying. Maybe I'm just lucky, since I never got any, although I've moved away from DA years ago.

9

u/revolverzanbolt Jun 29 '26

As someone who searches for art a lot and did so before AI was common, “satisfying” is not the word I’d use. Trying to find appropriate art is so tiresome and completely unrelated to the parts of custom card design I actually like; I’d skip finding art entirely if doing so didn’t crater any engagement your posts make.

7

u/Call_like_it_is_ Jun 29 '26

DeviantArt is full of AI-generated imagery these days, just FYI. They are very much pro-AI.

Why DeviantArt is an AI company now? by artificallybeautiful on DeviantArt

2 years ago people were yelling "Deviantart is killing itself, it will be dead in MONTHS because they allow 'AI slop' on there instead of REAL art". They are still going strong.

4

u/magicmax112 Jun 29 '26

Going strong? Who even uses that site

5

u/Call_like_it_is_ Jun 29 '26

"Who even uses that site"

According to statistics released, they have over 110 million registered accounts, with 260,000+ purchases in the 2025FY, totalling over $23 million. So yeah... a decent few people still use it.

Source: 2026: 110M users and a new era for DeviantArt by Team on DeviantArt

6

u/magicmax112 Jun 29 '26

Paying money for ai is crazy, but i guess those people are among the dumbest in society

-6

u/Call_like_it_is_ Jun 29 '26

You DO realise that some actual artists do still support dA, right? As in not all traditional artists are anti-AI...

Here's an example of someone that I follow that is 100% traditional, watercolor painting. claratessier on DeviantArt

7

u/magicmax112 Jun 29 '26

How do you know people like this artist arent anti ai? Maybe they just already had an existing customer base on this site before they became pro ai, and it would cost them too much business to leave the site.

-2

u/Call_like_it_is_ Jun 29 '26

...because they would have pulled down their art off dA since it is a known fact that dA scrapes the art submitted and uses it for training data (and it is mentioned in their terms of use?)

What anti in their right mind would keep their art on a platform that they KNOW scrapes their work?

6

u/magicmax112 Jun 29 '26

I would read my comment again because thats not at all a reason to what i was asking

2

u/fluffynuckels Jun 29 '26

I mean we have probably close to 20k pieces of art you can pick from just from mtg cards. There's plenty of options that don't involve ai

30

u/Theran_Baggins Jun 29 '26

"I don't know, maybe I'm being dramatic" - OP, gonna be honest, you could be mader. 100% a valid take on your part.

25

u/schylerwalker Jun 29 '26

How jaded and cynical people are being over this is honestly not only surprising, it’s depressing. I thought art and the creative process was the thing we were supposed to be passionate about?

5

u/Theran_Baggins Jun 29 '26

1000%! I can kinda understand getting met with opposing takes when it comes to topics with some level of subjectivity... But stuff causing objective, quantifiable, and significant problems? Wildly saddening. Especially when accessible alternatives are usually offered in addition to the explanations of what the problem is.

Like, end of the day, yeah - nearly impossible to get everyone to agree on a topic - but sometimes it just feels like you're trying to explain something as simple as "you need food to live" to someone who refuses to even consider they may be wrong by thinking they can live off of nothing but energy drinks.

Heck, even subjective things like this. "Why shouldn't I use genAI for my custom cards?" Besides all the environmental/economic/societal issues? Because creative expression and the act of creation is a good thing. "Oh, but I don't wanna do that." ... Then why are you making a custom MTG if not to be creative?

22

u/WealthyMarmot Jun 29 '26

Maybe I’m just old and grumpy, maybe I’ve got too many actual problems to spend mental energy on this kind of thing, but…who gives a shit? We’re making fake TCG cards here for fun. It’s not like anyone was going to commission artwork for these things. They’re throwaway Reddit posts, not sacred “opportunities for collaboration and soul and care.” No one’s being “denied” anything when someone uses a LLM instead of “uploading an old meme” or asking their friends to create original art for a Reddit post that’ll probably get twelve upvotes then fade away into the sands of time.

This has gotten almost religious at this point. I’m not sure how healthy it is to devote this level of dramatic energy to something so inconsequential.

1

u/PlushieYeen Jun 29 '26

You think humanity’s ability to create art is inconsequential?

7

u/M4LK0V1CH Jun 29 '26

Or the health of people and ecosystems?

-10

u/Raevelry Jun 29 '26

Misplaced value system, i know your ass isn't championing anything for the world but suddenly AI turns you into captain planet?

3

u/Dragonfruit-Sparking Jun 29 '26

At that point, why bother stopping at the card art itself? Why not tell Chat GPT to just make a cool card to get that sweet sweet karma? People on the subreddit might not have high standards, but I at least want people to have some love for what they do

7

u/DireOmicron Jun 29 '26

People can love making the card but hate making the art? The mechanics of the card is the entire point. The art work is just a way to get people to interact with the post.

I similarly wouldn’t have an issue if someone loved making art for a character than used an ai to make up a random backstory for a Reddit post on r/characterart since the art is the entire point

-13

u/Raevelry Jun 29 '26

"Man I have a cool idea but no artistic skills. Well, I guess i should just have an AI do EVERYTHING for me despite lacking one fundamental presentation skill"

this is how you sound. Stupid right?

-10

u/schylerwalker Jun 29 '26

Then if you’re old and grumpy and you don’t give a shit, fuck off.

16

u/Yuzu-Adagio Jun 29 '26

I've seen some that just have blank art, I'm cool with that even. I'm here for the text, anyway, and I assume most of us are.

3

u/revolverzanbolt Jun 29 '26

As someone who posts artless cards when I cbf’d looking for art, I wouldn’t agree; most people scroll and upvote pretty casually, and bad looking cards will largely be scrolled past.

11

u/Ignoxian Jun 29 '26

I also hate AI painting very much. The problem is, I'm not sure if banning it will have a positive impact on this community.

Some users on this subreddit are serious. When they make and upload cards, expect how strong they will be in each format, and consider linking them to other cards.

Some users, on the other hand, are not serious. They just upload ideas that come up in their sleep, in their shower.

One thing to note here is that serious users were also not serious at one time.

The people who make the cool cards are the ones who made and uploaded them at first without much thought. Banning AI creates barriers to entry.

If AI art were to be completely banned, non-serious users would be offended that their cards would be deleted. If the influx of new users were to be reduced, the outlook for this subreddit would be bad in the long run. Maybe a warning would be fine.

Sentences can be awkward or aggressive because I used a translator. I hope my intentions have been conveyed.

12

u/Theran_Baggins Jun 29 '26

Speaking as someone who at one point did use genAI - learned about it's issues - and has course corrected: suggestions for alternatives within the rule description would negate this issue.

If the user's concern is laziness - simply grabbing pre existing art, making a ms paint doodle, or just having text are all just as easy (if not easier) tasks to preform than dealing with genAI prompting.

If the concern is "quality" - google images, Pinterest, art station, etc - if they weren't already bothered by genAI companies stealing art to profit off the training data, then "oh, but isn't copy/pasting from an image search for a card you'll receive 0 profit from just as bad" isn't remotely a valid argument. At least now they aren't contributing to the other issues genAI are rapidly making worse.

21

u/revolverzanbolt Jun 29 '26

If you want people to use stick figures, you’ll need to convince people to actually upvote well designed cards with crappy art, because as is this community doesn’t.

5

u/TerryTags Jun 29 '26

Correct. This community doesn’t upvote well designed cards with crappy art.

2

u/Theran_Baggins Jun 29 '26

Stick figures wasn't the only suggestion - browsing the top posts; screenshots, manga panels, memes, existing card art, and plenty of other images that if I had to guess was found on google, pinterest, art station or some similar site.

If a user is just "unseriously slap together an idea they had in the shower" - they're not gonna care if they make some seriously high number of upvotes - and odds are if they are as unserious as you say, then they probably won't care enough to make the actual card well designed.

2

u/revolverzanbolt Jun 29 '26

I care about my card art designs. I don’t care about searching google images for some tangentially related art. Finding vaguely relevant art is by far the most time consuming part of making a custom card, and in my opinion, it’s very disproportionately effecting the results of engagement.

I don’t even generate art, I just don’t refuse to use AI art I think is relevant if it turns up in a search. And what I’ve found is that things like screenshots, manga panels, stick figures, abstract drawings or no art strongly negatively affects the amount of feedback you receive on cards. As someone who would love to spend less time on finding art, I don’t feel like I have the option.

6

u/forwhatever4746 Jun 29 '26

It’s not a barrier to entry to say that you should use no art rather than AI art. It’s not any harder to submit no art than it is to prompt an image generator and copy and paste. As the poster said, you can just put the prompt you were going to use as the art and then everyone’s brain gets to use their own creativity without simply stealing from past human passion to create a slop conglomeration of what a prediction algorithm thinks you should think. All subreddits have rules, if someone wants to post without looking at the rules then they are likely to have their post removed in every subreddit, I don’t see any reason why “no ai” would be a rule that’s so restrictive over any other “no —“ rule that would get a post removed.

17

u/revolverzanbolt Jun 29 '26

It’s a barrier to entry when no art cards receive no engagement and AI art cards do.

-3

u/M4LK0V1CH Jun 29 '26

Using any non-ai art is such a low barrier to entry that it might as well not be one.

20

u/Decksterity1 Jun 29 '26

I am a certified clanker hater

But

I have never understood why anyone cares about ai art for custom cards that will NEVER see printing. It's just a placeholder to illustrate visually the concept the card creator had in mind, if everyone used stick figure level drawings it would be far less interesting visually and some ideas need a little visual help to get the idea across. Noone is profiting, why do you get so worked up?

AI custom art proxies however are vile abominations that should be eaten on site.

15

u/forwhatever4746 Jun 29 '26

What we’re talking about is art, it’s subjective by definition. Art isn’t just about visually what you’re looking at, it’s about the process and intention that went into creating it and that’s always been a part of art for thousands of years before AI. The reasons for disliking AI art have been said a million times in a million different places on the internet. The art in a custom card is trying to assist in portraying the message of the card. People, including me personally, will automatically dislike whatever that message is if you’re using AI art. It is necessarily stealing from the effort, creativity, and learning that millions of humans experienced in the past to create something soulless and devoid of real human passion or meaning. Regardless of if someone profits from it, its existence is built upon stealing from real human creations and it’s absolutely not necessary to get a point across about a card. I promise that people were making “shitty” drawings for custom cards for years and other people were loving it. The joy of a custom card is not in it looking realistic, it’s in sharing in the experience the creator is trying to create. I can’t understate how much joy I get from seeing a cool concept with the product of real human effort and passion, no matter how technically skilled the accompanying artwork is.

14

u/Theran_Baggins Jun 29 '26

Everything u/mralec_ said and also the environmental cost of each prompt.

Two common retorts I've seen...

"I'm not hurting anyone," which is just not an accurate statement. There is quantifiable and significant harm being done.

"I'm just one person making one prompt." A) do you think you're the only who thinks that? & B) any amount of use of genAI encourages tech companies to just push it harder.

And if all that is still not enough - I genuinely can't think of the last time I saw anything churned out of genAI and slapped on a custom magic card that couldn't have easily just been an existing piece of art. (Not to mention, using genAI for the art now inherently causes doubt about if any part of the card was made without genAI)

15

u/FailsWithTails Jun 29 '26

I don't use AI art on any of my custom cards, but I don't understand why everyone is quick to jump on the environmental cost aspect.

Prompts themselves are environmentally dirt cheap, comparatively. It's the mass construction of data centers, insane quantity of data aggregation, and obscenely extensive training on that data that are expensive, and whether a few random Internet users ask a few prompts or not, it's a drop in the bucket compared to the massive corporations all flocking to invest in and use generative AI as the savior to all their problems. The environmental cost is largely in the creation of the infrastructure, not the asking of the prompt, and that's why different studies will cite vastly different "costs-per-prompt". Some try to only factor the cost of responding to the prompt, others try to project an estimate of how many times (past, present, and future) a particular language model will be prompted, and divide the cost of training it across that projection.

3

u/mralec_ Jun 29 '26

Still, using the tool incentivises the corporations to continue investing and developement of GenAI. Using it undirectly contributes to the damages.

10

u/SkyBlade79 Jun 29 '26

You see how that's completely moving the goalposts from environmental impact right

-1

u/FailsWithTails Jun 29 '26

I can't say how much of it is just me being bitter, but given that so many job listings in my field seem to be pushing for replacing old school problem solvers with AI vibe coders (and I can't for the life of me get an AI-less job with 7 years experience), corporations are already plenty incentivized to invest in generative AI.

4

u/Theran_Baggins Jun 29 '26

On the corporate side: sunk cost and/or self interest.

But the more people using genAI, for anything, are more people for AI companies to point to a say "see? see? there's totally profit to be made here!" and justify further pushing.

It feeds the problems.

1

u/mralec_ Jun 29 '26

It's not about the profit/printing, it's about using a stealing, polluting and 'reason computer parts are so fucking expensive' technology to satisfy your own laziness. There is sooooooo much art out there, it's not hard to find one that fits your card and you can easily credit it.

-4

u/JaysonTatecum Jun 29 '26

It’s not even just a moral thing. It’s ugly, it’s always ugly, the fact you can instantly tell it’s the same boring glossy AI style is just a pain to look at

1

u/M4LK0V1CH Jun 29 '26

The AI companies are making money off you every time you use their program. Nothing is truly free. They’re either serving ads, selling your data, or, more likely, both. Not to mention the stolen labor, government forcing through ai development at the national and local levels, environmental concerns, public health concerns, and the fact that image search exists.

-5

u/SharpDrink2724 Jun 29 '26

Do you think we don't know that they won't be printed...?

AI art is ugly, terrible for the environment, and is built on stolen training data. So it doesn't matter that the card won't be printed, we dislike it because of what it represents. ESPECIALLY when there are super easy alternatives out there, like using existing art, making a crude drawing, or just having the art be blank. All are better than AI.

-2

u/GoodKarmaDarling Jun 29 '26

Agreed. Enough is enough. There needs to be a permanent ban on all AI slop on this subreddit.

7

u/vaksninus Jun 29 '26

I agree with the mod. You are welcome to start a competing custommagic2 or something.

-7

-19

u/alextfish : Template target card Jun 29 '26

Some people prefer to see their cards with a realistic-looking illustration. Chill out.

If you properly avoid giving any custom to big corporations - no shopping with Amazon, no letting Google track you via ads across apps, no Facebook or Insta, no letting YouTube or Netflix algorithms suggest your next watch to you - then congrats, you're a rare individual. If you don't go to those lengths, then I don't see how generating a couple of images is "giving power" to a megacorp when what they really want is your data and eyeballs.

23

u/schylerwalker Jun 29 '26

This post is not about them, and you’re using “Whataboutism” arguments and deflection. This post is about AI art on our little subreddit and how it is ruinous and grotesque to the creative process. I will not chill out. It is so much easier to just not use it.

-18

u/Simiscape_ Jun 29 '26

No you really do need to chill out. Its not that deep. If you don't like the use of AI art, just keep scrolling. I get it, I'm not a huge fan of AI art either, but "ruinous and grotesque" is how you describe a natural disaster, not a fictional card.

18

u/schylerwalker Jun 29 '26

It is that deep! I refuse to chill! I will not just keep scrolling. If you’re going to be so jaded and cynical about it, how about YOU keep scrolling?? Art is literally what we’re supposed to be passionate about. And AI IS a natural disaster, or rather an unnatural one, of our own design.

-14

u/Simiscape_ Jun 29 '26

Bro going to pop a blood vessel over computer art. You really think its that deep? You must live a very privileged life where in your biggest concern is AI art work. And maybe chill out on the whole "AI IS a natural disaster", people die in natural disasters and suffer greatly. I'm just saying you need some perspective of your choice of words. Is AI a threat to the artist community? Maybe. Is this subreddit where the battle against AI art will be fought? Absolutely not.

12

u/schylerwalker Jun 29 '26

The battle against AI art will be fought on many battlefields, and I am happy to make this one of them.

-13

u/Simiscape_ Jun 29 '26

Sure thing bud. See you on the battlefield

8

u/Theran_Baggins Jun 29 '26

1) what OP said - you are changing the topic.

2) not only is genAI causing notable problems for the environment, economy, and society - it's single handedly making all those companies you listed worse.

3) if they wanted a "realistic" (generous for genAI) art for custom cards, no one needs genAI for that.

3

u/forwhatever4746 Jun 29 '26

And some people prefer to see actual human effort and passion that isn’t stealing from past human creations to make soulless and meaningless crap. If the only way you can enjoy a creative novel concept in the space of a card game is “realistic” art then you 100% don’t actually enjoy the game and the experience the author is trying to share.

-23

u/AwfulUnicorn Jun 29 '26

I think custom cards with AI artwork can look great and I’ll receive a card with a good artwork (human or AI made) more positively

are you doing this as a form of actually listening to the community and thinking people prefer ai art staying, or just to make a point?

Thank you. Would be great if I didn't have to see these harassment posts every week too.

Can you link to last week and the week before's post like this? Or the week before that?

-27

u/TalosSquancher Jun 29 '26

Right.

Its the same as when the digital drawing pads came out and physical artists lost their shit because now anyone can do art easier and its 'flat' and 'soulless'.

Literally deja vu. "Noooo dont give money to this company, theyre the bane of art and free expression! They're evil and kick puppies!"

A funny card that nobody is ever going to monetize is the perfect use for AI art.

Days without anti-AI griping: 0

Moderators have already said numerous times they are not going to implement a no-AI policy.

That being said, if you're THAT against AI, might want to delete your reddit account. It is common knowledge that posts are scraped for AI training data (including imagery posted within subreddits).

EDIT: Downvoters, you're just proving my point. Instead of deleting your reddit account in solidarity of your own beliefs, you'd rather just downvote me into oblivion. Kind of hilarious, really. Shows how paper-thin your veneer of self-justification is.

Wow, -12? Guess I caught the attention of brigaders.

Genuinely the same energy as "if you are THAT concerned about mass shootings in your country, have you considered moving to another country?" as if that would help the issue at all - especially when there are alternative actions that could help.

Anywhere you go, there's gonna be scrapping for training data - just ignoring it and going somewhere with less of it isn't gonna stop it from happening to you or the site you left. That's why people take action in other ways like explaining why genAI is problematic, offering suggestions for alternatives, and/or looking into options like political movements seeking to regulate it.

I just find it funny that people are griping about AI in a random custom magic card forum when every one of the images they post elsewhere are systematically scraped by reddit and sold off to said AI companies. You'd think that if they were THAT vehemently against it, they would delete their reddit account on principle. I guess it's only when it fits THEIR narrative that it holds up.

Again, same energy as "if you're so upset about the mass shootings, why don't you just leave?"

What would that solve?!?!?!

The problem doesn't just go away the second you act like it doesn't exist - especially when the problem will just follow you elsewhere.

(Thread got locked mid typing a response to the below comment - adding the response as an edit and just moving one)

You may a point, I used an analogy to address the issue with the point. You use the same point again, so I used the same analogy again.

"Burying their heads" and did you forget what post you're on? Large change (reddit allowing ai scrapping) takes time. Small change (1 subreddit banning ai images) takes waaaaay less time. Not to mention, you can put effort into trying to make change in both issues at the same time.

Let's say - hypothetically - we follow your argument to the logical conclusion: living off the grid in the middle of nowhere... Once more, what did that solve?

At best? One person might be a bit happier (assuming they are the sort who like off-grid life)... But if you're someone who sees a problem, and it bothers you so much you leave society because of it, odds are you're still gonna be saddened by the fact doing so made 0 positive movement towards fixing the problem... And that's not even addressing the whole point 1 con does not suddenly erase all pros of something.

EDIT: LMAO at your blinder-level focus on comparing AI support to mass shootings. You're reaching so hard you could qualify for the American Olympics Gymnastics team.

So why are anti-AI supporters on reddit burying their head in the sand and pretending like reddit isn't blatantly supporting the very thing that they supposedly hate with all their soul?

"AI IS THE DEVIL... EXCEPT WHEN IT GETS IN THE WAY OF MY DOOM SCROLLING AND CUTE KITTEN VIDEOS AND TEARING DOWN AI SUPPORTERS!"

If I say I don’t want a river running through my house because it gets everything wet, that isn’t the same thing as saying I’m against the concept of a river. AI art is detrimental to the creative process and NEEDS to steal from real human passion to create anything. AI advancements in cancer detection saves human lives. You aren’t engaging in the arguments being presented at all and are blindly proclaiming that people who don’t like what you’re saying are against AI proponents. You’re complaining about the people complaining about AI, so you’re allowed to “gripe” but they aren’t? The mods said they aren’t going to do “no AI” so people shouldn’t say they disagree? AI collects data from every website, so you shouldn’t go on the internet if you dislike AI art? None of your points make any sense.

3

u/Call_like_it_is_ Jun 29 '26

Where was I griping, hmmm? Not a single line of my post was a 'gripe' in any way, shape or form. I simply called out anti's on their hypocrisy when it is a known fact that reddit scrapes posts AND images to sell for AI training. They claim to want to 'burn down AI data centres' but can't bring themselves to cut themself off from big-daddy-reddit.

-10

u/sephirothbahamut Jun 29 '26

Can you use the search function to see the last dozen times the same post had already been made?

-15

u/acidtrip321 Jun 29 '26

Sometimes using AI is a part of creative expression e. g. when making a silly meme card that you purposefully want to look bad, obnoxious, ugly... Therefore what you are proposing aims at limiting this creative expression because you really dont like something.

It's funny, the person who frequently posts cards from the cube they're making, which all have AI art, gets positive comments and no hate. I went through their last twenty posts and the only comments about the art were positive ("where is this from, I need it!", "MtG needs more art like this", etc).

I'm not a fan of the insipid default style which the most popular tools spit out, and dislike cards which use that, but that's just a dislike of ugly images rather than about the source. If someone produces a card I like the look of then I don't mind which tools they use to make it.

7

u/forwhatever4746 Jun 29 '26

You should care. The end product is only a portion of what art is. If I steal and copy artwork and present it as my own it should not be celebrated even if it’s technically impressive. Every single piece of AI art is stolen from the passions of millions of humans.

-9

u/StoneCypher Jun 29 '26

so much complaining

we don’t really care if your eyes glaze over.  someday you’re just going to have to get over it.

the world just isn’t going to change for you this way

downvote me as hard as you want to.  every month people care less.

-23

u/Kadian13 Jun 29 '26

And if you’re not using AI, please don’t use art of existing cards (nor symbols of existing sets). It’s just confusing when you’re also expecting real cards and posts in your feed (like most of us do).

11

u/Mind0versplatter0 Jun 29 '26

You can look at the sub (or if you know the art, you'll know right away it has a different effect). Doesn't it take less than a second of disorientation before you realize what you're looking at?

-3

u/Kadian13 Jun 29 '26

Yes, but why do it in the first place? Genuinely I don’t understand
