The humble kindred enchantment planeswalker battle getting turned into an artifact creature:

u/Ok_Commission7932 20d ago

I was skeptical that there were 6 permanent types so thank you

7

u/Farconion 20d ago

kindred isn't an explicit permanent type

44

u/DumatRising 20d ago

But it is a type and a permanent can have it. All the card says is 6 or more types among permanents you control.

To be a type does not explicitly make it a permanent type, a supertype such as snow, legendary, or in this case Kindred, are not explicit types. The only permanent card types are Land, Creature, Planeswalker, Artifact, Enchantment, and Battle

That great! I'm glad you know the rules! Now read the card and what I said again.

It asks for card types, not permanent card types.

Damn

u/DumatRising 20d ago

Also btw I did miss this in your initial comment, snow and legendary are super types, but kindred is not. You can check the rullings on Tarmogoyf, the newer atraxa, or delirium cards. If kindred was a super type then it wouldn't count for this.

Thank you for letting me know! Now to leave my embarrassment on here so others who dont know can learn

If it makes you feel better I failed the first time I took the rules advisor test (back when we had those) because I thought legendary was a type and didn't understand what super types were XD

It can be a little confusing that one of the words what goes before another word isn't the same as the other three words that go before another word.

The thing is though kindred is not a supertype. It is a card type. It buffs tarmagoyf and can be revealed by atraxa. Unlike snow and legendary

3

u/Complete_Arm_9714 20d ago

Oh good to know! I always assumed because its in the same location as the other supertypes

1

u/PhilosopherBoth8446 20d ago

Happens its a weird one but ruleswise it makes a noncreature card have a creature type why it will never be on a creature.

1

u/Guest_1300 20d ago

You'd be right if Kindred was a supertype (legendary obviously isn't a card type), but yeah as others stated Kindred is actually a card type and not a supertype. It just feels like a supertype because it only ever goes on cards with one or more other types.

u/goldenvesper 17d ago

I wonder how a card that had only the kindred type and no others would work...

2

u/Farconion 17d ago

https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Kindred

interesting read. tl;dr only exists to allow creature subtypes to be allowed to non-creature subtypes

also

308.1. Each kindred card has another card type. Casting and resolving a kindred card follows the rules for casting and resolving a card of the other card type.

2

u/goldenvesper 17d ago

Indeed. If not supertype, then why supertype-shaped?

it's a type not a supertype, it counts for delirium as one

3

u/Throwaway79922 16d ago

[[saheeli, radiant creator]] wins again, being able to animate battles into artifact creatures

2

u/StructureMage 14d ago

What card type is humble

-2

u/UndeniableRealities 15d ago

kindred is a supertype, not a card type

72

u/Schermungern 20d ago

Behold my totally functional 11 mana instant win combo

46

u/Legitimate-City-104 20d ago

"figure it out" is infinitely better than "it works" btw, thank you for this

9

u/Cocholate_ 20d ago

Doesn't the first one die instantly as it's a creature with 0 toughness?

8

u/Maleficent-Sun-9948 20d ago

No, it dies because it's a planeswalker with 0 loyalty.

5

u/DarkThick2129 20d ago

[[Sanctum lurker]] will fix that, nothing stops the battle with 0 defence though.

3

u/Maleficent-Sun-9948 20d ago

Maybe but that 2 card combo looks less and less like a two card combo

2

u/DarkThick2129 20d ago

Most do when you look at the whole package and not just the 2 combo cards.

1

u/merfolk_surprise 16d ago

well it goes to the graveyard as part of its resolution, bc it's an instant/sorcerery

-2

u/Solcaranth 20d ago

As long as you have a lord out, which all of your cards now are, it gets +1/+1

1

u/sephirothbahamut 20d ago edited 19d ago

it's still a planeswalker without loyalty and a battle without defense or whatever it's called

2

u/Solcaranth 20d ago

Dangit, I missed those options.

u/BoysenberryStrange92 18d ago

The flavour text is perfect

u/NayrSlayer 20d ago

Here’s my attempt at breaking this.

T1 - Forest + [[Utopia Sprawl]] (Land, Enchantment)

T2 - One of the myr mana dorks like [[Iron Myr]] + land (Artifact, Creature)

T3 - Land + [[Invasion of Ikoria]] tutoring out [[Grist, the Hunger Tide]] (Battle, Planeswalker)

T4 - Reify and Win

I’m sure you can turbo this out faster if you include instants and sorceries, but this involves only 7 cards and has redundancies with the handful of similar enchant lands, mana dorks, and dual/tri lands.

1

u/B-F-A-K 20d ago

Maybe you could do something with a kindred oermanent too, like [[firdoch core]] or [[bitterblossom]], each of which can give you 3 types on their own.

T1: [[mox diamond]] + [[overgrown tomb]] + utopia sprawl naming white or blue + bitterblossom (artifact, land, enchantment, kindred)

T2: get a faerie, play a land that taps for whatever mana is missing and [[way of the pyromancer]] (creature, planeswalker)

T3: untap (no land needed), play reify, win the game.

That's 8 cards including the land you discard for the mox, so you can't have the combo in your opening hand.

You can change the overgrown tomb into green+bkue or green+white and name black on utopia sprawl.

Creature types and other kinds of subtypes are not "card types". Those would give you two, not three.

2

u/B-F-A-K 19d ago

Kindred is a card type, just like battle and planeswalker. It's to the left of the dash in the typeline, and it's not a supertype like legendary or basic or world (for enchantments).

It allows for noncreature cards to have creature types, because you can't have a "Sorcery - Eldrazi" (looking at [[eldrazi confluence]], just like you can't have a "Creature - Aura" or a "Enchantment - Food" or a "Land - Equipment" or a "Instant - Mountain". In order for a card to have a creature subtype it has to be either a creature card or a kindred card.

1

u/GJT0530 19d ago

Yes I'm fully aware that kindred is a card type, and how it works, that's why it's two and not one. Firdoch core is a kindred artifact, and bitter blossom is a kindred enchantment. Each of those is two types.

1

u/B-F-A-K 19d ago

Bitterblossom gives you a creature on upkeep, and you can spend 4 to make firdoch core a creature. That's why I said they can give you 3 types.

1

u/GJT0530 19d ago

You know what that's fair enough. Mild issue with the phrasing then, but the core point is solid so, my apologies.

1

u/B-F-A-K 19d ago

English is not my first language, I thought that by saying "each of which can give you 3 types" it was phrased correctly. How should I have phrased it? (Honest question, because I like being precise in my language)

1

u/GJT0530 19d ago

It was specifically the "on their own" I think was somewhat misleading. But you were correct, it was just the phrasing threw me off because "on their own" primed me to thinking in terms of "this card is three types" rather than "this card can get you three types". If I had been paying attention I definitely would have still understood what you meant.

1

u/B-F-A-K 19d ago

Alright, thanks for clarifying!

9

u/Brownfox408 20d ago

Balanced at sorcery. Maybe legendary sorcery.

11

u/Conscious-Choice196 20d ago

It being Legendary might send the wrong signal to players by implying that Legendary is a valid type for its win condition

-2

u/AdmirablePatient4332 20d ago

It's not a permanent tho

8

u/DumatRising 20d ago

A legendary sorcery can only be cast if you control a legendary creature.

4

u/Conscious-Choice196 20d ago

Sure, but you need a legendary creature or planeswalker, and this implies that legendary is a type that would be counted. It's important to consider player expectations when designing cards

1

u/mimivirus2 15d ago

This is unironically less toxic than a lot of the current decks in historic lol

u/Flamesoul10 20d ago

Im only counting 5 there: creature, land, artifact, planeswalker, enchantment. Token and legendary are super-types, so they wouldn't count towards this sum i believe. However, [[bitterblossom]] adds kindred to your turn 3, only reducing the number of options you have.

Also, that's ten cards, out of a max of 11 you'd have at that point, if you went second. It's still possible, but I think we're approaching wishful thinking here.

1

u/althelive 20d ago

doesnt work, that’s 5

absolutely no business being an instant
