Question Friend asked to borrow my Steam Deck while playing Dark Souls
Said something along the lines of "look, i'll help you" because I was stuck on Ornstein and Smough, gave it to him and suddenly I have 99 vigor and like 20 levels more of Dex. Idk how he did it but this was my first playthrough. As far as I can tell thats the only thing he moved, I belive he used some kind of glitch?
My question is: Will this ruin the experience for me? I really don't want to start over

Its pretty easy to glitch in extra souls by doing some menu fuckery that allows you to pop boss soul items for infinite souls. IMO its insane to level another persons character like that without asking. I wouldn't say it .... ruins the experience necessarily, but kinda does. 99 vigor and 20 dex is a lot. Very strange thing for a friend to do.

On the bright side, getting back to O&S won't take nearly as long as you might think. Seriously, the amount of game knowledge you have now will make that run feel like a breeze

What?

I'm saying that if OP chooses to start a new game the knowledge he gained will aide him in getting back to this point more quickly than his first run.

Ooohhh my bad yeah 100% i think he should restart , was not very okay for is friend to do that without asking

Just use a save editor and move your level, dex, and vigor back to normal. Save editors aren't bad as long as you don't abuse them. I personally edited my save when I realized I had to use firekeeper souls at a bonfire.

Yeah do that. Your friend sucks. Half the experience is growing your player how you want to grow them.

100% understandable. Be sure to just like, take a peek and see how far you can get in an hour or two because I swear it's extremely fast to breeze through the parts you've already beaten. Startlingly so.

Thats such a dick move to do without asking first, sorry mate. Its subjective, but for me that would ruin the experience.

What an asshole! I would restart it unless you don’t care about the games balance and want to rush through. Getting back to O+S will be considerably easier since you know where to go and the general flow of the game.
None of the areas bother me now but I can’t imagine going straight back to Blighttown after battling through it the first time. Seriously a dick move to basically add cheats to your game file that you can’t undo.

Probably used a soul duplication glitch.
You now have more health and do more damage. It will make it easier. If you want more of a challenge you can always switch to less protective armor / a worse weapon.

Disgusting! How?

Bro says its disgusting then asks for the way to do it, a hateful man becomes what he hates

I would restart tbh. Pretty crappy thing to do to someone. Maybe ask if he knows how to revert it.

u/-Googlrr 8d ago
Unless steam cloud has a backup save there's no way to revert. Damage is done I fear

I mean if you boot the game up on PC you can just cheat whatever values you need

u/elfffy 8d ago
how far am I in game? if its something like half im finishing this as is with worse armor and maybe weapon. Maybe return in a couple months with a fresh char

I’d say you’re right at the halfway point.
Might I even suggest making another character, duping enough souls to get the stats that you were at before he forced-leveled you, and speedrun your way back to Orstein and SmoughAny extra souls could be dumped at your leisure by simply dying

If you just beat O & S your probably 1/3rd through the game you still have a LOT to do so making a new character isnt the end of the world. You can use this character tho as a guide since its kinda op if you get stuck/ lost you can use this character to tank through enemies making it easier to find where to go

Will this ruin the experience for me?
Essentially yes, he's made the game way easier, so you're not gonna get the same satisfaction from progressing. Total asshole move IMO.

He did a dupe glitch for more souls. Check your inventory for any swords that weigh 3000 equip load

u/elfffy 8d ago
I had 999 of the cheapest and weakest arrows. So maybe that?

u/HereToHopefullyHelp 8d ago
Yeah that's the basic Soul dupe. No way to remove or reallocate levels, so check for a save backup. If you don't have a back-up you may have to manually edit the levels via save editor (although if you get the numbers wrong you'll be banned from online so realistically:) or start a new character.
And make sure to chew them out for ruining your save without so much as telling you what they were doing. They deserve at least that much.

Yeah... now instead of learning how to play the game and getting better as you go, you just wont die anymore...
You can still beat the game, but the entire joy of the gameplay is to learn the boss patterns, learn new combat tactics, and use the tools at your disposal in inventive ways to pass challenges that are too much for your current level or skill.
99 vigor makes that irrelevant and the gameplay will just be boring from here.
Yeah, they ruined your character...
You could curse yourself with the basilisks in the depths. That will halve your health, but your still going to barely be challenged by anything until near the end of the game

I don’t think it’ll ruin your experience, but it might trivialize a lot of the game depending on your build. That said, all the stats have soft caps where anything above a certain amount doesn’t give you much of a return. So I’m not sure if 99 vigor is really that different from like 50 vigor. If the game feels too easy with that much, you could purposely get cursed to halve your health bar. Alternatively you could limit the types of armor you use or how often you heal.
Higher levels of dex might not even be that noticeable depending on your weapons. The damage cap for dex is 40, and the casting speed only improves between 40 and 45 if I remember correctly. I played the last maybe 30% of the game at 40 dex with a fully upgraded uchigatana and I wouldn’t say it felt super overpowered or anything.

Oh great, he locked you into spectator mode. Smh. Yeah now you’ll never die except to gravity.
I’d use cheat engine to reset your stats to what they were instead of restarting your first run.

u/Narwalacorn 7d ago
If by chance your new HP is approximately double what it used to be, you could go get cursed by a basilisk to ‘reset’ your HP.

I beat O&S 2-days ago for the first time, on my first play through, and it took me only once.
Although I was level 76 with full havel armor, havel ring, ring of favor and protection, and zweihander +10 lol

u/portgasdaceofbase 8d ago
Anor Londo at 76 is a smiiidge overleveled, but you gotta do what you gotta do on a first playthrough

Up to you.
It’s common exploit that I’ve done on reruns. But for me, it defeats the natural scaling of the world, and that’s where I find most of the enjoyment.
I wouldn’t call it “help,” neither. Very unfortunate that a friend would do that without your consent. But again, it’s up to you if it ruins your enjoyment and sense of progress. It’s a single player game at the end of the day
