The unconfirmed Minutes of the September council meeting are now out and two public questions were asked with both being about the Cyclone pickup. This in addition to Laurie Zio's petition.

So hang on...

Rates go up by the most they've ever gone up in years, a new council building is being done up, parking fees increase, councillors get a payrise, annual allowance increases since 2021, and the council CUTS services like the annual cyclone clean-up which was surely in the budget for the last, idk, 20 or so years?

Makes sense.

And the Mayor is off to Vietnam and China later this year on the ratepayer's dime.

How are they supposed to afford those pay rises if they don't make budget cuts?

Pay rises of the executive staff is massive, but the workers are getting hosed.

Voter turnout based on votes counted in the August 2025 Local Government Elections was 55.8% compared to 61.3% in the 2021 Local Government Elections. The NT Electoral roll has increased by 12,390 electors (8.7%) since the 2021 elections.

This week the NT Electoral Commission has commenced sending a total of 38,553 apparent failure to vote infringement notices to Territorians who appear not to have voted in the 2025 Local Government elections.

City of Darwin

POPULATION: 86,070

So lets just say Darwin got exactly what it voted for and 38,553 people tacitly agreed to let others vote in the council that represents Darwin. And they will continue to represent Darwin until 2029 maybe next time Darwin residents should get the hell out and Vote or Absentee vote early if required.

People whinge about not being represented and then spend literally not a single ounce of effort to try to control who represents them. 38,553 Darwin Residents chose voluntary to never convince a single council member to earn their vote.

This. The Council got in because no one cared enough to bloody vote, so we get this piss poor council. Darwin residents majority doesnt care, they just pack up and leave at the end of the contract.

The absentee landlords love the high rents and DGAF.

And building the biggest high rise in the CBD with DCOH, while shutting off parking. Yeah - someone needs an investigation...

Like the French farmer's, maybe time for Darwinians to dump everything in front of the council offices.

Or on the Lord Mayor's verge. After all, only 10% is a problem. Never mind that 10% is 80 tonnes of rubbish.

Cant... no parkong at the Council offices till the massive new DCOH Palace is built!

It's a sad day when Palmerston has a better council.

Palmerston Council has been doing better for years.

Athina PB seems to be doing a good job.

LOL hardly

Better than the previous council that was sacked, was also re elected with 80% of the vote. Her council also managed post Fina clean up with much more efficiency than Darwin. Palmo council has also managed to afford a pre cyclone clean up that is nearly complete now. Palmo is not the shitfight in this comparison.

I don't know about her and am not willing to find out. however I am curious why you think that. care to explain?

I've never seen a council speed run themselves into getting voted out at the next election as this one.

Hard (cyclone) rubbish collection is a normal service provided by almost all other metro councils in the country. Some offer it twice per year.

Should also have a clean out of the incompetence of whatever Executive Manager put this on the table... staggering arrogance pervades that building

So how wants to hold off on paying rates with me?!

u/Fresh_Cabinet5048 7d ago

Too much money spent on DCOH, stuff the locals!

I’m sorry. But too many people abuse this service. It’s a pre cyclone clean up but people are putting out crap that is in the house and wouldn’t be a concern in a cyclone. I am a born a bred Darwinite who grew up in the northern suburbs and year after year saw people taking the piss with crap they put on the verge to be collected.

u/throwaway8675-309 7d ago

No offense (maybe full offense idk) but I don't think you are from Darwin if you call yourself a Darwinite. That's what southerners call us and I hate that term.

But also, you're just plain wrong. Are you trying to do damage control for the council? You realise trees were uprooted in Fina? A similar cyclone can easily fuck a couch off into outer space depending on the couch.

If someone pays rates to have their stuff dumped for a cyclone cleanup, the city puts out a list of acceptable things to dump anyway. You know what the workers do to stuff that's not on the list? They leave it there.

Your claims about people "abusing" the cyclone cleanup are just plain false. I don't know enough about you to decide whether they're intentionally false or just misguided.

Sincerely, someone born and bred in the Northern Suburbs.

I was born in the Darwin private hospital delivered by dr Mounsey. What do you call yourself? Are you born and bred here

11

u/Bitter_Release_7633 7d ago

Who gives a fuck. people pay their council rates and it gives people and opportunity to get rid of their bullshit. Most of the shit people out out gets reused by others who may want it taking it. I really don't see a net negative the dump is free for residents anyway it's just another community service. in different cities in the eastern states they do an annual cleanup just because they can. They have the budget they're just being stingy.

Found another southerner

I think the clean up should continue but I agree that some people take the piss. I saw one house had rubbish that covered the verge the entire length of their property, and from the road all the way back to their fence. The amount that was there was ridiculous.

2

u/yehyehwut 5d ago

Saw similar in my street in Palmerston. I like Palmerston but that house is literally the definition of dump. The actual dump is 5 minutes from anywhere in Palmerston and you don't even need a stupid chip like Darwin you just show your ID with your address.

2

u/_pewpew_pew 5d ago

There was a hoarder house in my street and I thought the same, the Darwin tip is right there, just take it all. When the woman was evicted (I think it was a commission house) she would visit the junk and sit outside the locked fence. It was eventually cleaned and new people are in there.

3

u/Sufficient-Bird-2760 7d ago

Are you sure that some of the neighbours didn't put their stuff there too to make it easier for the truck?

1

u/_pewpew_pew 7d ago

Nah, they were on a corner and the closest house was still quite far off them.

-5

u/No-Public2533 7d ago

You just explained why it shouldn’t be continued. Too many people are abusing the service and it is costing far more than what is costed in the budget. Then people complain why the rates go up

5

u/_pewpew_pew 7d ago

It does balance out though. I live in a large unit complex (15+ units) and we put out what an average house puts out, some places don’t put anything out, and some go overboard. I think the ones that go overboard should be charged additional dumping fees.

5

u/Sufficient-Bird-2760 7d ago

So what kind of things do you consider crap?

-3

u/No-Public2533 7d ago

Couch’s, tv’s tall boys, fridges, should I continued?

6

u/Sufficient-Bird-2760 7d ago

I'm just looking at the City of Melbourne website and they give residents the option of one square metre to be collected each year. This is their list of acceptable things: old tins, scrap iron, steel and other waste metal products (including barbecues) pottery and chinaware sheet glass which is securely wrapped and clearly marked as 'glass' mattresses small rugs (no more than 1.5 m long) – rolled and taped and tied e-waste of all sizes and types household appliances (such as refrigerators, dishwashers, stoves and washing machines (doors removed) televisions, videos, air conditioners, mowers, etc.) household furniture tools & equipment toys, bicycles and sporting equipment timber less than 1 m in length, maximum of 10 pieces per Premises hot water units similar materials generally of a household nature.

3

u/Dane083-01 7d ago

I own a house in Brisbane and a house in Darwin. For Brisbane we get a council run waste collection each year, for roughly the same rates. For Darwin we get processes that we shouldn’t pay for, including the “sprouting the economy” BS post covid and all their junket flights. It disgusts me how often you see councillors sitting in business class with their paid lackey, knowing we have inadvertently paid for it too.

The incompetence and arrogance of the council members is only matched by the General and Executive Managers ar City of Darwin
