It was your fault somehow

19

u/FunctioningPyscho 1d ago

Should’ve just rear ended the car in front. It’s their fault for braking in wet conditions.

16

u/sirpoopingpooper 1d ago

If OP hadn't been driving that day, they wouldn't have gotten rear ended! Checkmate!!

2

u/Ok-Hat-8711 1d ago

That argument only applies in Okinawa.

11

u/HunterFabulous 1d ago

They weren't driving defensively enough or something

Something I'm wondering about: Do people in the US turn on their hazard warning lights in a situation like this?

Here if traffic suddenly slows down quickly, most people turn them on until they are sure the person behind saw it

u/Zither74 1d ago

The top two things in the world that can be predicted most accurately:

  1. The sun will rise

  2. Someone in r/dashcams will blame the cam car.

16

u/Round-Claim5420 1d ago

Dude in no way at all was I blaming the fucking rear ended driver, what are you on about??

I asked a simple question about general behavior

7

u/sad_coyote_undying 1d ago

Theyre just inferring something you didnt mean to imply. The implication is there in ur comment, by saying that it implies that the driver shouldve done that to avoid it and this person is reading between the lines too hard lol

0

u/Cosmic-Sympathy 1d ago

There are more people saying this group will always blame the OP than there are actual people blaming the OP.

6

u/HonkHonkBeach 1d ago

Because so many of the blamers are getting shamed now lol

2

u/sevennotsogoodapples 1d ago

ahhh what a lovely Reddit moment.

12

u/Plastic_Explorer_132 1d ago

I do. Most people don’t.

2

u/Eagle4317 1d ago

I wish hazard lights didn’t take the place of turn signal lights

1

u/Chazus 1d ago

But what if I don't know which way I want to turn, and I need to convey that to people behind me?

2

u/Chudpaladin 1d ago

This is pretty much everything I do following the rules on the road

9

u/secondhandoak 1d ago

I would only use hazards when pulled over on the side of the road. not in stop n go traffic where they could make it difficult to distinguish turn indicators.

12

u/Complex_Solutions_20 1d ago

Not stop and go, just when it comes to an unexpected very low speed or stop. As soon as the people behind have come to an appropriate slow/stop you turn them back off again.

It helps also with drawing attention if its a situation where you had to go from like 80 to 20 and then creep at 20 if there's a gap the people behind may not see the brake lights if you have completed the slow-down already and are now feathering the gas creeping at 20mph in the middle of an interstate. That's a very reasonable situation to want hazards as its indicating a dangerous situation is present.

10

u/_jump_yossarian 1d ago

I do until there's a car directly behind me and then I shut them off.

5

u/princessbean69420 1d ago

I do, especially in winter, because of this exact situation.

3

u/DaddyShreds2 1d ago

Some people do. I love midstate New York and when it's bad weather, some cars ride with hazzards on and leave the emergency lane open. Others speed in the fast lane like it's a sunny day.

3

u/dodekahedron 1d ago

I do. But ive been rear ended twice and in either situation hazards wouldn't have helped

3

u/Complex_Solutions_20 1d ago

I attempt to if I have time to hit the button. Sometimes conditions change too rapidly I am preoccupied with dealing with the situation and can't look away to find the hazards button.

3

u/Embarrassed-Chain328 1d ago

No, here hazards are typically used for going the wrong way down a one-way street or to leave your car parked in the middle of the road while you go inside to get your carry-out

2

u/Nkechinyerembi 1d ago

Technically you aren't supposed to in some states. I do it anyway. If a cop wants to ticket me for it, I'll gladly take it to court.

2

u/Bamboozler16 1d ago

We also have brake lights here in the US that signifies someone slowing down and/or stopping. Hazards are for Emergency situations, not for people who clearly aren’t paying attention to the road in front of them.

1

u/TOWW67 1d ago

It was illegal in Florida until recently to use hazards while actively driving, so... that should give you an idea

1

u/CogentCogitations 1d ago

Only if going very low speed for awhile on a high speed road. Brake lights are generally better for letting someone know you are braking and thus slowing down. Also, on many modern US cars, putting the hazard lights on would prevent the main brake lights from coming on since the US government stupidly allows manufacturers to use the same red tail light to be used as brake light and turn signal/hazard light. The high center brake light should still function but can be easy to miss with a bunch of flashing red lights towards you.

1

u/Real_Actuary_9804 1d ago

No, it’s not taught in license classes, nor required by any state law I’m aware of.

Though, I dated a woman in MX for a while, and I noticed every single time she had to brake hard or come to a stop on a relatively busy roadway, she always put hers on. She told me was taught to do so and it was pretty standard there. Started getting into the habit after as I thought it was a good idea lol

1

u/ChaoticSalmon 1d ago

It’s hit or miss. I do.

1

u/jkmapping 1d ago

Nope. Not a standard thing in the US. Some people do it, but it isn't taught.

1

u/CorgiManDan 1d ago

You should almost never dive with hazard lights on. Hazard lights use the same bulbs as your turn signals. When they are flashing, you cannot signal lane changes or turns. In many vehicles, the flashing hazard lights can obscure the break lights. They are also designed to signify a vehicle that is completely stopped or disabled.

If everyone turns on their hazards during heavy rain or normal weather slowdowns, it hides hazards such as an actual accident.

1

u/Kriiisss21 1d ago

No we dont usually turn on our hazards unless our car is malfunctioning/emergency stop/waiting for someone or something non-traffic related and trying to tell others to simply drive around us

17

u/Zither74 1d ago

Based on my experience in this sub, at least 30% of the comments will still blame you. Not sure what their reasoning will be; maybe because you only had your wipers on intermittent? Regardless, they will find you at fault somehow.

25

u/MattyIce83 1d ago

I only care what my insurance categorizes the wreck: Not-at-fault.

3

u/josh-showmam 1d ago

good job on leaving that space tho, atleast you saved the front end of your car

-22

u/No-Force-8638 1d ago

I mean... You could also care about your health? 😭

10

u/HonkHonkBeach 1d ago

You could care about not being a douche too but here we are.

-6

u/No-Force-8638 1d ago

Explain how I'm being a douche.

Health is priority, this guy got whiplash, possibly a concussion. His life can be altered permanently if he doesn't focus on recovery.

2

u/These-Buy-4898 1d ago

Reading comprehension is difficult, huh? OP was responding specifically about only caring what insurance says, as in, he doesn't care what random redditors have to say.

How you came to think that means he somehow doesn't care about his health is beyond absurd and such a reddit response. Crazy how obtuse people can be.

-4

u/No-Force-8638 1d ago

This is what being on Reddit chronically does to a person, you're way too angry for a random thread. 😅

Those with whiplash/concussions should limit screen time significantly. The accident was 10 days ago. He's already not taking care of himself by being here.

11

u/WestOrangeFinest 1d ago

If I’ve learned anything from this sub, it’s that many people do not drive or even recognize how to drive defensively.

OP couldn’t have done anything differently to avoid this accident.

1

u/Zither74 1d ago

If I've learned anything from this sub (and Reddit in general), it's that, no matter how clear it is that a comment is on OP's side, most people will fail to comprehend it and assume it's a criticism.

0

u/WestOrangeFinest 1d ago

You think I didn’t understand that?

You’re not criticizing OP, you’re criticizing the people who call out other posters for poor driving when they’re not the main culprit. Your comment was ridiculous because those people often criticize for good reason.

If you’re going to be a douche you should at least learn to read.

-1

u/measured-defocus 1d ago

They're going to see that faint movement to the left while stopping and say the OP was driving unpredictably.

12

u/ACrossBarrier 1d ago

Given the movement of the car, it seems like there were two hits. They kept their foot on the accelerator after the first crash and pushed you forward. It's good you kept that initial distance or you would have hit the car in front of you.

3

u/mrfahrenheit-451 1d ago

This is why I leave a healthy space between me and the car in front of me. People throw shit-fits on this and other sub-reddits about leaving too much space, but too much is better than too little.

12

u/RealSprooseMoose 1d ago

10/10 on proper stopping distance to the car in front. You are 100% not at fault and you saved the car in front of you from injury/hassle.

8

u/onipez 1d ago

Everytime I take a road trip for school and we go on the highway, i am able to look down into all the cars (we take a bus). Once we were in Chicago, and every. single. person, except maybe 3, were on their phones. DRIVING. ON THEIR PHONES. GOING 90 MPH.

Stopping on a highway would horrify me for this very reason.

9

u/Negative0 1d ago

Good job on OP for leaving space and keeping the sentra out of the wreck. It sucks that they got hit while doing the right thing here.

6

u/Yusuf20904 1d ago

Was it the Mustang that hit you, or did he just dodge out of the left lane to avoid someone else?

12

u/MattyIce83 1d ago

No. A white Hyundai Elantra hit me. The mustang just may have been a witness checking on the drivers.

3

u/Individual_Bat3673 1d ago

aww noooo. thats a nice car too

1

u/polarbeard23 1d ago

I started always using my hazard lights in situations like this cause I’m worried about getting rear ended. Not that it was this drivers fault, I just don’t trust other drivers to be paying enough attention.

1

u/SlayTalon 1d ago

I don't understand what hazards do here. You think the car driving into the back of the cam car would've payed attention to the road with the cam cars hazards on? They obviously weren't even looking forward or this wouldn't have happened.

1

u/polarbeard23 1d ago

I’m not saying it is a solution in all situations, but I think it definitely gets more attention than just brake lights.

0

u/Mr-JDogg 1d ago

Not sure why you got downvoted but when traffic comes to a sudden slowdown, especially on a highway, it's a good idea to put your hazards on. You being at a dead stop in the middle of the road is a hazard. Turn them off when you are no longer the last car in the line.

4

u/CogentCogitations 1d ago

Because when slowing down like this situation, the brake lights are much better sign of slowing down than hazard lights. After you have reached the point when you are no longer braking continuously then hazard would help.

0

u/Mr-JDogg 1d ago

Hazards and brake lights are sperate bulbs in most cars. My personal vehicle and all the fleet vehicles at my job are that way....

1

u/polarbeard23 1d ago

Yep. My rationale exactly. And I do turn them off once traffic comes up behind me.

1

u/Dexterthepit 1d ago

Whenever I come to hard stops like this on the highway I’m looking at the rear view and getting ready to accelerate and hit the shoulder or in this case the grassy area.

1

u/etl003 1d ago

damn, were you able to see it coming? sucks.

1

u/504_BadGateway 1d ago

Now you can get a Lexus

1

u/MattyIce83 1d ago

The new Lexus ES350 is horrendous! 😂

1

u/504_BadGateway 1d ago

Why would you get new garbage there's plenty of other Generations that are better

2

u/MattyIce83 1d ago

NA V8! 😮‍💨

-4

u/palmroadster 1d ago

Sorry, your car got hit from behind that really sucks. However, as soon as the video started my brain was saying, slow down, slow down, slow down, slow down. I take my foot off the gas and start slowing down anytime I see traffic like that slowing down up in front of me, and sometimes tap the brake to alert the person behind me that I am slowing down before I come to a stop because there are a lot of distracted drivers on the road. Because you stopped in time and did a great job of leaving space in front doesn’t mean that slowing down sooner might not have helped. Just my point of view as a driver who’s been driving for 50 years.
