That was your fault because you were not going where they wanted to go illegally. /s

Why are roundabouts so confusing for people!? Hope you are ok OP

Not to be devils advocate, but leading up to the exchange does look more complicated than a typical roundabout. Before I get wrecked, the other driver who should take responsibility and should have just stayed in their lane if they were confused and try again. It’s just their lane zigzagged three time uphill into the roundabout in 10 seconds. It should be a smooth entry so you can see the dynamics and the exits of the intersection instead of surprise. The road markings indicating where the lane was going were deteriorated. Whoever engineered this did a poor job.

What roundabout allows a left lane to turn right while also allowing the right lane to go straight? None would be designed that way. Either the right lane is right turn only and the left lane can turn left, right, or go straight, or the right lane can turn right or go straight and the left lane can go straight or turn left.

Or a left hand driving country. I'm pretty sure the road sign says Auckland, so probably in New Zealand.

u/JRS___ 17h ago
every large roundabout in the UK. watch any UK dash cam compilation and it will be that exact accident 20% of the time.

u/jjune4991 17h ago
I have and the roads habe arrows that show which lanes can turn or go straight. None will suggest two lane ls have the option to cross over each other. The accidents you see happen because the drivers are not following the correct lane marking, not because of the design.

Again, which roundabout have you used that has that layout? Just imagining it doesnt make it real.

Its not an argument. Your scenario just doesnt make sense in road design. The way roundabouts are made means either you turned when you weren't supposed to or the other guy went straight when they weren't supposed to. Thats all.

u/cesspool4us 17h ago
Mate, I don't even know what roundabout they are talking about but it makes perfect sense. It's literally the inverse of the video we just watched. Fucking crickey mate.
6
u/jjune4991 17h ago
No, its not. His example is that both lanes have the choice to turn out of the roundabout (so right in the US) or go straight. No roundabout allows that. If its 2 lanes coming in, the markers would not say these lanes can cross over each other.

u/NerveInteresting4549 17h ago
what do you think you just seen in that video... no roundabout including this video has two lanes which can both turn and go straight... it makes no sense to make a roundabout like that..

I cut the video specifically so it would show the arrows on the lanes, but I guess I need to spell it out for you shits.
Right lane (which the car that hit me is in) is right turn only, middle lane (that I was in) is right turn and straight, left lane is straight only.
The other car tried to go straight from the right turn only lane, they admitted fault and were very apologetic, saying the road markings weren't clear.

u/stomicron 2h ago
And if you suffer from arrow blindness, there's even lane markings!
What a dingus.

u/WaltzRPK 18h ago
One one hand, that road design is fuckin weird. On the other, dude was literally in the far right lane, where did he think he was gonna go lol
17
u/jjune4991 18h ago
How is it weird? 3 lanes go in, the left lane goes left, the right lane goes right, and the middle lane can go either.
1
u/WaltzRPK 5h ago edited 4h ago
Maybe it's because I live in a different country, but I've never seen a roundabout where two lanes go left, one splits and can go right, and one is only right, and then before the roundabout there's a right turn.
All the ones in my state, the road is designed so that everyone enters and exits the roundabout.
2
u/Specific-Resolve-627 17h ago
Yeah while it's not a roundabout but there's a stretch of road near me where it's a two lane left turn and a fork in the road and without fail always someone will swerve across three lanes to enter the shopping center turning lane. A UPS truck did did once and it was a red light on the left so they held up the whole road for a good two minutes
1
u/Digger_Pine 8h ago
That's bound to happen with so many people driving on the wrong side of the road.

You're not at fault but this is why I try not be next to another car in a roundabout. It's hard in traffic, though. I hope you're ok and you get your damages covered.

u/rbmotoring 16h ago
lol imagine driving next to this guy as he brakes in the middle of a roundabout to avoid being next to someone.
Sometimes you guys LARP so hard about defensive driving you forgot that we use cars to go places in a timely fashion.

lol imagine driving next to this guy as he brakes in the middle of a roundabout to avoid being next to someone.
Do you even drive?
You don't have to "brake".
You just have to ease off the gas or slightly speed up, and this will change your relative position towards the other car.

u/Freepi 9h ago
You're really taking my point to the extreme to create a straw man that I didn't suggest. I don't think OP did anything wrong and I'm not saying people should drive erratically to avoid being next to other cars. That's all stuff you made up. I just said I try to avoid doings so. That doesn't mean slowing to 1 mph. I never suggested that, you just took it to an extreme. It may mean slowing by 1 or 2 mph or speeding up by that much.
Honestly, in this specific case, I don't know that cammer could've done much if anything. That's why I didn't suggest they should have. Even if they'd slowed down by a little bit that car likely would've just cut in front of them and OP with a T-boned them in the middle of the roundabout. Clearly the other driver wasn't paying any attention to the other lane. We also don't have a rear view to know what's going on behind cammer to know if slowing a little was feasible. Speeding up going into a roundabout is generally a bad idea.
Anyway, sorry my general comment triggered you so hard. Hope you have a good day.

u/OneArmedSZA 16h ago
The camcar could easily have slowed down before entering the roundabout so as to not be next to the car that crashed into them. It’s just common sense.
5
u/rbmotoring 16h ago edited 16h ago
Please tell me you’re joking.
Alternatively, you could just not do that and drive like a normal person in a roundabout where millions of people successfully drive every day without getting in an accident. Or, you can make up an infinite number of arbitrary rules like “slow down so you don’t drive next to someone in a roundabout” and eventually land on taking a horse drawn carriage to work so you never get in an accident.

u/Traditional-Buy-2205 14h ago edited 14h ago
Alternatively, you could just not do that and drive like a normal person
Well, you could, but then you increase your chances of ending up like OP. You choose.
-3
u/OneArmedSZA 16h ago
I’m not joking? Why is avoiding being sidelong with another car such an abhorrent idea to you? Quit it with the sarcasm
Jeez this person really hates the idea of defensive driving!
2
u/rbmotoring 16h ago
You’re right, sorry. I think the cam car should have slowed down to 1mph just to be absolutely certain nothing bad would happen.
0
u/OneArmedSZA 16h ago
If they weren’t sidelong with the other car this accident would have been avoidable, 1mph wouldn’t be necessary. I don’t know why you’re so incapable of speaking seriously on the subject but facts is facts
1
u/BilverBurfer 7h ago
How about, the car driving next to them could have not crashed into them!
1
u/OneArmedSZA 7h ago
Of course it’s the other car’s fault. The point of defensive driving is to assume every other car is driven by an idiot that is liable to crash into you and to act accordingly.
I don’t get why this is offensive to people? It isn’t victim blaming
-6
u/Traditional-Buy-2205 14h ago
This is why I simply don't ride shoulder to shoulder with other people on these multi-lane roundabouts.
Either slow down or speed up to get behind / in front of the other car, and keep your sides clear.
1
u/Front2battle 5h ago
Not sure what roundabouts are in your country, but usually there is a pretty set in stone speed limit leading up to, and going through them, doesnt matter if you are right next to someone, suddenly lowering/raising your speed by 10 to get behind/ahead of them is against the law. The former one ESPECIALLY if you have someone behind you.

u/escobartholomew 18h ago

u/r_rrrrrrrr 18h ago
You basically cut that black car.
Your speed is relative slow when going ahead of that black car, when the intersection already close enough.
You basically expect them to stop for you, then you could do the same. Slow down and let them pass first.
-i know little about traffic laws because i'm from rural place, but it just seems wrong. & i expect to get lots of downvote from this

It's a round-about. They can do a 360 and try again from the correct lane.
-I'm American and even I know this.
-5
u/NewtownLaw 17h ago
But he is still correct that you better wait for the other car to avoid collisions, the extra 1 second doesn't make a difference to get to your destination faster, but it might make a difference to crash and being 30 minutes late

u/RoundSquirrels 16h ago
What. The other car had no blinker on and shouldn't be changing lanes anyway. OP was in his established lane and you're blaming him? I hope you never drive.
3
u/disagree83 15h ago
No. Just no. Even if you're not familiar with this type of intersection, look at the arrows on the road. OP's lane has arrows indicating they can go straight or right. The right lane (black car) has arrows indicating that lane can only go right. Based on the signage, OP literally did nothing wrong.
If the black car wanted to go straight, they needed to be in OP's lane before the turn.
2
u/AUBox 15h ago
No hate to you, thank you for being honest.
If you look at the start of the video, you'll see arrows on each lane, showing where each lane can go. The lane I was in could go straight and turn right, while the lane the black car was in could only go right. They tried to go straight, which caused the collision. They needed to be in either the middle or left lane to go straight.
