Literally 4 seconds. It was only obvious that this idiot was going to keep pulling out 4 seconds before the collision. If you're staring at the road, sure, that feels like plenty of time to brake. But god forbid you glance to your left, or right, look at a halloween decoration on someone's lawn for 2 seconds. This happens all the time, we all do it, let's not pretend like we don't. Then you glance back and there' a car that's pulled out in front of you and by the time you slam on your brakes you hit it.
Agreed... these comments are really confusing to me. Obviously, when you're driving, you're not fully prepared for someone to pull out in front of you at the wrong time. Driver slammed their breaks as soon as they processed the situation, which doesnt happen instantly when you're not expecting it.

That's fucking crazy to read. Bro, I prep every time I see a car looking to merge. And that prep changes... in this instance I would've sped up to close the gap way before the intersection after seeing dude waiting there and seeing the traffic in front of me hit the intersection.
Like, even just watching the wave is enough to tell me to watch out for intersections. You notice how he was the car pulled out the furthest? Read that shit.
That's a long ass fucking time. People judge pitches and decide whether and where to swing their bat in tens of milliseconds.
If this were a video game, a 4000 latency would be utterly game breaking. It's glacially slow in terms of reaction times.
Besides, how is, "they were distracted!" such a normalized excuse now?
Fine, let's normalize incompetence but let's at least give them SOME responsibility. I get there are a bunch of pretty colors to look at but maybe don't distract yourself right before an intersection where the car already in it is already over the crosswalk and has had to wait for multiple cars... he's gonna get impatient.
No, by scientific definition water makes stuff wet but it isn't wet itself
Or do you not believe in science?
''Scientifically speaking, water itself is not considered “wet.” Wetness describes the condition where a liquid adheres to and spreads over a solid surface. Water causes wetness, but it is not classified as wet in isolation''
There's nothing interesting to say about the other driver. These videos are modern day parables, teaching us what to be ready for and how to survive idiots. Not pointing fingers to shame anyone, but to highlight what excellent driving looks like and how it could impact the outcome.
I mean the reality is you don’t want to be dead right. This collision is the fault of the other driver. At the same time, I still don’t want to get in any collisions at all and I will drive accordingly.
OP’s wife was not at fault but she is still extremely inconvenienced. I myself will do all I can to avoid these things even if the other guy is at fault.
The OP’s wife has a very slow reaction time. That doesn’t make her at fault. It’s just a factor in this collision.
It is okay to acknowledge risky situations and avoid them. That doesn’t make it your fault that it happened, but when you have a video like this you can see how to make adjustments so that you are less likely to be in a bad situation.
You're right that it's a factor, but when it's the only factor someone addresses, they're de facto placing the blame on her for the situation. I get that they might not intend to do that, but that's what their words are saying.
If person A assaults person B, and the only thing person C wants to talk about is how person B's reaction to getting attacked was suboptimal, they're blaming person B.
That’s precisely what I’m talking about. We’ve created a system of liability that effectively encourages boldly bad driving because everyone else knows they’ll be held liable if the idiot hits them, and so goes out of their way to let them do it.
Hard not to avoid when it was less than 2 seconds between the time the minivan actually went into traffic and the accident. Some accidents are unavoidable.
I've been in a collision just like this. It's true that it's unavoidable if you're only looking at the body of the cars. After getting in that collision, I now watch the wheels of stopped cars. That gives you the few extra seconds you need to avoid a crash if people are doing stupid shit like this.
Bingo on the wheels. That's what I focus on when I'm riding my bike, and it has saved my bacon more than a few times. It works really well for predicting the right hook.
In what world is this two seconds? There’s over double that to know this shit needed reaction and like 10 seconds of “I should make sure that dude doesn’t try to squeak the gap”.
You don’t actually drive thinking “if there isn’t something directly obstructing my path, we are good” do you? If so, please self report and chop your license up.
Look where I live a court would rule this accident for a 60-40% responsibility 60% would be the driver crossing the road. If you ask why because in our traffic rules there is a paragraph which states that you have to do everything to avoid an accident. Clearly she could have break earlier or change lane.

She had a whole year to slow down.
