Discussion Light yagami eating potato chips Spoiler
Okay, I've watched Death Note a couple of times, and I still don’t understand this. Before I even get to the bag of chips... there were MANY surveillance cameras in Light's room. How did he really manage to look inside the bag of chips and read the criminals' names without being noticed????? I'm assuming the mini TV was muted since there were wiretaps, so he was obviously relying on video feed only. Couldn't the cameras behind or above him have at least caught him trying to look inside?? 😭
Two, why didn't ANYONE else like Sayu or his mom eat that particular bag of chips? Could it be that he was the only one who liked that brand and was sure no one else would earth them?

Yeah it was said in the scene that light was the only one in the family that would ever touch that flavor. He was able to do it because he only needed to write down ONE name to prove his innocence, so he only needed to do passing glances to write it down, someone looking inside a bag of chips they're eating isnt really incriminating evidence.

I just love how the 2006 and 2015 live-action adaptations both leave out the famous quote from the potato chip scene. They probably thought that having a non-animated Light say that would make him look ridiculous 😭😭😭

The manga didn't make it such a big deal. The 2006 live actions came out before the anime. Then the anime came and made that scene unnecessarily dramatic

Bro animated Light was ridiculous. It made me laugh the first time and it still makes me snicker today

Dont you think he checked the camera blind spots? Thats why he asked ryuk to find them all. That was like the whole point of the scene

It was said in the scene that there were no blind spots, wasn't it?

There wasn't, but you couldn't see the inside of the bag from any angles

Yeah thats what I thought, they'd like, have to put a camera onto light to see inside the bag

The thing that always confused me about this scene was how he resealed the bag

We should keep in mind that at that point in the story, L and his team didn't even know what they were hoping to find.
Put yourself in their shoes for a moment. You believe someone is killing people remotely in an untraceable way. How does that work? Maybe you imagine them painting a pentagram in blood with a doll of the victim in the center or something.
You probably aren't going to make much of someone peering into their bag of chips.
