Question Can anyone help me break down what Eloy is doing here?

u/YankeePhan22 Jan 30 '26
Elon play fast. Eloy play hard. 🤘

Second fave currently active drummer after Portnoy 💪

u/BleedingGreen23 Jan 30 '26
Maybe your favorite, but not the best. That title belongs to Dave Weckl and Danny Carey imo.

u/SauderTransit Feb 01 '26
Eloy literally mops the floor with Danny Carey in any measurable aspect
1
u/BleedingGreen23 Feb 01 '26
That’s opinion, but Dave Weckl is a trillion times more talented than both of them. If you haven’t heard him, go listen and come back.
Edit: He’s a jazz drummer only
1
u/SauderTransit Feb 01 '26
That’s not an opinion. At no point in his career could Danny play like this. At least in terms of pure chops, Eloy hits harder, faster, and more accurately than Dave. I think Dave is closer to Eloy than Danny, but neither of them have that level of speed and power. That is not an opinion.
1
u/BleedingGreen23 Feb 01 '26
It’s not all about speed and power. Weckl is more creative and is technically better. He’s considered one of the best drummers in the world for a reason. Not to mention it’s jazz and Weckl’s songs are WAY harder to play than Eloy’s. Have you actually listened to Dave Weckl? Any drummer will tell you that his technique is better, he’s more creative, has better chops, etc, etc. In no way am I saying that Eloy is not an amazing drummer. I’m just saying that he’s not the best in the world.
1
u/SauderTransit Feb 01 '26
Eloy isn't the best in the world, I never said he was. There is a whole tier above all 3 of these guys. Mike Mangini, Marco Minnemann, and Virgil Donati are all way beyond both Eloy and Weckl, and those two are way beyond Danny Carey.
I can respect creativity, but that's down to opinion. You like Dave's playing more than you like Eloy's and that is fine. Like you said, "maybe your favorite, but not the best." Neither Weckl nor Carey has any claim to the best. Weckl is maybe top 20, Carey is probably not top 50.
If you want to link me to the best Weckl video you have, I'll happily check it out. I've watched a lot of his most famous performances and I don't really see a case for him being a better drummer by any objective measure.

buncha ding dongs in here. if you want to be able to do this there are 3 main skills to work on. first is double kick. he is playing fast double kick 16ths underneath quarter notes on his hands at the beginning around 200bpm.
next he plays 16th notes on his hands around the same tempo between the snare and symbal and then goes into the next skill to work on, linear playing. he is playing 16th notes around the kick in a pattern where he only plays with one limb at a time. the pattern starts KLRKRLRL and you can start there too. play that pattern in 16th notes as fast as you can. start with just the kick and snare, then move your hands around the kit. he adds some cumball accents where he hits a cymbol and kick at the same time and you can work up to being able to do that too.
the third skill is improvising the combination of different skills into a trashcan ending. get comfortable moving between double kick, cybmball, and linear ideas at lower tempo and then practice it as fast as you can

ding dongs indeed. thanks for actually helping! gotta focus on my cumball work

u/Letos_Bull Jan 30 '26
common misconception with cumballs is that you can flick them like, snot balls. This is incorrect, they are much stickier, as you can see Eloy vigorously attempting to untstick the cumball in the video.

Dude - Great explanation. Wow... Also love that you laughed about spelling cymbal wrong like more times than I thought possible but hey... Your linear explanation is very cool and the rest of the breakdown is great too

To hopefully simplify a tiny bit here - it really helped me conceptualize things when I realized that 90% of all fills/ beats are just 16th notes spread out across the kit. Sure you might need to learn a couple of rudiments (paradiddles, double stroke rolls/buzz rolls, etc) but it’s still just 16th (sometimes 32nd, less common but still possible 64th) notes spread out. Or triplets. Just gotta figure out the sticking they’re doing for each part (LRKR or KKRL or KRLK)

to people saying it’s sped up here is the full video

u/Riegrek Jan 30 '26
Thank you!!!! I was telling multiple people it wasn't sped up, and one dude doubled down after I told him to watch the cymbal wobble 🤦

u/DesingerOfWorlds Jan 30 '26
Speeding up the video is one thing but the audio would also be sped up and every hit sounds natural. That would require so much effort to pull off it wouldn’t even be worth trying to fake.
This is that 10,000 hours everyone talks about. Otherwise known as “that guys got some chops!”

This video lies! He is clearly using his arms and hands as well as his left foot

I know the video is not sped up, but if you only look at his left wrist, it definitely feels sped up lol. Which is a testament to this man's skill.
Sorry OP, i am not skilled enough to answer your question, but i had to chime in.

u/Hungry_Freaks_Daddy Jan 30 '26
He’s doing that super high level motion. Dave Weckl is the first person I saw break it down. You twist your hand sort of to get a more fluid double using the motion of the stick. It’s really fucking hard to do if you’ve only been ‘pinching’ out doubles before. I’ve sort of gotten better at it but like I said it’s hard af to get it right.

This is all just singles. Starts with double kick singles (16th notes) with eighth note singles on the cymbals. Then he’s doing singles (16th notes) with his hands moving all over the kit, with kicks when those singles are on cymbals. I’m sure there are variances in there, but this is just your standard “trash can” ending flailing all around lol
But essentially you want to always hit a kick when you’re hitting a cymbal for this sort of thing so that underlying single stroke roll is always present.

I’d say it’s something like a paradiddle formation, but with a stabbing kick replacing certain hits. Sounds cool as hell. The kick is offbeat, probably being used as a bridge to swap hands on the leading accent per time.
Very hard to tell from the speed, and the video doesn’t do much either… because of the speed 😅

u/Normal_Paint_4648 Jan 30 '26
Slipknot definitely made the right choice bringing this dude in. He is absolutely insane to watch.
2
u/ChillingwitmyGnomies Jan 30 '26
Hes going 'one e and a two e and a three e and a four e and a" really fast.
2
Jan 30 '26
I'll try give a serious answer. Its probably just a mix of singles and doubles. Just really really really fast
2
Jan 30 '26
Kicks are playing with the hands. Hes not doing any bonham fills or anything like that. Hard to tell. I'd say he's playing the same as the last bit of the solo at the end of the movie caravan. Its just fast singles
2
u/Majestic-Baby-3407 Jan 30 '26
That's just the basic straightahead classic rock groove, with the snare on the 2 and the 4, bass drum on the 1 and 3, and eighth notes on the hi hat. He might throw in a little ghost note here or there on the snare as well.

pretty sure he’s just soloing here without keeping time, just mashing together a bunch rudiment / linear combinations for a solo but obviously faster and more powerful than most people can manage

Well it doesn't help that the video is out of sync with the audio. It's just regular rolls with kick mixed in and played super fast. With an exceptional audio engineer.

Replying to my own post here, but I’ve noticed after interacting on this sub a few times that someone seems to have nothing better to do than downvote every single answer. I don't know what the goal is, but in real life, you’d just be staring at your shoes and shaking.

That’s Eloy’s interpretation of an A10 Warthog: Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt!
He’s a phenom

u/CometZeph Jan 30 '26
It’s too fast to discern anything specific, but he’s generally alternating between using his hands and using his feet. It reduces stress on both of them while enabling extremely speedy fills.

Sorry to say, it's most definitely not sped up. Unless we have the tech to speed up his body without speeding up the cymbals.
Watch how fast the they rock back and forth after he hits them. That's normal speed. He really is this fast, and if you've seen him live, you'd know better than to make such a claim.
