General question Ritdye didn't take on the color it was supposed to

I need some help because I'm very confused. I bought this cap (70% cotton, 30% polyester) to turn into a cap for my Luigi cosplay. As you might know his hat is very green and after searching the internet I came across the perfect color dye, which is Truly Green from Rit dye.

I've never dyed before, so this was an experiment in the first place. I didn't expect for it to be perfect first try anyway. I searched dozens of tutorials, because I wanted to do it right. I didn’t have a non-food-safe pot I could use, so I used a bucket and kept adding boiling water to it.

Then the fabric turned turquoise (as you can see on picture 1 and 2). The wooden spoon I used to stir looks green on camera, but irl its more turquoise/blue. After 15 minutes I started to not trust the process and took it out. After rinsing it the color hadn’t stuck (picture 5), but the hat has a blue/lightly turquoise hue to it. My guess is that the cap is actually 100% polyester, that's why the color didn't stuck and I don’t care.

But the thing I'm confused about is why it was this color. I've checked every example of the green color this dye could turn out to be and none were turquoise. Maybe I'm just uneducated and/or stupid. Could somebody enlighten me?

How do I dye this? Should I dye this?

I wore this dress as a bridesmaid and would love to be able to wear it to more weddings, but it feels like it’s too “white”. Should I try to dye it to get the base color more dusty pink? Any tips? It’s a chiffon shell with a lining. Both are 100% polyester.

General question Is there a way to remove color from garments to turn them greyscale?

I’m currently trying to figure out how to do a Friend Inside Me cosplay for an upcoming Undertale/Deltarune orchestral concert, and I want to know if there’s any kind of way to desaturate a Woody costume (or just any kind of outfit) so that the colors fade to grey. I don’t know if real life works that way, but I figured it’s worth asking. The fabric is polyester in this case, but I don’t know if this is even the exact one I’d use.

General question Batik dyeing - fiber dye stained wax?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi all,

Made my first batik dye piece! Only did two baths, one unwanted and the other with the wax in the fabric. Fabric came out pretty well, but when I boiled the wax out, it appears the wax captured or was stained by some of the dye. Is this somerhing to be concerned about for reusing it? Picture isnt the best, but originally wax (paraffin/beeswax 3:1) was a slightly yellow cream, and its now a slightly mint blue color (which is similar to a dye used.)

How do I dye this? Is there an Idye or any dye for silk Satin that have me achieve this color?

Hi friends! I have an egg shell white, antique 1930’s liquid silk slip dress that I would love to dye this exact icy blue color. I’ve looked around, and I can’t say that I’ve found one color that matches this hue. I’m wondering if anyone knows if I can mix two blues that I-dye makes for fabrics to achieve this - and if I can - which I-dyes should I purchase? Thank you so much for any help anyone may provide!

How do I dye this? Advice Needed, Dyeing Nylon Camo Black

Post image
0 Upvotes

My boyfriend asked me to dye this black. The tag says that it is 100% nylon, but there are buckles and other plastic components that I'm not sure we can remove without ruining the vest.

Research so far tells me to use Rit Synthetic dye and I'd need a large stainless steel pot and continuous heat. Does anyone have tips or advice for how to prep, how long to steep, and how much dye/water I'd need? I've only ever dyed cotton.

I'm also up for any advice if you think I should use a different dye and/or method.

Thank you!

I’ve attached a photo of one, my only issue is the logo. Im not sure what type of thread was used and i don’t really want to dye the logo black either. I know there probably isn’t many ways around it but does anyone know what i can do??

Thank you!!!

Do I just use fabric markers? I don’t like the bright yellow. Some may say it’s cool, but I think that it just makes it harder to style with outfits. Thanks!

How do I dye this? Go from gold to green?

Hi! I want to dye this table cloth an olive green and I'm wondering if I should use blue or green dye. The thing is, I plan on using dylon which is for natural fabrics and the table cloth is 50% polyester and 50% cotton. Dylon themselves say you can dye fabrics like that, it'll just come out paler than expected. So I figure if I use blue it might be strong enough to turn green but also weak enough against the polyester to not go too blue? Would this work do you think?

How do I dye this? Suggestions for color mixing?

Thumbnail gallery

Hello! I have a handful of these white 100% cotton cushion covers from IKEA that I'd like to dye various shades to be throw pillows. I picked up some iDye from my local art supply store on clearance, and I've been searching for color mixing guides and can't really find what I'm looking for. (Maybe this means color mixing isn't really a thing with this type of dye?? Idk, I'm new to this.)

Here are the colors I picked up:

Golden yellow
Chestnut
True red
Gold ochre
Scarlet

I'm hoping to end up with mustard, rust, and terra cotta. Can I achieve any of those colors with these dyes? Can I achieve other colors using a combination of these dyes? Am I better off just to use one dye packet at a time, and see if I like the color alone? If I dye with one color and don't love it, can I overdye that with a different color?

Thanks in advance!

How do I dye this? Tips for dyeing a cashmere scarf from purple to black?

I want to dye a 100% cashmere scarf from light purple to black using Rit All-Purpose Dye, but I’ve never dyed anything before and I’m worried about damaging the cashmere.

I’ve heard that vinegar helps, but I’m unsure about the temperature. I read that the maximum temperature Rit recommends for wool is 60°C, but that still seems quite high for delicate cashmere. I’m considering buying a thermometer to keep track of the temperature.

Does anyone have experience with this? Any tips on the right temperature to use and how to get an even black colour without damaging the scarf? :)

EDIT: Thanks to your advice, I’ll be returning the Rit dye and looking into Dharma’s True Black/ Jacquard instead, as I’m hoping to get the deepest black possible.

General question Got chlorine pool shock on my black zip up hoodie

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

So I was cleaning my above ground pool the other day with my favorite zip up hoodie on. I had to add some pool shock which has chlorine in it and I didn’t think of it in the moment it could damage my jacket. I accidentally splashed some pool water on myself while wearing it and didn’t realize until later that day it had turned orange where it had splashed on. Does anyone have a solution to reverse it or fix it. There’s gotta be a way. Please help. It’s 61/39 cotton/polyester

How do I dye this? Making a two-toned yellow pair of overalls

Post image
2 Upvotes

I've been thinking about making a pair of yellow denim overalls that have a darker shade running down 1 leg, and a lighter shade on the other
I was just wondering if it would be easier to take a regular pair of denim overalls and try to dye each half as different colors, or if getting a pair that's already half-and-half dyed like the pic attached and dunking it whole into yellow dye would be better

I made this!

How do I dye this? Getting consistent Color with Nylafleece

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

This is a bit of a niche problem that I'm having but I'm curious about how people have dyed their Nylafleece. I've been working on a Halloween costume for a few months now, I purchased Nylafleece from Georgia state, and did a whole lot of testing regarding how it took color, how long to dye it, concentrations. my general conclusion was; I don't know what I'm doing!to give some examples:when dying small swatches, I'd match the concentrations for color (given by Rit) to the weight of the fabric. (so 3g of Nylafleece would use the same ratio of dye, vinager, and water as a 1lb dye bath just substantially scaled down.) I had noticed that the swatches only needed maybe 5-10 mins in the dyebath before being the desired color, if they were in the bath for the recommended 30 mins it would end up incredibly dark and barely resembled the desired shade.when upping the amount of fabric for dying (around 12in by 12in) I found that using the same ratio but upped for the size produced a more vibrant color than intended, and even then I only had the fabric in the mixture for a couple minutes 2-3.when dying my largest batch, I used the recommended ratio provided by Rit since I was close to the amount of fabric initially used in Rits color formula. I dyed the piece but only for around 1 min, in hindsight, i should've kept it in longer, but even then it was splotchy.

basically, I'm at a loss and I just want to know what others strategies for dying Nylafleece are, how much do you dye, what's the concentrations, how long do you dye it, all those things.anything helps, and I appreciate the help. :)

I've also attached a series of examples of what my dying has looked like.

How do I dye this? Help! How do I achieve the color I want?

Thumbnail gallery

For starters, this is my first time dying anything.

I am doing a very temporary cosplay for the character in the third pic. The dress started white, and it is a 65% cotton, 35% polyester blend. I dyed it with Dyemore synthetic racing red inconsistently boiling water for two hours. It became coral pink.

Two days later, I put boiling hot water in a 5 gallon bucket along with Rit all-purpose wine dye. I left it in the bucket overnight after consistently mixing it for an hour and a half. It looked slightly darker in the first pic before I washed it. It’s now just a pretty shade of pink.

From what I’ve read, I know that I won’t change the entire color, however, as far as I could tell, I’m just trying to change the hue, which should be possible because pink is essentially lighter red.

For getting the achieved color, we had these ideas:

  1. Red leather dye
  2. Doing another batch of dye with 2-3 bottles of synthetic red
  3. Adding in purple to make it darker

I do NOT want to get another dress that already has the color, I adore the frame and already have my end goal locked in my head.

Note: I know that it won’t be that shiny like the image, it’s a different fabric, and I don’t mind if there’s a stronger dye that worse for the fabric if it means I get the color I want.
