What you should know before opening an Estonian company?
Opening an Estonian company is usually the easy part.
What many founders underestimate is what comes after registration.
A few things worth knowing:
• Your company details must remain compliant and up to date. An Estonian company needs a valid legal address. Depending on where the management board is located and which address is registered, a licensed contact person may also be required.
• Accounting obligations do not disappear if the company has little or no activity. Proper accounting records still need to be maintained, and an annual report must generally be submitted for each financial year.
• An Estonian company does not automatically move your personal tax residence to Estonia. E-Residency itself is not tax residency, and running the company from another country may create tax obligations there as well.
• Banking, VAT and payroll requirements depend heavily on how and where the business actually operates. They should be considered separately from simply registering the company.
This is one of the main differences between forming a company and maintaining a company properly.
What ongoing obligation surprised you most after opening a company abroad?

Banking is one ongoing issue founders should check early, because providers key on where the company is registered and where its owners live, and e-Residency changes neither. bunq only opens business accounts for companies registered in nine EU countries, and Estonia isn't one of them. Revolut Business needs at least one director or beneficial owner living in the UK, the EEA or Switzerland. Paysera is free to open for a company registered in a SEPA country, but it treats a company that "does not conduct such activity in the country of registration" as international: EUR 100 to open and EUR 20 a month. And Wise's one-off fee for account details is EUR 50 for an Estonian company. Worth checking against your own setup before you register.
