Coltrane's quartet not being here is criminal. Another list that is embarrassingly far off.

Having any jazz groups is cheating. Otherwise there should be at least 5 in the top ten.

u/saint_trane Let's Talk About Jazz 1d ago
What makes it cheating? Miles is in the top ten, the only other jazz band they could recognize was Sun Ra at 58? Wack. Put them in sufficient quantity or don't put them at all as a token nod.

Yeah, I'm really getting tired of jazz being dimissed from these conversations as "cheating" or whatever.
If it's the best fucking music it's the best fucking music y'know?
edit to add - So fucking what if there's five jazz groups in the top 10. Be a damn sight more interesting that putting the same 10 rock groups on the list in various different orders over and over again

Glad to see Can in the list but there are a bunch of bands that donât belong here or ranked too high in my opinion. Some bands I would like to see - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Fela Kuti, ABBA, Alice Cooper, Wilco, the Cars, Chicago, the EaglesâŚ..

u/CloudsTasteGeometric 1d ago
Iâm genuinely impressed Can made the cut. Very well deserved but still not a well know band to casual listeners.
Still lots of weird misses elsewhere.

I know these lists are subjective and really donât mean anything butâŚ
-Having PJ, AIC and Nirvana on the list, but not Soundgarden kinda sucks
-Big hell yeah for Janeâs Addiction, The Jesus Lizard, Fugazi and R.E.M. getting mentions

Very possible I have a bias since theyâre my favorite band and I could be overestimating how popular or well known they are to break into a list like this, but it blows my mind how seemingly underrated Queens of the Stone Age is to not get mentioned even on lists that actually feature rock bands. Been around for 30 years now and the worst music theyâve ever put out is a single album that can be better said to be subpar compared to their standard rather than actually bad, and it was an album where they were trying something different.
There arenât many bands that can go that long while putting out quality music and never losing their sound but staying fresh enough to stay interesting. They also have two albums that could be included in an argument for being THE best rock album of the century so far (Songs for the Deaf and âŚLike Clockwork). I really donât know what else a band would have to do to get high recognition, and I say that knowing they get pretty great respect within the rock community already.

Ok list but definitely not enough 21st century representation. The list couldâve used artists like Wilco, Arcade Fire, Queens of the Stone Age, LCD Soundsystem et al.

No Crickets? The entity that created the concept of a pop band?
No Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young?
No Grizzly Bear or Beach House?

If you're gonna pick a female-fronted band from the 90s, I'd easily pick Garbage over Hole, Bikini Kill and The Breeders, even though I like all three of them. And that's because their music is far more creative, innovative and they were able to carve out their own unique niche during one of the strongest rock eras of all time with their distinctive sound. They've also proven to be one of the most influential bands from that era, especially when it comes to production and blending different genres. It perplexes me what little respect they get, especially since artists like Lady Gaga, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Florence Welch and tons of others say what a huge inspiration they were.
And even worse is the continued lack of respect given to Siouxsie and the Banshees. There are a number of artists on that list - like Joy Division, Cocteau Twins and The Cure - who wouldn't make the same music they did, or adopt the sound they did in the first place, if not for SATB. If you're gonna even bother making a "best" list like this, influence and imprint on the music landscape should matter.

u/HEFJ53 1d ago
Agreed on both accounts. Siouxsie in particular is a huge miss.

u/Suitable_Dinner_9581 1d ago
Siouxsie should be there over Joy Division. Only reason they arenât is because there wasnât a tragic death involved to boost their âlegacyâ. These lists are silly.

The Cure at number 19? I think weâre getting a bit ahead of ourselves there eh

The Velvet Underground at fucking #3? Can we please stop pretending like 90% of their output isnât just heroin addicts who can barely play their (out of tune) instruments producing some of the most unlistenable shit on the planet?
10
u/boostman 1d ago
Nah this ainât it. The Velvet Underground were not only incredibly influential, they were incredibly good.
-1
u/TomGerity 1d ago
They're the most overrated act in the history of rock music. Bar none.
1
u/boostman 1d ago
I think youâre just telling on your own taste in music here pal
4
u/saint_trane Let's Talk About Jazz 1d ago
Obviously, yes, he's telling people what his taste is. VU are not universally beloved, there are lots of people who the band is extremely not to their taste.
All taste is valid if genuinely held.
1
u/Icy_Protection9021 1d ago
True but objectively, even if something isn't your taste, you can at least understand that if list after listening puts a band as influential maybe your assessment of that band as heroin addicts who can't play their instruments is either wrong or being heroin addicts who can't play their instruments was incredibly influential! Either way....
1
u/saint_trane Let's Talk About Jazz 16h ago
I think being heroin addicts who couldn't play their instruments is what made them influential. I can both admit that they were influential AND dislike nearly 100% of the music they influenced. Citing influence as some mystical thing is just so silly to me.

u/boostman 1d ago
OK but are we saying that because taste is subjective, everyoneâs taste is equally good?
1
u/saint_trane Let's Talk About Jazz 1d ago
No, of course not. But what constitutes "good" is going to be unique to each person. You probably don't like the taste of someone who hates VU, and vice versa. Just is what it is.

OK and itâs domain-specific. I think itâs fair to say that the VU were the single most influential band on what we can loosely call âalternative rockâ, including punk, post-punk, indie, grunge, etc.
Iâm guessing your username that youâre a fan of John Coltrane - if someone told me they think Coltrane sucks, I wouldnât feel obliged to take their opinion on post-50s jazz seriously. Similarly, if someone doesnât at least respect the VU, I feel like I can take their opinions on most interesting rock music with a pinch of salt. If theyâre coming from a totally different area of music, like hip hop, fair enough.
For myself, I donât really listen to the Beatles for pleasure but Iâd be a fool to think theyâre bad or overrated.

>I think itâs fair to say that the VU were the single most influential band on what we can loosely call âalternative rockâ, including punk, post-punk, indie, grunge, etc.
Sure. But I also think all of these movements would have been inevitable, especially punk and it's offshoots. Same with The Beatles, or Sabbath, or many of the other "foundational" bands - most of this stuff would have happened anyway, just with different figures as the sacred cows. (Yes this includes jazz - someone would have eventually been a Charlie Parker had he not existed).

Accurate and completely fair. I said it elsewhere, VU was both unbelievably influential *and* I don't care for basically anything they influenced. My taste or impressions then *should not matter* to people to whom these bands *do* mean something. Same as a person who calls Kind of Blue "overrated" or whatever, I'm probably going to take their opinions and interpret them with a huge grain of salt.
>For myself, I donât really listen to the Beatles for pleasure but Iâd be a fool to think theyâre bad or overrated.
I hate the Beatles. I don't think they're bad and I understand the historical importance, but I want nothing to do with them. Should Beatles fans be put off by my opinions? Hopefully not, they're just my opinions. In the same way that I don't care about how most people care about Free-jazz, hopefully they too do not care about what non-rock centric people think about their sacred cows.

Actually i'm kind of curious about something here Saint.
How do you feel about the stuff that was around them? La Monte Young, Angus Maclise, Tony Conrad, etc.

u/saint_trane Let's Talk About Jazz 18h ago
I admittedly have zero familiarity with any of the artists you mentioned here.

I know these things are bait and totally subjective. But Nirvana? Really? Above King Crimson? The Who? The Band? Pink Floyd? HENDRIX? PRINCE? I don't dislike Nirvana, I was there at their peak. I also saw their impact first hand. But come on, Kurt isn't even worthy of carrying Prince's blouse.

Zeppelin too low.
Everyone above zeppelin (other than Radiohead and the Beatles) too high.
Putting Miles on (which Iâm in favor of) means Coltrane should be a s well.
And nobody with 3 albums or less should be on the list.

Putting kiss on the fuckin list while only adding a single band that doesn't primarily sing in english đ
