Question What movies had lost potential?

Lately I was going over the kind of movies that seem interesting on paper as the premise sounds kind of interesting since it looks good, but for some reason, the movie just falls flat on the execution.

Like one that suddenly stuck out to me was a film called After Earth as the movie had some interesting concepts such as being about a father and son attempting to survive a hostile environment as the movie didn’t help by basically turning into a comedy film where the writing aspects just end up being hilariously cringe.

I mean, that’s just my two cents on the matter since I like to take a look at how movies like that get made again since the movie wanted to be a compelling drama story that I wonder how the idea fell apart so quickly when the film came out as I really would like to know what were the key factors that contributed to the film’s failure.

Downsizing oh how I hate that movie for all the actual interesting realistic plot point it made then ignored all of them and focused on depressed matt damon

Passengers would qualify. Most everyone who has seen it thinks it would have been improved by making JLaw the view point character and hiding what Pratt had done for longer.

I never understood why Pratt’s character was a hero since what he did to the woman was not exactly right.

He's not a hero. He was a guy in despair who did something selfish and she was rightly mad about it. But what's done is done and they can't reverse it. So what, are they gonna live the next 30-40 years not talking to each other? She would eventually seek connection too, just as he did. It's fundamentally a movie about that. We can't live alone. At least she has him instead of no one. And they made the best out of a shitty situation and ended up building a beautiful life together. In the grand scheme of things, what he did was shitty, but ultimately understandable

For me personally, I would like to see a movie about a group of dimwits who end up saving the day after coming together to form a brilliant plan.

After Earth is a perfect pick, that script read like an expensive therapy session with crash landings. You can almost see the boardroom notes "make Jaden the hero, but also silent, but also narrating everything" like pick a lane

Another one that stings is Monsters University, they had a whole campus of creative creature designs and settled on a generic fraternity prank war plot when the world building was begging for something more clever

Yeah I was just taking a look back at After Earth to do an observation on where the movie went wrong with its premise since I feel like it could have been an interesting movie, but I just find the script to be hilarious.

HIM, what a movie that could’ve been, I still think about the potential of it

What is HIM short for?

IIRC - it meant being the Star

“You are HIM! Number one, the hero ☝️.”
