Saw them growing half way up a tree, I didn’t pick them and have no intention to, but I am curious to know what they might be. Appreciate the photos aren’t much to go on, but they were quite high up.

Looking for 12 Android testers for a UK foraging App

• Upvotes

Looking for 12 Android testers for a UK foraging and walking app (free to test, about 3 to 4 weeks)

I've built an Android app called UK Foraging Companion. It works offline and is made for foragers, walkers and geocachers in the UK. It has:

- Offline maps you download by region

- Footpaths, bridleways and byways

- Search by postcode, street or place, all offline

- Routes on foot or by car, and "park and walk"

- Save your own places and finds

Google requires 12 testers to keep the app installed for 14 days before it can be released, so I need your help.

How to join (Android phones only):

I've used a Google Group, so there is no need to give me your email address.

  1. Join the tester group here: https://groups.google.com/g/uk-foraging-testers

  2. Open this link on your phone and tap "Become a tester": https://play.google.com/apps/testing/uk.foraging.companion

  3. On that page, tap the Google Play link to install the app.

It can take a few hours after you join for the install link to start working. If you get an error page, just try again later. The app won't show up if you search the Play Store, so only use the link above.

Please note: Play will show a price, but as a tester you are NOT charged. When you tap it you'll see "Test card, always approves - This is a test order, you will not be charged". Tap Buy, and Google may ask for your password. That's normal.

Please keep the app installed until I tell you the test is finished. The 14 days only start counting once I have 12 testers, so it could take 3 to 4 weeks from when you join. You're welcome to keep the app afterwards, and you will not be charged.

Any feedback (bugs, confusing bits, ideas) is very welcome.

Thank you!

Foraging in and around Epping Forest.

Hi all, I'm a student journalist looking to write a story on foraging around Epping Forest, and to talk to someone who actively takes up foraging as a hobby. If anyone would be interested in a short interview to talk about why you forage and what you do to work around the legalities of it, please let me know!!

Good instagrams to follow

I recently started growing watermint. Which I think is a UK wetland native species. You can pick and eat the leaves year round and they have a really refreshing taste.

I want to find more edible plants! Does anyone know of any good instagram profiles to follow.

Appreciate any help :)

Collins Gem Mushrooms field guide inaccuracies?

Post image
14 Upvotes

Just received my copy of the Collins Gem Mushrooms pocket book and it lists the Scarletina as poisonous. I have the 2020 copy - is this info out of date?

I understand a lot of guides want to err on the side of caution, but it seems like quite a misrepresentation given they’ve listed honey fungus as ‘edible but must be well cooked’. My understanding was that Scarletina is also edible once thoroughly cooked.

Now wondering what other mistakes are in here that anyone can flag, or if anyone has alternative suggestions for an other or more updated guides. I also have the Roger Phillips ‘Mushrooms’ book.

North East England - am I too early, or am I too late?

This time last year I already collected around 3kg of penny buns - starting in later September.

This year - zero penny buns. But also other mushrooms - I only found 3 (!!!) baby boletes.

What is going on? Was it too dry? Am I too late? or am I too early?

Growing directly from the soil in a beech wood. The 'scales' rub off very easily. They are ure white inside, and don't stain.

Thanks 😊
