not so bad... gotta have humor in your life even if life gave you lemons. she seemed like she was smiling while I bet normally she'd be in pain or hating it.

I have a neurological disorder. When I drop or spill something, fall, or get called out on doing or saying something incorrectly, I say things like:
"I have brain damage!"
"I have a disease!" (Spoken with dramatic flare)
Or, I sing "Maybe he's born with it. Maybe it's brain disease."

Two more to add to your repertoire: "My momma says I'm speshal." and: "I'm with the Special Forces"

Oh I jokingly pull the "I have a mental disability" card all the time with my friends when I forget something or get really clumsy for a bit. It genuinely helps me live with it so much, just that little reminder that its OK for me to stuggle with some things cause there isn't a whole lot I can really do about it. Definitely not something I consciously joke about unless I knew everyone I am with/around pretty well though, there is a time and place for it.

yes, you have to be careful with self deprecating statements, they can have the opposite of the intended effect when over used so instead of making light of a condition it amplifies it instead, leading to self loathing.
what i like about this example is that while having an episode, adding music made it light hearted, making it fun and distracting from the negatives of moment.
fwiw, I am typical person in most ways, but I feel a lot of empathy for ppl with disabilities. except for Greg Abbott, he's is an asshole and deserves any shit you can give him...

I also like that it makes anyone outside of immediate family uncomfortable.

Omg, the last one is pure gold. Reading it, just made me imagine the commercial and someone looking into the camera saying that but being completely serious. Its awesome you can be positive with something like that.

I have severe nerve damage and ADHD. When my hands give out or Im really struggling I just punctuate it by yelling "Drain Bamage!". Makes me giggle when I could just be getting frustrated. My buddy sometimes plays the "whoopsy!" sound effect from Mortal Kombat when I drop shit. He's a good friend. Lol

I immitate the MK "whoopsy" when someone else drops something.

I felt bad at first but they seem like they have a good relationship and are able to laugh at themselves. Hopefully she’s not too brutal with the ribbing but this was kinda wholesome.

I think the level depends on the people involved. Seems like they've got it figured out.

avaonofreo on tiktok. Its her sister recording/playing the music.
It's crazy how good she is with song choices😂

This can be a fun thing to an absolutely vile thing depending on your relationship with the person

Situations like that require some dark humor every now and then to keep going.

There are folks out there who are freaking courageous. Being able to have humor in the middle of real struggle is pure grace

u/Obvious_Giraffe_3863 2d ago
I'm in hospital right now for FND, humour is one of the best ways to cope through the rough moments.
It's like a panacea, it truly works wonders!

u/CastrateMeASAP 2d ago
As a man with both physical disabilities and mental issues, I approve this video. If we can’t laugh at our own situation, we’re just going to cry about it. I choose humor.
Did you know?! Unprotected phone sex is the leading cause of hearing AIDS? (A lil shout out to my fellow hearing impaired folks 😉)

Functional Neurological Disorder

Functional?!
53
u/Throwaway229487 2d ago
It means that it affects the function of the brain, not that the brain is functional
27
u/InteractiveSeal 2d ago edited 1d ago
Thanks bud, appreciate the clarification.
I was thinking it was like ‘functional alcoholic’ and then further thought ‘that just isn’t the case here’ lol
Edit: I’m not laughing at the girl in the video, it’s truly unfortunate she has this condition. I’m laughing at my misunderstanding

Imagine the hardware of your brain is fine, but the software of your brain goes haywire- almost like a computer virus making your computer go weird. That's FND.
2
u/PeteyMcPetey 1d ago
That's FND.
In the lighthearted context of the video, what would be everyone's best soundtrack choice for their own FND (if they had one)?

You’re 100% wrong. They’ve captured the misfires within the brain on FMRI scans.

u/DaddysABadGirl 2d ago
Nah, it's ok. She knows it's funny, hence the laughter. They have a tiktok with a bunch of videos like this. It makes her laugh and helps destress and get through the episode. If I remember correctly it makes it end faster.

How is this Satan? I don't get it.

u/Greedy-Army-3803 2d ago
She has a condition that means she doesn't have full control over her movements. Her sister is playing a song to make it seem like she's dancing.
125
u/yuvi3000 Some Guy in a cloak 2d ago
Yes, but the sister with the condition is clearly laughing along with the joke. This isn't someone being satan. It's two sisters laughing together.
That said, I upvoted the post so I'm not sure if I'm the idiot.
9
u/Greedy-Army-3803 2d ago
True. I wasn't thinking too deeply tbh. It's dark humour so probably loosely fits with the vibe.

u/Independent_Soup8804 2d ago
Maybe satan's cool like that what do you know. Gave my ancestors a fruit for free once.
People say he stole it but I am sure society was more socialist back then.

If the person living with the condition is laughing then mom can get over it.

Shes is quite literally "mocking" a disabled person. But they are closely related, likely love eachother, so it doesn't come off in bad taste. Specially because the sister laughed too. I think the "found satan" out of this was the sister having this idea and following through with it. If it were 2 strange parties, or just her editing the song in afterwards we could be seeing different reactions from both the disabled person and from those wathcing it. But as is, just people making fun of the cards they were dealt, pretty healthy imo, done things like this too.
5
u/Diredr 2d ago
She's not mocking her, though. Mocking means there's an intention to hurt the feelings of the other person. It means there's an intention to ridicule them.
The big point is intention. Here, the intention is clearly to cheer her sister up by doing something she knows she'll find funny.
If it were two strangers, the intention wouldn't be the same because they wouldn't know how the other person would react.
That's the difference between joking between siblings and actually mocking someone.

I don’t understand - I am focusing on her attractiveness and not disability . I see people in their entirety and for who they fully are and certainly not limited by a disability

Functional neurological disorder, or FND. Its basically a disconnect between what the brain is sending to the rest of the body and what its getting back. Software issue vs hardware issue.

I was today years old when I found out that whole "they see me rollin', they be hatin'..." thing was lyrics to a song. I always assumed it was just a line from a movie or stand-up comedy or something.

With sisters like that ….. well we all need more sisters like that. I will probably get hate but to me that is nothing but love through some real life shit
