Do you not have a dishwasher? Has modern technology not already solved this problem?
110
u/Trips-Over-Tail 5d ago
Hardly. Emptying the dishwasher is an exercise in washing up.

u/Nalivai 5d ago
Your dishwasher sucks and/or you're using it incorrectly
20
u/Trips-Over-Tail 5d ago
I use it correctly. I battle with the other idiots in the house who don't.
But still, there are always little bits dried on where the water pooled on the bottom of glasses.

Clearly you have not encountered the Advanced Idiot™. The Advanced Idiot™ consistently reaches new levels of "WTF were you thinking" previously thought impossible. Their ability to fuck up the most basic instructions is nothing short of extraordinary.

Everyone downvoting you has never worked in a kitchen. Your hands are the dishwashers, and the dishwasher sanitizes from there.
Bit different at home I guess, but that isn’t exactly for communal use, is it?
7
u/danabrey 5d ago
Well nobody sensible is just throwing a plate absolutely covered in food into the dishwasher.
4
u/SpaceLemming 5d ago
I keep seeing videos of some person claiming to be a dishwasher technician and saying somehow the machine works better with a bit of food left on the dishes. I’ve tried it, my shit comes out with food still on them. It’s less food but they are still dirty

u/dandroid126 5d ago
I unfortunately know some of these unsensible people who don't even rinse their plate before putting it in the dishwasher, then complain that the dishwasher isn't getting their dishes clean.
8
u/unematti 5d ago
Well... It's not actually generating art. But as someone who can't draw for sh!t, I shouldn't really talk...
24
u/Pepperh4m 5d ago
You don't have to be an artist to appreciate or criticize art.
That's like saying people shouldn't acknowledge that fast food is processed trash just because they aren't chefs.

This honestly doesn't even feel far off. You know what my interaction with AI is?
Work has an amorphous quota of AI usage that we need to meet. Unfortunately, the nature of my work involves multiple systems that don't directly interact with something that AI can directly manipulate. Simultaneously, the bit of work that I've tried to offload to AI has actually proven to be too difficult for it to do consistently.
The result is that I have AI do stupid bullshit in the background while I am doing my actual work. Then I can tell my bosses that I'm using AI while I work and they see it reflected in the gobs of AI tokens that I burn through for absolutely no reason.
Thanks for years and years of awesome comics. I'm always pissed when I see myself in them.
30
u/Sportslegend 4d ago
What industry are you in where you have a quota for AI?
71
u/SDRPGLVR 4d ago
Don't want to give out too specific an answer, but I'm a supervisor in a supporting department in an office of a manufacturing company. I do spreadsheets and emails all day, but the former is relatively simple and I don't believe in outsourcing the latter to a robot.
Our upper management is just losing their minds over AI. They claim they use it for everything, but I've yet to see them demonstrate anything good with it beyond it being a proficient Excel advisor. They're pushing AI on us like they're getting a kickback on it. It's really bizarre.
32
u/Azrenon 4d ago
Word around my office is the company overspent on AI and are not getting much, which is why they’re pushing for everyone to use it. A last ditch effort to save face on a bad investment.
8
u/YOwololoO 4d ago
This is super common. All of the execs were high on Ai Hype and overspent like crazy because they were scared of falling behind, but now the hype has died and they have to justify their spend to their investors so they have to artificially pump up the usage to make it seem smart

I’m also in manufacturing and there are legitimate uses if you know what you’re doing. I’ll give a very general example.
Let’s say you have a maintenance department email group that people put maintenance requests in for machines.
You could have an AI agent monitor the inbox and place all the troubleshooting manuals for the machines inside a sharepoint library and set the knowledge base for the agent as the library. Now, when someone emails the maintenance department saying they have error code 1234 on a machine, the agent can immediately respond with what it thinks the remedy is and provide the source in the manual. Then automatically log a ticket in whatever ticketing system you are using and send the information to a team member. So everyone now immediately knows the problem and the likely solution.
If you also have a digitized history of maintenance records, you can provide that knowledge to your agent so if a similar problem happens every 6 months, it just tells you what fixed it last time. No research required.
I think manufacturing is inevitably going to end up having black boxes on site running local models (for security reasons) that are hooked into PLCs and various systems and it will be able to monitor the plant as a whole and dispatch people immediately when a problem appears on a sensor or something. You don’t need people to be as diligent. Will drastically improve quality and cut down on scrap and such in the long run.

u/Sparkleton 4d ago
One that is going to run out of money and have to fire people to maintain numbers. Those fired will be based on token usages.

A day late so I know no one will actually read this but....
The comments here really outline the biggest issue I have with the current full tilt AI rollout - most CEOs have zero clue what all their employees actually do and how to get them to apply AI effectively, so they're jsut demanding everyone meet a token quota and literally burning up resources for zero gain. All existing compute should be available to protein folding, drug discovery, combatting diseases, etc. instead of making office drones mindlessly burn tokens up to meet some fake bullshit quota. The fact that a business can justify burning up their tokens because they over-invested in them instead of handing them over to do social good is why America will likely end up losing the race to China in the long run if they don't happen to be able to achieve actual SI in the near-term.7
u/SDRPGLVR 4d ago
I see you and I agree. I'm not a religious hardliner against AI in all forms. Hell, I do acknowledge it's a strong Excel consultant, but so was Google before the SEO wars ruined that. It's also good at OCR.
But what you've said about its ability to do actually important work is so much more significant. Imagine if this technology rolled out under the guidance of responsible individuals who wanted to do good with it instead of Captain Planet villains who want to boil the oceans for the sake of quarterly profits.

u/Cheshire_Jester 4d ago
We literally have invented a machine whose only purpose is to burn capital, spent on computation, generated by massive sums of resources and energy.
And sometimes some asshole prompts their way to a funny picture.

u/dragon_irl 4d ago
Unfortunately, the nature of my work involves multiple systems that don't directly interact with something that AI can directly manipulate.
Big shame cause by far the most pleasurable use for ai/coding agents at work for me has been using it to interacting with various systems with bad UI and shuffling data around.

u/brumfidel 4d ago
The comic humorously satirizes how artificial intelligence automation might not actually give humans more leisure time, but instead just free them up to do more work.
Here is a breakdown of what happens across the panels:
- Panels 1 & 2: A man eagerly anticipates spending his free time relaxing with a beer and masturbating for three hours. However, he suddenly stops and questions his choices, asking himself, "Wait a sec. What am I doing with my life?"
- Panel 3: Instead of having a deeper existential realization about working less or finding higher meaning, his "solution" is to offload his leisure activities to an AI. He commands his home robot to do the drinking and masturbating for him, which the AI terms "Chug and tug."
- Panel 4: With his leisure time successfully "automated," the man sits down at a desk to do paperwork, thinking, "Finally, free for more toil."
The Satirical Meaning
The joke relies on a role reversal of technological automation. Historically, people hoped technology and AI would automate our chores and jobs so humans could have more free time to relax. Instead, the comic flips this expectation: the AI automates the man's relaxation, allowing the human to spend even more time doing exhausting, repetitive labor ("toil"). It pokes fun at modern hustle culture and our obsession with productivity, suggesting that humans are so addicted to working that we would rather outsource our joy than our labor.
Would you like to explore more comics from this artist, or do you have questions about any specific vocabulary or cultural references used here?

Well your friend had good taste in TV shows at least because he lifted this almost verbatim from Scrubs. You’re the one who knew the guy so I’ll leave it to you to determine if he just took the bit or went all the way and did the deed as well.

I wish I could remember the original quote, which I always thought was a great statement about AI, so consider the following not only someone else's words (to give proper attribution), but also I'm paraphrasing somewhat.
Anyway, the statement said something to the effect that when AI first appeared in the scene I was really excited, finally we would have something to wash the dishes and do the laundry while we [humans] created art. Instead it now feels like we're all doing dishes and laundry while AI creates art.
