AIDS definitely existed in the public eye in the 80s. I think it got a lot of airtime on hte news around 1982-1983. Kids at school would accuse each other of having AIDS or spreading AIDS. Then the president told us not to worry it was just a gay disease that came from african monkeys, and actually, that did not help the schoolyard situation.
At all.

Rock Hudson was really the pivot of the early aids campaigns. He announced it July of 85 and died of it Oct of 85 the first Hollywood star to fall victim to it. Help to destabilize it well that is how we look at now. But that was not how the dinner conversation went during that time the gossip was alot more like "Betty I just cant believe it that all this time rock Hudson swallowed the sausage. He was such a heart throb I had his poster on my wall I never would guessed he pitched for the other team its such a shame well it goes to show you never really know a guy well Betty why are the good guys gay. Ones things for sure with this new disease killing them they won't be able to hide who they are anymore. I tell u Betty its God way punishing them for their sinful and deceiving ways, it is a real shame about rock Hudson though".
It was not the nation wide movement we like to say it was looking back 41 years. Rock Hudson was like as iconic as the aids voice of generation magic Johnson he has lived with it longer then any person alive. 92 him and arsenal hall were doing psa to warn us about aids. Stopping a national basket ball because the players afraid of getting aids from any cuts he might get playing the game. Brought a hugh amount of awareness to just how little we knew about it really about it in the early 90s we knew it had killed over 40 million ppl we knew it started in the gays and drugs users in America that it was killing a lot of people in Africa we knew it become a std we didnt know originally it was always an std it didnt seem to click that gay sex and straight sex is still sex. That it was contained in all bodily fluids but it was nearly impossible to get from salvia alone. Even blood on blood contact wasn't guaranteed you get it. But it was constantly evolving from the early 90s to the end of the decade by then we had already had been man who was charged with knowing infecting close to 40 females some underage with hiv, mayor Rudy wanted to charge him with multi accounts of attempted murder he ended up pleading guilty to statority and got sentenced to 12 years. From the first case being brought over by a pilot in the end of 70s to be able to reach points of none detection today with treatment we have come a long way with understanding the hiv and treating people who have it with respect and dignity. It was a long journey and not a very proud or glamorous one along the way. But finally affordable drug treatment are out there that allow ppl to live long lives with the virus even able to conceive kids without spreading it to the baby or the mother if she doesnt have it.

It was a few years after that. I distinctly remember my parents being scared about AIDS being in our schools without their knowledge in 86 or 87, despite the fact we lived in bumfuck.

This is based on memory, but I recall reading that the company stuck with that name for a considerable time past the rise of the AIDS epidemic. You would think that shortly after the illness was renamed from GRID to AIDS, the AYDS people would have seen the writing on the wall. But apparently it took some sizeable period of time.

So I looked it up. Out of curiosity, apparently the active ingredient at one point was benzocaine and anesthetic originally but later used Phenylpropanolamine which they had to stop using because it increased your chances of having a stroke

Jared did the same, and also ate a bunch of Subway.

Well, I mean, yeah....I really hope that had nothing to contribute to him losing weight though.

I loved those so much. It was basically candy made with a lot of fiber that would expand to fill every available inch inside you. An hour later, you'd have a massive toilet-filling experience that would leave you wondering if it would actually flush down. Do this three or four times a day, and yeah you'd lose weight. Nothing stayed in your body long enough to be digested.
Edit to add, once they changed the formula and put in actual diet pill ingredients, the kind that can't be sold legally any more, that pretty much ended their brand. That and of course the same-sounding disease name.

Campana Company from Batavia, Illinois. Taught as an example in business school for the need to defend your product name from external issues. Compare this to Corona beer succesfully pushing the name of covid from coronavirus to covid.

I never even thought of this connection, but I loved sneaking my mother’s ayds, they were delicious.

That wasn't because of the beer company. It was that coronavirus was a general term for many similar types of virus most of which are not particularly dangerous.

It was the preferred term at the beginning of the lockdown. I know, I brought a case of corona to the end of the world party my friend hosted the first Saturday after lockdown

Yeah, claiming the beer had anything to do with what it was called is complete bullshit.
It was referred to as a "novel coronavirus" at the very start when things were unclear, but that's the equivalent of saying "a new variety of the common cold" rather than specific nomenclature. Once "new Coronavirus disease from 2019" was shortened to "Covid-19" in medical literature that abbreviation didn't need any push from some beer company to become the preferred shorthand reference to it. Then the "19" got dropped to make it even easier.

The 80's were a fabulous time. No matter AYDS or AIDS, we definitely all lost weight.

I knew exactly what this was going to be as soon as I read the title. I'm old enough to remember this. What are the odds of picking that name at that time?
