Circle an old-timey artifact to distract them with!

This passes as an activity? You just circle one of the things, doesn’t matter which one? Lol

296

u/PrismaticPhantom 7h ago

It's so the older people get distracted by telling them about the circled object

62

u/JoeInMD 6h ago

Underrated comment, and I'm not old!

25

u/victorinseattle 5h ago

Shiiiit. It worked

53

u/Zolo49 7h ago

The harder version of this would be circling whichever one was invented first. My guess would be the VHS cassette, though maybe it's the floppy disk if it's one of the old 8-inch ones rather than the more familiar 5.25 inch ones. (I could look it up but it's a Saturday morning and I'm feeling lazy.)

64

u/vincethered 7h ago

Huh per the Google VHS was introduced September 9 1976  & the 5.25 inch floppy was introduced September 20 1976. Busy month!

25

u/msquirrel 6h ago

But there were other sizes of floppy disk invented before that. The 8 inch was released in 1971 and given then sizing of the drawings size can't be implied. Sorry to be pedantic.

12

u/Fallwalking 6h ago

The label size appears to be what you’d see generically on the 5.25” disk. 8” disks labels appears smaller (in relative size of the disk) in stock images.

6

u/msquirrel 6h ago

Depends on the disk, for example these labels seem pretty much in proportion:

u/KingVolvolgia 5h ago

It's working! You're both distracted!

11

u/msquirrel 5h ago

Fuck, it got me 😂

7

u/vincethered 5h ago

Yeah that's true but the average crossing guard probably wouldn't have had much exposure to 8 inch floppies, they were mostly used in industrial and enterprise applications and didn't cross over into home PC use the way that 5.25s did

5

u/crueller 5h ago

It doesn't matter what size your floppy is, as long as you have the right equipment to insert it into. Most people insist on hard disks these days anyway because they're just easier to work with.

27

u/jakoto0 7h ago

I would think floppy disk was definitely first, that was IBM in the 60's

According to Wikipedia it’s the disposable camera:

“A company called Photo-Pac produced a cardboard camera beginning in 1949 which shot eight exposures and was mailed-in for processing.”

7

u/Uuuuuii 7h ago

Wouldn’t the film camera have everything else beat by like a century?

9

u/Zolo49 6h ago

The first camera? Absolutely, those go back to the 19th century (further back if you want to count the camera obscura). But the picture is specifically of a disposable camera. According to a quick search, those weren't invented until 1986.

5

u/Illustrious_Ad4691 6h ago

Fujifilm first released the kind of disposable camera shown on the menu in 1986

1

u/degjo 6h ago

Thats a disposable camera

3

u/thisdesignup 4h ago

I figured the disposable camera was the earliest invention. I checked and it's earliest by a few decades.

2

u/ENCALEF 6h ago

I think the 8 inch was actually 7.25 inches. I'm old af.

3

u/AfraidOfTheSun 6h ago

When in doubt round up, you've got a solid eight inches there

2

u/Raider_Scum 4h ago

The activity is laughing with their siblings about old people

218

u/Gumbercules81 7h ago

😆 boring old movie. Look here you little shit

52

u/Moose-Rage 7h ago

And it's like a movie from 2002, too!

22

u/beans0503 7h ago

That's nearly a quarter of a century ago!

27

u/xgbsss 6h ago

U shut your mouth!

Only 5 years ago. Forever will be.

2

u/Raider_Scum 4h ago

Practically the nineteen-hundreds!

4

u/translucent_steeds 5h ago

u/GermanPayroll 6h ago

Independence Day

2

u/cseymour24 2h ago

Still blows my mind that Fellowship of the Ring was 2001

13

u/kiwibonga 7h ago

They don't know it's actually Boner Jams 1996

8

u/hairymonkeyinmyanus 6h ago

Hey, not every film offers the cinema gold of “Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie”

2

u/tyman632 6h ago

That movie is on in the background....

1

u/Away-Activity-469 7h ago

That is either being remade today or is part of an ongoing franchise.

61

u/blindwombat 7h ago

I have been 800 years old ever since someone asked me at work why I had the "Save Icon" as drinks coaster.

17

u/halo364 5h ago

Are you using a floppy disk as a coaster?

10

u/rwbeckman 4h ago

I got a rubber coaster that looks like a 3.5 floppy at an expo from a Lexar rep. They were advertising their usb drives with floppy coasters. The only floppy 3.5" floppy ive ever had actually...

2

u/blindwombat 4h ago

I did for a while, like the user below I ended up getting a bunch of coasters made from recycled floppy disks.

28

u/Dubious_Titan 7h ago

What in the motherfucking fuck.

42

u/angeluzp 7h ago

seeing a vhs tape classified as an ancient artifact right next to a pancake word search is pure emotional damage

24

u/Hyro0o0 6h ago

Yknow this was 100% made by someone our age

15

u/gwillen 5h ago

And they were laughing their ass off the whole time .

23

u/CarminSanDiego 6h ago

This is bigger rage bait than their find the 14 pancakes challenge but only drawing 13 pancakes

8

u/PradaPradaPrada 6h ago

Me to IHOP 🖕

8

u/Sad_Syllabub7499 5h ago

Kids menus used to be nice

8

u/DizzyTS13 5h ago

Damnit I hate being reminded that I’m old enough to remember when floppy disks were actually floppy.. or that disks were a thing at all…

1

u/ACcbe1986 4h ago

Iirc, the military was still using 8in floppy disks in some legacy nuke systems until just before covid.

6

u/PointsOfXP 7h ago

He remembers when the Internet was invented . A CD ain't gonna do shit

5

u/softstones 6h ago

Back in my day the ihop menu was full of fun and learning! Conflabbit

3

u/MajesticResolution17 2h ago

Man fuck these lil pancakes 😡

10

u/katie4 6h ago

This has been posted so many times, IHOP’s marketing is kinda genius. IRL-to-online engagement bait. I can’t remember the last time I thought about IHOP.

9

u/Apprehensive_Ear7309 6h ago

Like as if kids today will be using these placemats. They’ll be on their phone or iPad the whole dinner.

2

u/Sells_High 7h ago

Lol this is too good

2

u/Lmysic 7h ago

DORC

2

u/pitb0ss343 4h ago

Man these jokes hit different when they were about tech my parents knew instead of me

2

u/sonrisita 3h ago

This is like the Pokemon Fossil Exhibit at the Field Museum in Chicago that has a GameBoy with Pokemon Blue and Pokemon Red in a case to look at. Devastating.

3

u/biggaycat 7h ago

Oh my, that is kind of offensive, isn’t it? Is that how kids see us today?

0

u/KingVolvolgia 5h ago

Today?

Bruh, always... 🥲

3

u/EnterpriseGradePizza 6h ago

Absolutely love it when corpos label physical media as an 'old-timey artifact' to push their digital only future on a subscription.

2

u/omgitsJohnRedd1t0r 5h ago

I was talking to a 19 year old today and he unironically said Type Shit as a reply and I almost exploded into dust

1

u/Rowf 6h ago

The kid is spot on, though. I’m utterly distractible by CDs.

4

u/deliveRinTinTin 5h ago

It should have said something like "400 free hours of AOL!" on it.

1

u/RepublicHead9989 5h ago

I am the crossing guard

1

u/PGP_Protector 7h ago

kids today would be traumatized by the never ending story

2

u/RuddyBollocks 4h ago

Are there kids that weren’t?

0

u/Jills_Cat 4h ago

Why not the floppy disc?
