I think they literally swap out the fitted sheet for a top sheet because how would everything be even and smooth when the top corner has so much more than the bottom corner
No it's 2 & 3, how the corners are stacked. The trick to stacking the corners: Start with any corner, note if it is inside or outside by checking the seam. Slide your other hand down an edge (doesn't matter which way). Put the next corner on top of the first one, inside to inside or outside to outside. Repeat until all corners are stacked.
All steps matter. Once you have all 4 corners, put your finger tips from each hand together (like a prayer) at the corner point, and kinda flop the curvy bits over your forearms. Shake it to smooth it out and then lay it down. Treat the corner as the edge point, and make a rectangle with the curvy bits folded like pic 4.
Doing 3 is the witchcraft. My mom folds fitted sheets this way and has tried to teach me, I get it about 10% of the time. Usually I end up with something twisted or wrong or a ball and I give up.

Step 3 to 4 is where the witchcraft happens. If I put all the corners on top of one another all I get a ball if shit
