u/thatredditrando 1d ago edited 1d ago
So funny that he had to summon a demon abortion to kill the guy who said it
Edit: And, upon rewatch, it’s so fucking weird that Brienne and Catlyn witnessed that.
Like, magic is largely considered myth/story in Westeros and these two saw a fucking shadow demon shank Renly
Then they’re just like “Damn…that was wild…anyway…”
21
u/PassionInitial7487 1d ago
I'm so glad they kept it from the book. They skipped the peach thing tho.
13
u/uncledrew2488 1d ago
As funny as this line is, this entire scene is one of my favorites in the whole show. The dialogue is so sharp and the actors all contribute to it, especially Dillane. The music. The scenery. The contempt on Renly’s face after Melisandre rides off. 🤌

Thormund is the best. “Did you bring the big woman?”

11
u/Relysti 1d ago
Thormund was certainly a highlight of the latter seasons. When Brienne gets knighted, I love that he's the first one up, clapping and smiling excitedly. The guy north of the wall who probably doesn't even fully understand the significance of what he just witnessed was the happiest for her.

Or when Jamie offers her the poison in her castle and she asks if it will be painful. When he says now she practically jumps at it, chugging it like a sorority girl at a frat party and then lets him know she killed his son. I never picked up on how quickly she went for the wine until maybe my 4th viewing of that scene.
31
u/GaylicBread 2d ago
Even though she drank the poison, still kinda ballsy to confess like a quick and painless death is guaranteed, he could've taken his sword out and started hacking away at her before the poison could work
25
u/GrillinFool 2d ago
Exactly. And he wrestled with it. You could see it on his face. But he had given his word.
3
u/OverwateredGrass 15h ago
True, but taking the poison guarantees there's a time limit on the torture.
Like yeah, Jaime could start hacking at her there, but only until she died of her wounds or from the poison.
Without the poison, he could have handed her to Cersei and the torture could have lasted an indefinite amount of time.

My favourite scene is probably Jaime telling Brienne what happened with the Mad King's in the bathhouse.
Second to that is also the scene where Robert and Barristan are sharing war stories. When Robert asks Jaime what the Mad King said as he died.
Jaime looks straight through him and goes "the same thing he'd been saying for hours. Burn them all." The way Robert's face drops is fucking peak

One of my favorite but most cryptic line is from Jon to Melisandre before the battle of the bastards.
"If I die, don't bring me back".
Most people value life so bad they would absolutely take the chance, but Jon has seen the other side, and life has been so gritty, traumatizing, and exhausting that he doesn't care so much about keeping it anymore.
45
u/yotamush 1d ago
All the boy wanted was to have a good time up north, ended up saving the world meanwhile losing faith in humanity
25
u/CIVGuy666 1d ago edited 1d ago
I truly think it's a great character moment for Jon. At that point of the story he has complete PTSD and little to no hope left. He's going through the motions that his position implies and demands but he doesn't believe in saving Westeros anymore. He's almost nihilistic at this point, and has a low sense of self-worth. And he turns from an idealist to a ruthless pragmatic. Doing things honorably got him killed. He will save the living over the dead but he doesn't believe in honor or any particular ruler. In his mind, "Daenerys's wheel" cannot truly be broken. Which is why he finds it in him to kill her in the end. Ruthless pragmatism instead of honor. He is still conflicted but ultimately makes different choices than he would have before.
When Melisandre asked him what he saw on the other side, he says "nothing, nothing at all".
12
u/Zealousideal-Sea-684 1d ago
I also really like when Melisandre gives the “You know nothing Jon Snow”. Every time it makes me wonder if the Lord of Light directly gave her those words just to fuck with him.

Danaerys buying the Unsullied in exchange for one of her dragons, when she speaks Valyrian publicly for the first time.

Danaerys: I am Danaerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, of Old Valyria. Valyrian is my mother tongue.

Danaerys: Dracarys!

Lots of favorites, but (I didn't see it mentioned here yet ), I love the scenes when Tyrion goes back and forth between Pycelle, Varys, and Littlefinger about who Myrcella would marry. So much better in the show than the book.
"the queen mustn't know"

u/RickVicks 2d ago
Can we talk about Karsi? She was on screen for maybe 10 minutes, had an incredible character arc, and then her death absolutely breaks you. Seeing her choose to die because she couldn't bring herself to fight the undead children was devastating. It's the perfect, tragic example of how GOT could make you care so deeply about a character in a single episode just to crush your spirit

17
u/enzothebaker87 2d ago
I really hated her death but I really liked her character. I wish she survived and we got to see more of her.

Tyrion’s confession during his trial. It might be one of my favorite episodes of TV ever, but his monologue right before he demands trial by combat is elite. Peter Dinklage absolutely killed with that line delivery, it came out with such vitriol and rage that you truly felt he was actually angry. The way he systematically attacked every single person in the room before denying Tywin the ability to send him off meekly into the night.

In a room stand a king, a priest, and a rich man. A common sellsword stands between them. Each man bids the sellsword kill the other two. Who wins? Who dies?
Absolutely my favourite scene. Lighting, pacing, framing, colour gradient, any background noise or subtle music, delivery, set design, context, meaning, etc... All contribute to the feel of the scene. It's just so so good.
It's the perfect example of the "feel" the earlier seasons had. No need for spectacle or CGI (even though I love a good spectacle).... Just really good writing

Any scene with Jaqen H'Gar. I did a rewatch recently and he really stands out with both his performance and dialogue.
He claims to not know things and he just goes where the Many Faced God takes him.... and he is a damn liar. He is always 10 steps ahead, only gets caught when it suits him, and always manages to escape. He also says "a man is not Jaqen H'Gar" while obviously going out of his way to help Aria Stark and train her. Pretty sure he knew exactly how things were going to turn out from the very beginning.

Why isn't he wearing white if he's kings guard?
13
u/ChronoMonkeyX Daenerys Targaryen 1d ago
That was during the battle of the Blackwater. You don't wear your white ceremonial garb in a night fight.
12
u/Dangerous-Speaker140 1d ago
Doesn't Bronn also mention in the second season that he doesn't want to wear the gold cloak exactly BECAUSE it makes him so visible?
2
u/Hefty-Comparison-801 1d ago
I don't think that's it. Swann's wearing his white scale when he tries to kill Tyrion during the battle in the books. The Hound is never described in kingsguard armour in the books, nor wears it in the show.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Cucumberneck 1d ago
I don't really see why not. He's definitely one of the best fighters there and slaying peasant levies left and right in shining armour would definitely be good for morale and aura farming. Granted, Knight in shining armour isn't really the aura he uses.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Lawlcopt0r 1d ago
Does he ever wear white? I'm sure there's some element of just wanting to wear the armor you're used to in a major battle, won't distract you or limit your movements
2
u/ArtfulSpeculator 13h ago
In the books he leaves his white cloak with Sansa. It was torn, burnt, and bloody, so I assume he wore it in the battle.

Well, since Arya and the Hound at the inn is so prominently mentioned, I'll mention a usually overlooked minor scene I first really noticed on rewatch. GOT's human story begins with the Stark kids' archery practice, shooting arrows at a target. Poor Bran is having no luck, and his brothers are laughing at him. Jon gives him advice. Then Bran takes a stance, aims carefully...and we see the arrow hitting the bullseye. Applause--but it is for Arya taking a bow!! She had snuck out unseen and took the shot from behind Bran!! Which took skill!
This show-only scene, which I've always enjoyed, replaced the Stark kids crypt prank one of the easliest book chapters, when the kids were a few years younger. And both started the story by showing all the kids there. In the prank, Jon played a 'ghost' scaring the younger kids. When toddler Bran started crying, Arya punched the 'ghost' because he "scared the baby." On rewatch, I noticed that both versions served the same purposes. 1) Showing the BEFORE: the happy, close-knit family. 2) Showing that Arya has guts and a skill which allows her to 'save' her baby brother. That will happen again.
