There's been a few updates. We know for example it entered full production after the release of Starfield and that earlier this year the game was in a fully playable state
I mean both of those are kinda “we’re still working on it” answers, which we’ve only gotten those kinds of updates. I’m confused why they revealed it if Starfield was the primary upcoming release. Starfield came out 2023, and we have no release window for ES6 3 years later. I get building hype for next-gen, but it would’ve made more sense to put out a teaser for Starfield as “the new IP from Bethesda.”
Also Asha went in there recently and basically said "make Elder Scrolls and Fallout or you're all fired".
About time, honestly. Bethesda has been just coasting off the success of games they made 15 years ago.
The fact that Fallout is now in the mainstream/center stage and the last Fallout they released was a shallow microtransaction-laden MMORPG-lite from 2018 is fucking embarrassing.
If they had Fallout 5 anywhere near ready before the show goes off the air, it would easily make +$1b. Like I honestly think Fallout 5 timed with a television season release would compete with GTA VI sales figures. Shit, my parents watch Fallout now. Something I never imagined they would ever be remotely familiar with back in 2008.
Business opportunity so expertly wasted over the last decade. It's honestly astounding just how incompetently they handled the success of Fallout 3 and Skyrim.
I’ve bounced back and forth on the constant layoffs and shakeups Xbox has doing, the big one was Perfect Dark for me. The gameplay trailer looked legitimately engaging, if a bit on rails. Hearing that it had been canned was a real bummer. Later though, a developer said the game was only just “starting to come together” after 7 years, and that the entire gameplay trailer was fake. I hate to sound like a chud but at what point does Xbox balk at something like that? I know AAA development is sprawling and a miracle, but if the studio dedicated to making Perfect Dark couldn’t get something together after that long then there needs to be a real discussion.
I’m not sure what to make of Asha’s tenure yet, and I know the layoffs stink, but Xbox can’t afford to spend a third generation in a row sitting on their hands. (technically Xbox can afford to do that though, because of Microsoft). Fallout’s resurgence on the internet really is something crazy, but we weren’t set to see another mainline game until the 2030s. ES6 I’ll give a pass on because Starfield was in the way though. Writing about it just makes me even more confused at wtf Phil Spencer was going for.
