Tame Impala is having one hell of a year. Featured in both the decade's biggest box office movie and what is bound to be its highest grossing video game of the decade.
I paid $80 to see him headline a festival in 2019 where I also got to see Goth Babe, Whitney, and Kali Uchis and a few others before those bands. Got there early and was in the front for all of it. Also paid about that much for tickets to his Slow Rush tour, lower bowl pretty close to the stage, but it got postponed due to COVID, then eventually cancelled all together.
It's shocking how much ticket prices have risen since then. Not just with Tame, but in general.
It means that the notion it was out of mainstream is delusional. $400 concert tickets, that sell out, is not indicative of anything other than mainstream.
He's not psych rock anymore though. That genre is still out of mainstream. His pop songs are what made him blow up, and good for him on that, he's insanely talented and deserves it, but I selfishly miss the style of the first couple of albums.
Thankfully there is still Pond who fills that void pretty well.
You could argue its nowhere close to the original tame impala stuff before the less i know the better, but compared to the broader 'pop' during 2010s its a massive difference
its not coincidence, He sold his entire song catalog and future songwriting works to Sony Music. Spider-man is from Sony. so they are making money with their own stuff tbf
