Hot Take: I liked Hellraiser: Revival more than Silent Hill: Townfall and Resident Evil 9. My Horror Game of the Year without a doubt
The gameplay in all of these games is nothing to write home about, but for me Hellraiser killed it with a consistently killer sense of aesthetic, and a really dope dark story. It definitely got more of a reaction out of me than either of the other 2. And it’s only $40 vs $70

Good hot take. Accurate use of the term when people are down voting because you said their favorite game wasn't the best.
The trailer looks good. I'll get it once it's on sale.

Its only $40 full price and well worth it. Im with OP in that its WAY horror game than RE9, but haven't played Townfall yet
49
u/MARATXXX 6h ago
The first half of Requiem is no slouch in the horror department

u/DonutHoles4Ever 3h ago
These posts are funny because OP is doing a lot of heavy lifting for GOTY based on PRICE alone.
You can't judge a game based on its price. Either its a good game or not. Whether its a great value isn't how ratings on games are judged.
So OP basically like "we should factor in price for...GOTY" which is ??? compared to normally "price is factored in for answer if its a good purchase right now"
12
u/MycologistWhich 2h ago
I guess you skipped past the first part of his explanation and went straight to the price as if it was the only thing he stated he liked about the three.
Hellraiser killed it with a consistently killer sense of aesthetic
and a really dope dark story
It definitely got more of a reaction out of me than either of the other 2

u/Cookie_Cracker123 6h ago
I would say it has more of a horror atmosphere than RE9 but requiem is definitely wayyyy scarier than hellraiser. After the charlotte fight it didn't feel really scary at all.
14
u/lemonylol 5h ago
Yeah Resident Evil games in general do a great job of making you feel overwhelmed and losing the war of attrition against waves of enemies, but Hellraiser felt more like Bioshock in gameplay, especially with enemy behaviour.

Modern RE games do a good job of dialing in the creepy atmosphere at the start, but then kinda quickly devolve into heavy action
11
u/II_Zyler 5h ago
To me that is every Resident Evil. Even 7 became an action shooter after a certain point. I haven't played Code veronica and requiem yet however.

I feel like people are forgetting that only half of RE9 is horror and the other half is action; and it was done that way intentionally.

Townfall is great. Best Silent Hill game in a long time. But Hellraiser Revival does something completely new for horror games. I'm not sure how much I'd weigh them against each other, given how radically different their tone is, but I certainly recommend both games.

To prefer one over the other is perfectly fine but to say that the gameplay in Hellraiser is on par with RE9 is crazy talk.

u/Tinsonman 6h ago
Agreed, I absolutely love both franchises and loved both games, but in terms of gameplay it's not even close. Hellraiser's gameplay is serviceable at best.

I would even say playing with Leon is one of the best Third Person Shooting Gameplay I know at all.
Trying to trigger a stagger to execute them with Axe or Fighting Moves is so satisfying.→ More replies (2)→ More replies (20)3
u/awyeauhh 5h ago edited 5h ago
Yeah this post has to be astroturfed to hell, re9 was by far the better and more polished game. Gameplay, as you said, isn't even comparable (especially for the Leon segments). Hellraiser looked great, and the "hell/maze" segments were sick, but the gameplay was complete ass, enemies barely registered being hit and then just died when enough damage was accumulated, outside of the cuhe chain which was honestly kinda badass (I personally feel they should have done an outlast and cut combat almost completely). Vs Resi 9 which also looked great, your weapons actually had some "oomph" to them (loved the hatchet), and had replayability in that you can unlock the perks through playing the game on different difficulty levels/speeds etc vs Hellraiser where you can replay to the end and change your choice I guess? (Which RE9 also had lmao)
edit: also, in terms of straight "horror", the Grace segments in re9 were way, way better than anything hellraiser had. I actually felt vulnerable as grace, vs hellraiser just relied on shock horror, which I find kinda boring and contrived tbh

I'll share my hot take. Cronos The New Dawn is better than all of them
→ More replies (2)2
u/LancobusUK 2h ago
Better survival horror game probably. Cronos has the best tight resourcing system I’ve seen in a game. Resident evil games always struggle with this and you end up buying like Arnold in commando around the mid game point which removes all tension completely. RE9 did this a bit better but the racoon city section of the game was genuinely pants for me and a real step back in quality vs the hospital with grace.
Hellraiser is a great game though, especially at its price point. Would love to see a sequel. I’d also love to see the same studio take on something equally as hard to get right vs the source material - an aliens colonial marines game!

u/Quixoticish 8h ago
Hellraiser, Townfall, Silver Pines, Requiem, Sinking City 2... It's been a good year and they're all absolutely solid.
The only one that hasn't grabbed me is Control Resonant, and I loved the original Control immensely.
23
8
u/indamoufofmadness 8h ago
I feel mostly the same. I gave Resonant more than a dozen hours, but it's just not pulling me in the way Control did. I don't regret buying it, though, Remedy earns my money with their games.
2
u/Ok_Letterhead7661 4h ago
For me, the start of Resonant was interesting, the mid game was alright, then the end was great. It has some of the best visuals I've seen in a game.
→ More replies (2)2
u/Quixoticish 7h ago
I dislike the open world, it feels a bit "go here, fetch this, do this thing". Control worked so well for me due to the slightly claustrophobic brutalist setting. I miss that a lot.
4
u/indamoufofmadness 7h ago
I don't mind that so much, though I do feel like the original had a more Metroidvania feel in exploring The Oldest House (which I am an absolute sucker for).
The combat mobs feel...unsatisfying? Maybe that's because I chose the dual wield option in the beginning, but it just feels like encounters are an exercise in whittling enemies down on their health then hopping to the next one. Might be more fun if I had chosen the hammer or glaive - I'll have to restart.
I think what bugs me most is that, for a Remedy games, it's really ugly up close. At a distance, things look great - but get into a dialog and both Dylan and his discussion partner look grainy and weird. Might just be a base ps5 thing, though.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)2
u/empathetical 7h ago
yeah I uninstalled Resonant halfway then reinstalled it because I did want to see it through. Glad I did... end of the game world was cool aF. but yeah...i wouldn't replay the game. I've replayed the first one about 4 times now tho
12
u/OneSmellyFoot 8h ago
Hands down. It such a fun game and an interesting look into the Hellraiser lore.
4
u/Kommander-in-Keef 8h ago
It’s also apparently the canonical continuation of the story which is pretty cool.
2
u/onexbigxhebrew 7h ago
Does it dig more into the early lore or the later more straight biblical lore?
→ More replies (1)5
u/TempMobileD 7h ago
Having finished it, I don’t think there was a single reference to anything biblical except for one line where a human character says something along the lines of ‘I never want to go back into that hell’ referring to the labyrinth, and Pinhead says ‘this is not your hell’.
As far as I recall, that’s it.→ More replies (1)3

u/austinite89 2h ago
Loved RE9 and I’m loving Townfall. In the middle of Townfall and Hellraiser currently. Been playing RE and SH since the beginning in the 90s and the original SH is my favorite game of all time. In fact, SH is my favorite video game series.
All that said, Hellraiser is honestly better than both RE9 and Townfall. I’m having a blast playing this game. Mind you, that’s not an insult to RE and SH. Hellraiser is just more fun to me. They perfectly captured the feel of the movies. Only thing I could do without is the chasing parts with the Chatterer. Other than that, I’m loving it.

Games developed quite clearly by passionate fans of a classic franchise always shine to me. Terminator: Resistance, Robocop: Rogue City, and now Hellraiser: Revival... yeees, give me more earnest adaptations of classic film franchises please.
Would love an Alan Wake style game based on something like The Fog. Or maybe an Event Horizon spinoff.

Its gameplay is miles behind Requiem.
That said, I was expecting this to be rubbish. Its not. Its pretty damn good.
They did an amazing job of bringing the Hellraiser verse to life in-game. Everyone involved deserves huge credit. Considering it's lower price, it's a great buy for horror fans.
Silent Hill was disappointing tbh. Better than the last one, but still missing what made SH2 so special.
7
u/That-Beach8539 8h ago
wild take but I get it, sometimes the vibes and story hit harder than gameplay. it’s cool to see something fresh in the horror genre, low price helps too.
2
u/Almightysmeg 8h ago
I havent played townfall yet but I agree I enjoyed it more than re9. I just loved hellraiser and had a blast with it. All I wanted from a hellraiser game I had a big grin on my face I wasnt expecting it to be that good. Re9 was still fun aswell, didnt enjoy it as much as 7 and 8, was more of the same old but its good.

I really want share your enjoy but idk. I like the graphics, the style but the animations of stealth killing, fighting, shooting is just meh. Also for really gore game, when you stealth kill someone, I expect atleas some wound or damage. Its 2026, like a c'mon. Give us finally some proper body damage in gore games.
The gameplay for me is not satysfying as in RE series.
But its deffinetly really good horror game.
For now I have high expectations for "ILL"

u/MizutsuneMH 7h ago
I loved Hellraiser, but still prefer Requiem, which is my game of the year. I’ll be doing Townfall soon after the recent patch which fixed some of the initial issues. Don’t sleep on Hellraiser though, it’s very good.

u/Goblin_Jakic 8h ago
That’s a extremely hot take. I haven’t played townfall but really enjoyed RE9. Grace annoyed me a bit with her stammering but all in all solid. Hellraiser I was actually not really loving it until it all came together in the end. I felt like they didn’t really “get” Hellraiser besides the shocking gore. In some respects I feel like they still don’t fully get it. However the story all came together in the end and felt like Hellraiser to me.
3
u/TsukinoBunny 8h ago
Honestly all 3 hit for me. I feel they really did each of their series crazy good justice. I’m eating good asf as a survival horror fan.
Hellraiser revival specifically is probably one of the best entries in the franchise as a whole.

I'm playing the demo right now, about 20min in.
I'm too scared and needed a break, wtf is this? Also for a minute or two I thought I was playing an XXX game.
I also needed the break to look up to make sure I'm not playing a porn game, and just learned that it's based on a beloved horror movie I had never heard of.
EDIT: It's too much for me, I can't handle the gore, I feel dizzy. But the horror elements are also pretty scary. Definitely an interesting game if you are into gore and horror... and I guess BDSM?

u/Ryanshaw481 7h ago
hellraiser revival is alright. not bad by any means but it just gets a little stale after halfway. feels like a temu RE8

u/veno-mous-_-o 8h ago
Not sure about silent hill but i think RE9 is very different from Hellraiser so kinda hard to compare them.
2
u/Alt_SWR 7h ago
To anyone wanting an alternative to these big budget horror games and who's on PC, check out Silver Pines. It's kinda like RE mixed with SH but also partially metroidvania. There's a demo so you don't even have to buy it either.
It easily blew me away more than any other horror game in quite a while.
3
u/Sad-Strike5709 3h ago
HR felt like a B game to me, not that is a bad thing. It wasn't trying to be a AAA game. But it was solely a broad body horror with easy puzzles and themepark gameplay. Looking forward to playing it on the hardest mode for a a challenge... one day.

Still couldn't finish re9, basement was too scary. Even with mods, no audio, or playing with eyes closed (though that was more-so I couldn't shoot/move properly but it helped).

u/steamart360 7h ago
Hellraiser didn't hold anything back so it makes sense it's seen as the best horror game. I enjoyed RE8 more because it's more fun to play but yeah, the horror wasn't really there.
1
u/Charrbard 7h ago
I can see it. Video game horror is still fairly tame imo. They can do violence, gore, and Cthulhu well enough but few push the envelope else where. Hellraiser dropped sex, bdsm, etc front and center. It helps give it that sinister taboo vibe we don't get after growing so used to violence and gore.
Only other games on steam going into that (other than those "eh" succubus/agony games) was the Lust for Darkness series. They go quite a bit farther than even Hellraiser. They even tied unique story stuff into two of their demos to squeeze in more narrative.

u/mister2forme 6h ago
Townfall was a huge letdown to me. The story made very little sense and did very little to actually tie the abstracted pieces of the game into the plot. The puzzles sometimes felt like the developer was outthinking itself for the sake of. And the stealth just sucked.
1
u/grievous_swoons 6h ago

Hellraiser definitely is one of those games where if you like the universe, the game is worth looking at. For me, hearing Doug Bradley as the Hell Priest (Pinhead) again was like seeing an old friend after years apart.
(He actually does a lot of voice work these days- not just horror stuff.)

If they keep improving the game play to the point its as good as the visual design Hellraiser could be one of the top horror series for sure. It'll probably never have the market share Resident Evil has but it could be something really special.

Game has been buggy as hell for me on a standard PS5. I can't in good faith rank it over a game like RE9 which is extremely polished. Hellraiser is a more unique gaming experience but it does nothing better than RE9.
1
u/PJthePlayer 5h ago
The gameplay itself is too mediocre for me. Out of the three you listed, Resident Evil Requiem takes it by a mile IMO
1
u/Nekrokosmic 5h ago
Easily better than RE9 considering the second half of requiem was a boring attempt at recreating RE4.
I say that as a diehard RE fan
1
1
u/internetsarbiter 5h ago
Gameplay wise, Hellraiser is just a mediocre puzzle shooter, but, it is an excellent Hellraiser story that more or less negates how terrible every other bit of Hellraiser media has been since the first two movies.
1
u/cremvursti 5h ago
Hellraiser is the best one just because of the fact that it brings something fresh in terms of storytelling, even though it's a universe that at this point is like 40 years old.
Sure, gameplay may be jank, but it explores themes that are not that often approached by games, something which can't be said about the SH and RE games launched this year.
1
u/Background-Sea4590 5h ago edited 5h ago
I absolutely adore Hellraiser: Revival, and I might say I enjoyed it more than both of those games, sure. At the same time, I wouldn't dare to say it's a better game than, at least, RE9. Specially because I can’t forget the fact that I’m a fan of the movies, so it’s hard to be objective about the game. I love Hellraiser because they nailed aesthetics and atmosphere of the first two movies. Gameplay is just serviceable though.
EDIT: Also, my main issue with RE9 is the second half, which is... iffy at best. I think it's a tad overrated.
1
u/prossnip42 5h ago
Gameplaywise it's nothing special but, to me, much like the Mad Max game, Hellraiser has one of the most unique aesthetics for a horror IP and that shoots it up above the other two in how much i personally like it
1
u/Important_mitt6972 5h ago

“The gameplay in all these games is nothing to write home about” is quite the statement when RE9 clears pretty much any horror game that’s come out the past 5 years lmao, BUT it wouldn’t be a hot take if you didn’t say something like that so hey fair play

It's an ok game, I finished it, combat exists, story was fun all the cult stuff I enjoyed as well as the absolute sheer nudity, hardcore stuff on display was refreshing to see. Loved the gore too but by the end kinda got tired of the game even though it's so small, re9 by far is wayyy better than this on all fronts, story, gameplay.
Haven't finished townfall but atmosphere wise, townfall over both of them
1
u/dr_zoidberg590 4h ago
Absolutely, Hellraiser blows the rest away, with Silent Hill Townfall limping in last place many bad decisions made in that game's design.
1
u/Store_Plenty 3h ago
HR feels amateurish in the gameplay department tbh. Just a hodge-podge of borrowed ideas that never becomes more than the sum of its parts. Great vibes though, the artists and writers nailed it.
1
u/fertff 3h ago
Silent Hill Townfall was such a letdown. They really need to get past the “every main character has deep trauma “ thing. Give us back the times where it felt like anyone could end up in Silent Hill… fight the cult, stopping demons from rising, stuff like the first 4.
The worst thing about Townfall is that it could have been called anything else and won’t change anything. There is zero connection to the franchise. Worst of all, Everything is a freaking coma dream, and it is pretty obvious at the beginning that nothing is real.

I guess everyone has their own opinion. I can see townfall being lower, since it felt very uninspired but frankly requiem was just amazing, especially if you were long term invested. The pay off in that gam felt palpable honestly.

It's fine to have that opinion. I disagree, and find Requiem far superior. Townfall is more interesting to me than Hellraiser to continue playing. What is interesting about Hellraiser is the aesthetic. The execution isn't great, which is basically my opinion of the first movie as well. The monsters and ideas are cool, but the actual story/execution is not great.

Agreed. For me personally Hellraiser Revival is currently my game of the year. Had more fun and enjoyment with it than most other games from this year. The Hellraiser aesthetic just looks so damn cool. Also fuck Sunny, Aiden deserved better. I’ve been told to check out the first 2 movies and now I’m thinking I just might.
