Literally what happened to my friend fr

I see Serbs are unaware of the Ranilug Incident of 1999.

In actuality Russians and Serbs don't mix that well in Serbia

3

u/Prince_Hastur 5d ago

This is literally not what happens lol. There are Russians in Serbia, but no one welcomes them like this, local people don't really care about them. They did bring a lot of money into the country though and are willing to pay outrageous rents.

Russians mostly keep to themselves, rarely visit same places as the local population and generally spend time in their own little communities they built over time. They are usually quiet and barely noticeable.

6

u/woronwolk 5d ago

I've heard it's a pretty common exchange with taxi drivers. Not just in Serbia though, a friend of mine moved to Ireland from Russia and he had several encounters where taxi drivers would express their love for putin after learning he's from Russia, and be surprised when he'd tell them he's actually very much anti-putin and pro-Ukraine

1

u/xEWURx 5d ago

Hah, I have just read a post from a russian girl who went to Hungary, and she says local people mostly ignore russians, she hasn't made any local friends yet, and this is after a couple of months. Now she is looking for a russian community since this is the only way to overcome this crushing loneliness. I suppose there us not much difference between how locals treat russians in Serbia and in Hungary. Big thanks to serbs and hungarins for not expressing any hatred towards russians anyways.

1

u/arhisekta92 5d ago

I don't think we ignore them, it's more so that they brought their whole ecosystem and logistics. A lot of them are financially well-standing, so they bought a ton of clubs, caffes, opened a bunch of businesses (tattoos, carpenters, guitar store, etc). in some aspect, they really showed us where the standard should be in regards to business, but they do end up mostly going to clubs where the russians hang out. though it's not as exclusive as it seems, they do kinda stick to each other socially.

1

u/szczur_nadodrza 4d ago

This guy has probably met a Serb from Bosnia tbh

1

u/laika0203 5d ago

Yes this is always what russians do everywhere. Then in 50 years they are annexing your territory to protect the "native russian speakers". Its why its such a big country relative to the rest of slavdom. Endless settling of others lands.

UKRAINE has been an independent sovereign nation since 1991 but the Soviet-era versions of many geographic names stubbornly persist in international practice. The transliterations of the names of cities, regions and rivers from the Cyrillic alphabet into Latin are often mistakenly based on the Russian form of the name, not the Ukrainian; the most misspelled names are:

Archaic Soviet-era spelling Correct modern spelling
Chernigov Chernihiv
Chernobyl Chornobyl
Dnieper/Dnepr Dnipro
Kharkov Kharkiv
Kiev Kyiv
Lugansk Luhansk
Lvov/Lwow Lviv
Nikolaev/Nikolayev Mykolaiv
Odessa Odesa
Rovno Rivne
Ternopol Ternopil
the Ukraine Ukraine

Under the Russian empire and later the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), Russification was actively used as a tool to extinguish each constituent country’s national identity, culture and language. In light of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, including its illegal occupation of Crimea, we are once again experiencing Russification as a tactic that attempts to destabilize and delegitimize Ukraine. You will appreciate, we hope, how the use of Soviet-era placenames – rooted in the Russian language – is especially painful and unacceptable to the people of Ukraine.

If only Serbia didn't start the first world war, everything went downhill from there.

4

u/Prince_Hastur 5d ago

Serbia did not start WW1, Austria-Hungary did. Serbia agreed to all requests except one, which no sovereign country would agree to, but Austria-Hungary was pressured by Germany to declare war anyway.

If Sarajevo assassination did not happen, something else would have. Both sides were ready for war and it was becoming too costly and inconvenient to maintain that status.

u/proboscislounge 5d ago

Imagine fleeing from Russia to Serbia, instead of becoming a heroic partisan to liberate your country from tyranny.

Why are you on Reddit instead of becoming a heroic war hero who will defeat the tyranny?

Rule 4: Be nice to each other

3

u/proboscislounge 5d ago

Fixing Russia is nobody's responsibility but the Russians, full stop.

3

u/SA1DEN 5d ago

I don't know what kind of a fairytale world with unicorns and rainbows you're living in, but perhaps if you were living in Russia or at least spent some time there, you would understand that there's virtually nothing a regular Russian citizen can do in a military dictatorship to change things. Perhaps the most such a person could do is flee the country (which not everyone has the opportunity to do, you know), or openly voice their opinion and go to prison or get killed shortly after.

5

u/proboscislounge 5d ago

Ah right, Russia. Famous for never revolting against strongmen.

7

u/CyberJglDuck 5d ago

Revolutions don't happen on their own. They require leadership, connections, and funding

5

u/qwadrat1k 5d ago

Finally I see someone else who understands that

2

u/proboscislounge 5d ago

0

u/CyberJglDuck 5d ago

Ukraine had a strong opposition in parliament, and some influential political and business figures supported a change in government. So this example only proves the rule.

1

u/proboscislounge 5d ago

The rule?? 108 Ukrainians stepped up and died to eject their Russian puppet government. You won't be hand waving their sacrifice away, bastard. The Russian people are cowards, they know nothing about freedom or sacrifice. The only Russians worth a damn are the partisans.

If they won't even fight for their own liberty, why the hell would any other country want them to come freeload in their land? Does anyone honestly believe they'll take up arms and fight for their new hosts if it came down to it? No, of course not, they'd just flee somewhere else. So stay home and fight, nobody wants to absorb more malingering Russian cowards.

1

u/CyberJglDuck 5d ago

Maximalism is cute, but there's real life to deal with. It's easy to be brave when you're completely safe. Those 108 deaths could have been in vain if it hadn't been for support from above. The brave people of Belarus protested, but all it led to was repression.

Thousands of Russians are in prison for speaking out against the war or the government. It's hard to say exactly how many there are, as sometimes drugs are simply planted during searches. None of this has any effect on Putin, even if a million people end up behind bars.

I can forgive it though honestly. For conscientious Russians its rough, so the fact they even just getting out of Russia, they getting themselves out of the system that forces them to be part of the problem.

I know it ain't easy having sympathy for the devil, especially given all the shit other russians are giving Ukraine, Georgia, Europe, the US, and literally the entire word.

I dunno, I like to think we can break through Putler's fascism and ways of hate and reach the human behind labels and bring them out of the the bullshit the Kremlin instills upon them. If we dehumanise the ones who want to get away from all that, we just chase them away into the arms of groups that accept them - like the Kremlinistas and those supporting the war.

5

u/Shamaev27 5d ago

The Russian opponents of the Putlerite regime are supported by each other and support from you. Thanks

2

u/Lord_Ezelpax 5d ago

it's more of a fix the the problem or run away from the problem type of deal. It's fine on the individual level, but on the macro scale, if everyone moved, there'd be only old people and drunks left for putin to rule over

4

The Russian people spent decades encouraging Putin and his thugs to consolidate power, and we're meant to feel bad for them because they're now too helpless to do anything about it? No, no, I'm sorry it doesn't work that way. They're obligated to fix the bullshit they unleashed on the world, and they especially owe it to their Ukrainian neighbors.

Young or old, they can all do something about it now. This notion that Russians are weak, helpless, pawns without agency is so tired. The victimization fetishism disgusts me. If the Ukrainians could do it, they can do it too.

My mother-in-law in Kyiv sleeps in the bathroom every night because of non-stop air raids, and my father-in-law in Nikopol dodges "human safari" drones on his way to the market. You think I give one single fuck if some troglodyte in Moscow is depressed because his country is a real bummer? No, I have zero sympathy. I think they should wake up real late at night, strap some fuckin boots on, slink out into the shadows, and commit acts of sabotage against the state, and grind down their piece of shit government until it collapses in on itself.

There are such people in Russia, but what happens to them? they put them in prison for 20 years and forget about them, and for what? For the sake of people who will continue to hate them, have you ever thought about saying thank you to those people who gave their lives in order to help you in some way? Most of them are teenagers who had their whole lives ahead of them.

4

u/SA1DEN 5d ago

If you support Ukraine, and I assume you are, I hope you're already there defending it on the front line after making such a statement.

7

u/proboscislounge 5d ago

Why the hell should anyone be on the frontline defending Ukraine? Why can't Russians sort their own shit out, and stop being a dysfunctional, emotionally broken nation of degenerates? Why should Russia be anyone's problem but the Russians'?

3

u/SA1DEN 5d ago

Why should Russia be anyone's problem but the Russians'?

Well, it clearly is to you.

Let me ask you this: what the fuck is going on in your brain that makes you think that I, a young Russian, must fight the regime in some way that I know will result in me losing my life (which, you know, is the most valuable thing in the Universe for me, just like your life is the most valuable thing in the Universe for you) or my freedom just because the government of my country (which I don't support) is doing undeniably terrible things?

Also, don't you think it's unfair and insulting to think that all citizens of a certain country are the same and call them dysfunctional degenerates? You know that a person doesn't choose where he wants to be born, yet people are different and many people who were born in Russia are against the war and Putin's regime?

5

u/Shake_Speare_ 5d ago

Well, if you believe you're not capable of fighting the regime in a way that doesn't cost you your life, no doubt you're right that you shouldn't be. Instead, it's far safer to carry on wasting your life living under thieves who stole your future before you even really had one. It's hard to risk a backbone if you never had one in the first place.

2

u/Latter-Telephone7263 5d ago

Also note that this dude is actively excusing russians here. So he can "fight for his people's rights" just not when it actually matters. It's quite ironic lol

1

u/Ok_Leopard8348 5d ago

oh, may i ask, you prolly fought for you future if you can so surely talk about that? and you definitely also count that dude just increase his time in prison, for each message he send to explain smth to such a cretin like you if he somehow gonna get inspected by police. Are you?

0

u/SA1DEN 5d ago

Well, if you believe you're not capable of fighting the regime in a way that doesn't cost you your life, no doubt you're right that you shouldn't be.

Do you live in Russia? I do, and I probably know more about the current political situation in Russia than you do.

Still, I am interested to hear what ways of fighting the regime without risking one's life or freedom there are in modern-day Russia that you know of there are. Enlighten me.

5

u/qwadrat1k 5d ago

People suggest tax evasion, sabotaging and protests.

I argued that literally none of it would damage the state in any way

As long as many people continue to support the regime, there’s no point in trying to be a hero.

u/skisemekarafla 5d ago

Same shit in Greece.

Some greeks deadass believe that the russians will invade Turkey and hand us over Istanbul... (its a supposed prophecy by a greek saint named Paisios - needless to say I consider all of this BS and I am an atheist as well)

Like our economy is going down the drain but these mfs dream of getting a city that has as much population as the entirety of Greece lol.

Also I really dislike these expansionist and imperialist ideas right wingers have.

Yeah serbs and greeks like to suck the Z but at least as much as I dislike our PM he isnt a russian meatrider (he is an Israeli one but anyways).

1

Why go to Serbia, knowing they are friendly with Russia? These white-blue-white clowns and common sense don't go hand in hand.

1

u/deaddyfreddy 5d ago

Serbia is generally not friendly with Russia. It tries to balance between multiple countries/blocks. For example, they sell ammo to Ukraine, they have a protection program for refugees, and Zelensky visited Belgrade recently.

These white-blue-white clowns

I agree with this part, though. The problem is these "WBW clowns" are mostly late millennials/zoomers, who grew up in the independent Russian Federation, and they somehow believe in the "Beautiful Russia of the Future" because they don't have and have never had another identity.

1

u/Sharp_Abies1355 5d ago

Because not so many countries supporting legal russian immigration with excluding "stan" in country name. Also language slavic group learning not so difficult. Eah exist some problems like " false friend words" but it really easy.

1

u/anycept Banned for spreading disinformation 5d ago

I don't know about that. With their violent tendencies, they'd find out how western riot police works really fast, really hard, and no one would speak for them on a global stage. No one likes assholes anywhere.

1

u/Low_Artist4569 5d ago

Do you understand that in Russia, you can go to jail for 12 years if your neighbors overhear your conversation with your wife? And i dont think you understand, but most of the russians that escape russia, dont do that because they support russia

1

u/anycept Banned for spreading disinformation 5d ago

Yeah, no. That's not how things work these days in Russia. No one cares what you talk about in private. Russian borders are open and everyone that "escaped", did so with a passport in hand through legal border checks. No one gave a sh*t where they go and why.

These clowns had their clown reasons to leave that exists only in their imagination. Go spread your little silly rumors someplace else.

1

u/Low_Artist4569 5d ago

Dude im russian myself. I hope i know what im talking about. People are afraid to talk. And borders are starting to close too. People have went to jail for conversations

u/My_nick_is_occupied 4d ago

1

u/Sergey_Moscow 5d ago

Because its almost Europe (much more europe than ruzzia) and they dont ask visa from russian

1

u/Filip7237 5d ago

As far as I know, it is because Serbia strikes the perfect balance of relations with russia (for anti-putin russian expats). As in, it is friendly *enough* with russia, so that they can actually enter visa free (and generally, at all, there are flights), but also, distant just enough so that the russian military and / or police can not actually get them there. It's a halfway point on the way towards the west and freedom they're striving for.

1

u/anycept Banned for spreading disinformation 5d ago

Yeah, well, now local police can get them, because these types typically carry their trouble with the law across the borders.

1

u/Filip7237 5d ago

Well, various things happen, especially in difficult times. Statistically though, in a population of such a size, you will get all types of people. What I do know for a fact though is that, if faced with a similar situation (having the choice between being forced into a brutal, agressor-army as meat-grinder, or just running for my life), I would probably choose the latter too. And as things stand today, logistically, Serbia and Georgia are the viable ways, that simply *can* work for that purpose, in a purely technical analysis.

As far as I am concerned, recieving a summons to an army mobilization center of an army which is actively waging war against another state is exactly this. It is the russian military trying to advance *into* Ukraine, not the other way around. It is the russian troops who are present in hundreds of thousands on what is internationally recognized to be Ukraine (by russia as well in 1991 and 1994!), not the other way around, and it is generally the russian side who is on the offensive (which is historically always the side with more casualities) into heavily fortified areas, with drones roaming overhead. People die left and right there, on both sides, all the time. This is what a meat grinder is. Going there, you know for a fact there is a big, big chance of you never coming back alive. And people tend to have what you call the self-preservation instinct. Most do want to stay alive. And the way you stay alive is by staying away from bullets, shrapnel and drones with explosives attached.

Because we are the only ones who actually let them come and live peacefully.

3

u/deaddyfreddy 5d ago

Because we are the only ones who actually let them come and live peacefully.

It's almost impossible to get a Serbian passport for a Russian citizen these days, unless they are from the mafia/FSB/billionaires. My friends moved to the "Russophobic" Spain mostly because of that, the irony is that it's much easier to naturalize there. They liked Serbia very much, learned the language, tried to integrate into local society, and so on.

People from the Russian Federation go to Serbia because:

  • it's visa-free

  • there are still direct flights

  • Their companies moved to Serbia

  • it's a bit easier to learn the language (compared to non-Slavic ones), and even if they don't - in Belgrade and other big cities, English fluency is pretty high.

there is an extremely easy path to residency via opening a business, buying property, or being sponsored by your company.

Sure, but many countries provide digital nomad visas, so it's not that complex either. As I said, my friends moved to friends, got the nomad visa, and are waiting for their residence permit.

After all, according to official stats, about 1.5M Russian citizens live in the EU these days.

a matter of time (8 years) to naturalization.

According to the law, it's 3 years now.

https://www.mfa.gov.rs/en/citizens/services/citizenship

that you had registered permanent residence in the territory of the Republic of Serbia for at least three years without interruption before submitting the application;

Sounds cool, isn't it?

The problem is, it's kind of on hold right now. There are no precise numbers, but according to official stats, in 2025 Swedish citizens got 51 Serbian passports. The Russian Federation wasn't even mentioned separately, so the number is even lower. The funniest part is that most of these didn't get them by naturalization but for "serving the national interest of Serbia." So - FSB, Mafia, Sport, Investments, etc.

there is no income threshold or property value minimum in serbia

Sure, but I think it was about €2500 per month for a single person, which is absolutely doable for people in IT.

in spain i think its 10 years.

Correct. But it's just 5 years for refugees and 1 year(!) via marriage.

considering this mass wave of russian immigration didnt happen until 2022, its not really a shocker that there isnt a large number of naturalized russian citizens yet since it takes 6 years.

I have friends who moved to Serbia before 2020, and as I remember, most of those who got the passport got it via marriage. There are people who have lived there since 2016 or so, and still haven't got it. So, that is the main issue - Serbia is a bit unpredictable in this regard.

just that serbia is by no stretch a bad option.

absolutely

It's really interesting because we expected Russians to be Russians.

But those who arrived in our country don't look like Russians at all.

All of them look like some Western liberal progressive people that just happen to talk Russian.

So let's just say that we are not particularly happy having 200.000+ of this kind of Russians staying here
