Im new. Where do I begin?

Hello. Ive always heard about and watched YouTube videos of geocaching. I seem to understand the concept. Pretty straight forward. But what platform do I use? I think last time I looked its an app i had to pay for?

Thanks

You can use the Geocaching app and website for free. There's just a premium subscription tier that gives you access to more caches.

Very easy hobby to get into, you just need a working smartphone. See if there are any caches near you and go for it.

Set up your login at the Geocaching website, then download the official app and log in. Search the map for caches near you and take a pen with you. When you find your first cache, write your user name and the date on the log sheet. Hide it back just the way you found it.

Welcome to your new obsession. 😊🗺️

get c:geo on android or cachly on iOS (i've heard here, I use android) is good on apple even though its one time purchase of a few bucks
just try to find easy rated (id say 2,5 max on both difficulty and terrain) traditional (green) cache and go find it. once you feel comfortable with the concept, go for other cache types.

beware tho, this is very addicting

This. I found the official app insanely difficult to use, and it will limit what you can find to park and grabs. Get C:Geo if you've an android

I use the free app, I don't pay for it. It means you can't find some 'special' caches, but there are plenty of others out there.

To get started, download the official app at geocaching app, sign up and go find caches.

The official app, even with its limitations, is great for getting started.

If you enjoy caching, then it's worth looking into other apls with expanded features, like c-geo (Android) or cachly (iOS).

Try the official app for a few weeks and if you like the game I encourage you to get the 1 or 3 month subscription (depending on what's available in your area) to try if you really like it.

There are enough free caches on the official app to see what the game is about and to know if you're willing to pay the price of about a cup of coffee a month for a game that gives you hours of fun every month.

Spend some time at the website (preferably on a desktop/laptop computer). www.geocaching.com

I find it more fun to go with a friend. More eyes will hopefully help as a newbie.

Find an event near you and make some caching friends, most of us are friendly. Go on adventures with them, if possible. Don't get frustrated if you can't find one, caches can be sneaky hiders. Finally, have fun. It's just a game.

Register on geocaching.com and download the cgeo app. It's free and better than the official app. Sign in there and then simply start.

Look for a traditional cache near you with low difficulty and terrain ranking as well as recent find logs.

And don't forget to bring a pen that writes on possibly damp paper.
