Discussion Ryan Murphy Says He ‘Just Finished the Script’ for a ‘Glee’ Reboot and Has Spoken to the Original Cast: ‘They All Were Very Enthusiastic’

Given how some of them have expressed their desire to leave Glee in the past. This would be shocking

u/hybehorre The Troubletones 24d ago
no fr i cannot believe that they all are excited - my guess would be anyone who has been involved in one of ryan’s project post glee are excited and the rest would not agree to being involved lol

u/sighcantthinkofaname 24d ago
Imo it's vague on purpose. Saying they're all excited isn't say in they all want to participate. They could've just been like "Oh that's fun! I hope it goes well for you"
And I think they're doing that because articles like this are often put out to gage public opinion. If a lot of people react to it in a positive way that makes it seem like a more worthwhile investment. Mentioning past castmembers is a surefire way to get more engagement.
32
u/Silversparkles93 24d ago
I don’t think it would be that shocking. Ryan Murphy’s name still has huge pull. If someoneone of the cast members wanted a career boost I can totally see them being down.

It can be difficult to get roles after a show like Glee where you become so typecasted
3
u/JustDay1788 23d ago
It's a easy cheque and a lot has happened since Glee ended Ryan pays well lol
A lot of OG cast members probably want the cheque lol
2
u/DrogoOmega 23d ago
Yeah but they’d be paid to be on a tv show for 8-12 episodes at least. A bigger pay check than they might be getting now.

u/mmpogee 24d ago
When he said 10 of the original cast members, does he meant:
- Matthew
- Jane
- Lea
- Darren
- Jenna
- Kevin
- Heather
- Harry
- Chord
- Becca
Because I don't think Amber, Chris, and Diana are ever coming back.

u/thrcwcwcy 24d ago
i could maybe see amber? i believe she’s going to be at glee con so maybe she’s back in it
16
u/Candid-Cake4410 23d ago
Amber was one of the most vocal in saying that she would never be part of a reboot. Everyone can change their mind, but I’d be surprised if she were in it.
6
u/koolforkatskatskats Oral Intensity 23d ago
I mean Jessica Lange also said she would absolutely never do AHS again.
But money talks

2
u/KittyBabe396978 23d ago
It’ll only work imo if we get brand new cast. The only people I’d let them bring back is Sue and Mr Schue, but that it’s. What would be even better is if we just got a whole different school, city, town, etc, just as long as it has glee’s aspects.

I’m seeing a lot of people putting Darren in that list, but I wouldn’t be too sure of it. He’s spoken before on how he’s not sure it would work nowadays, and how theatre is what works the best for him and his young family right now
I also can understand if he wants to avoid a repeat of what his initial experience was like in regards to crazy fans. His wife was treated horribly, and now that they have kids, I could see Darren not wanting to step back into the madness
26
u/bereitsvergessen 23d ago
Darren has been consistently unenthusiastic whenever asked about a Glee reboot, but I don't think he would say no if it did happen (at least in a limited capacity, not a full potentially multi-year commitment). For one thing because I don't think he wants to burn any bridges with Ryan, but also because he's very nostalgic and couldn't stay away if a bunch of other cast members returned.
3
u/azaharinflames 22d ago
I can see him returning for a cameo or as a guest star for 1-2 eps max. But I’ve seen some people (not in this comment but in general) theorizing he could even be a teacher at McKinley, and I think that’s too far. Something short and sweet I could definitely see
40
u/HoraceHorrible The Warblers 24d ago
Diana was with Lea and Darren in IG less than 2 years ago. Chris liked Darren's post in IG this week (they also posted a photo a year ago or so). I don't think just because Amber has a problem with Lea (which is valid) is enough to keep them all away from a Glee reboot. If we're talking about special guests and not regulars, I think most of them, if not all, are possible.
2
u/Beccabee01 19d ago
just because they still get on with their ex-coworkers or like their social media posts doesn't mean they want to return to glee or have a good relationship with ryan murphy. diana had a very rocky relationship with ryan and co which led to her leaving the show after season 3. she came back for a couple guest appearances while the show was airing but i don't think it fits with who she is now to return, especially if she still has issues with the creators. amber has expressed on multiple occasions she would not ever return to glee. its not just the issue with lea, its the fact that no one ever stood up for her when she was going through the racism and poor treatment she received on the show. as for chris, he's said he doesn't want to act anymore. he's happy as an author. and none of the three need the paycheque that would have them putting aside their reservations.
18
u/marvelftm 24d ago
I just watched a video of Darren talking about how he doesn’t think it would work nowadays so he wasn’t sure about a reboot. Maybe reading a script changed his mind who knows
14
u/Low-Tennis-1787 24d ago
i honestly kinda feel like heather wont be back for the reboot because of naya. i could be wrong but who knows
2
5
u/Old_Perception_7335 23d ago
i personally like the idea of Rachel leading the new directions again, maybe will is principal? idk about the rest my idea wasn't like a whole reunion where ALL of them are back because tbh that doesn't make like the most sense to me. maybe as guest stars?
4
u/randomfrog81 trouty mouth 23d ago
i personally don't count chord, darren or becca as original cast. i honestly don't know what ryan murphy is talking about but he's going to do whatever makes him money
5
u/BrotherofGenji 23d ago
Isn't Lea like, super busy with Broadway? I remember her doing Funny Girl (wtf, art imitates life much?) and then something else. Does she even have time?
Diana I am not sure if she would or not, I mean she's doing Paris life last I remembered and honestly, that's epic.
Amber I know didn't like working with Lea, and I'm not sure why Chris wouldn't come back tbh. Didn't he used to be a big Ryan Murphy fan and thats why he even auditioned originally for the role of Artie in the first place? Or is he focusing on just writing now?
17
u/AllTheThingsSheSays 23d ago
Lea did Funny Girl, and was one of the leads in Chess this year but isn't currently on Broadway.
Chris has returned to acting this year, but still focusses more on his writing. I'd be very surprised if he returns, I know he's still friends with the cast but he doesn't seem all too fond of Glee itself, tbh.
6
u/ellewoods_obsessed 23d ago
Lea ended a run in Chess in June of this year. She is guest starring in something on CBS this season I believe. She did say she wants to keep doing theater, but said she would follow Ryan with a reboot maybe. Idk since she is in NYC if she would fully relocate.
2
u/Impressive-Gene-7895 23d ago
She is not on Broadway now. The plat finished months ago.
2
u/BrotherofGenji 23d ago
I'm very behind, then.
IDK why but for some reason I thought she'd be doing more Broadway projects after Chess. Guess she's taking a break?
2
u/ellewoods_obsessed 23d ago
She was always taking the summer off/her run in Chess was ending in the end of June 2026. She is doing something on TV this fall and then a concert with Aaron Tveit in November. I don’t feel like it’s too long of a gap bc it sometimes just depends on what shows are running/planned.

No way is Chris Colfer coming back for a reboot, and Naya's no longer with us. I have no reason to watch this without Kurt and Santana.
44
u/Mythicali-Gleek 206: The room where it happens. 24d ago
Especially since they wouldn't just simply not be there. Storylines would have to be written around them not being there.
I don't want Santana or Kurt to be written as dead or divorced and estranged or something depressing like that.I rather leave the show as it ended and imagine all the characters in their fictional universe continued to live their best lives. As of right now, even though Naya's dead, Santana is alive. She probably won't be if they write a reboot.
10
u/Accomplished-Hawk414 23d ago
But i am very curious to see how they adress Santana not being there. And if Brittany is there, what happened to her wife? It better not have anything to do with Naya's real life death, cause that would be insensitive and Ryan Murphy is not a very sensible person.
6
u/AtomicWhiskers 23d ago
Im very out of the loop, is there a reason Chris Colfer wouldnt come back for a reboot?
38
u/Mythicali-Gleek 206: The room where it happens. 23d ago
From what I've seen in interviews, Chris tends to move past the topic of returning to Glee rather quickly, without ever going into details.
However he has talked about his frustrations with the show separately: including
literally-psychotic fans threatening his (and Darren's) real life spouses.
Developing agoraphobia because of such fans.
Said the show was very exhausting and demanding between rehearsing and actually filming etc.
He definitely doesn't wanna work with Lea again.
And after the writers used Naya's mouth to insult the actor for an hour straight under the guise of it just being a classic Santana rant to Kurt (it was definitely a Ryan rant to Chris), I can't imagine he has much desire to work with Ryan or any of the showrunners again.9
u/AtomicWhiskers 23d ago
Thanks for your reply. I never noticed the disrespect to Chris under the guise of Santana just doing her thing. After all that its definitely understandable he wouldn’t want to return.
21
u/Mythicali-Gleek 206: The room where it happens. 23d ago
Yeah, Naya talked about the rant in her book, I believe. Said it took about an hour to get it right and it was a miserable hour for both her & Chris. If the rant would've remained about the character it'd been fine enough, but the rant was literally just about his voice/appearance pretty much. That's nothing to do with Kurt that's purely how he sees Chris, and the fact that he used one of his actors, one that was friends with Chris no less... is just terrible. (Could be wrong, I can't ever stand to watch the scene again, but I think Chris is literally holding back tears at the end it)
As much as I love Kurt and would LOVE to see the return of him, I do not blame Chris (or any cast member) for not wanting to ever step foot back into that world again.
6
u/DanaOats3 22d ago
Yeah, I don’t think the reboot would be that great without Kurt Hummel. I also don’t even want to hope Chris Colfer will do the reboot because it would probably be a bad experience for him. What a shame.

u/PhoebeBob 24d ago
In the interview he said he has spoken to 10 original cast members who were enthusiastic, but haven't seen a script. I wonder who the 10 are?!
6
u/GroundbreakingLie245 23d ago
My guess would probably be Matthew, Lea, Jane, Chord, Dianna, Kevin, Jenna, Heather, Darren and maybe Harry or Amber. It’s worth noting tho that none of those are confirmed commitments to reprise their roles, it could be some of them offering creative input or just “sounds good, hope it goes well for you” kind of responses. I’m more of the view that not many of them will actually come back though, of that group only Lea and Dianna seemed somewhat interested when they were questioning about it with the others either likely not coming back for personal reasons (Chris, Heather, Amber etc) or other career commitments (Darren). Ig we’ll have to wait and see though

I don’t believe that for a second, and I certainly don’t think Heather would come back for obvious reasons

Me too. Anytime it gets even slightly suggested I feel excitement.
And if it comes along and doesn't work, so what? The original is still there unaffected
6
3
u/nougatbits-on-crack 23d ago
I don't really know what "reboot" means in this case... for me, I can only see it work, if it's completely new characters and actors (like a new glee club at McKinley) and then the old actors could appear in guest roles and make special appearances. I can see the potential of that, I would be so excited to see which new songs they would cover. But reheating the old glee nachos is impossible. The story is over.
3
u/Opening_Ear3615 23d ago
For some reason people started calling "reboot" a reunion, sequel, whatever.
A reboot would be to discard the original show and doing Glee all over again (with different characters/plot and heavy deviations, just the same "premise", otherwise it would be a "remake".
But if he is talking about the original cast, this is most likely a new season/ limited season/ reunion, not a reboot or a remake.
10
u/NervousGalaxy 24d ago
Still think if they're ever gonna do more it should be a completely new cast and maybe even a different school/town. Have references to where the OG cast are now since so many of them entered the entertainment industry, maybe a cameo or three, and that's it.
6
7
u/sighcantthinkofaname 24d ago
Interesting...
It would still need to be picked up by someone. I'm not going to hold my breath until they actually film it. But this is a big step.
8
u/wonkow 24d ago
The only way I can see this working with anyone from the original cast is Schue is retiring and one of them decides they're going to take over for him with a new group of weird kids who break out into song.
1
u/DanaOats3 22d ago
Please not Rachel. I would love a glee where she’s a side character as best. Shudder.
2
u/wonkow 22d ago
I was thinking Blaine actually. His character mentioned maybe wanting to be a teacher once. You could even bring Sue Sylvester in by making Robin on of the new group of outcast kids and making a Sue a psycho stage mother.

u/AlarmingPeace3460 I thought I smelled failure 24d ago
The only way I can see this working, though, is if it barely involves any if the old cast. It has to feel like season 1 with fresh faces, instead of just taking all of the alums and giving them pointless stories.

u/Substantial_Prune296 24d ago
In the article "I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members." Who are the 10?

u/Ok-Opossum-1979 23d ago
It is very possible that this includes the actors who played Howard Bamboo, Sandy Ryerson, and Teri’s sister Kendra.
5
u/Lucas_Yohhh 24d ago
I think this will be like a 4 episodes short season, like Malcolm in the Middle and Gilmore Girls had. Could be fun.
If it's sucessuful, a new show with new characters could be good.
7
u/Main_Ant653 24d ago
I feel like they could go either way, i’d be happy with a 4 episode deal if they got the OG cast in there. They might be more likely to say yes if its a short commitment.
3
u/AllTheThingsSheSays 23d ago
A limited reunion season could work, maybe some kind of High School Reuinion event. They could always say Santana was busy and could make it.

Glee had a very big cast throughout it's entire run, I gotta wonder who the the "original 10" are because I doubt it's any of the ones who have time and time again expressed NOT wanting to ever reprise their Glee roles. (AKA: the members we would love to see most)
If this happens.. it's gonna be a shitshow... and not a charming shitshow like the original.. just a shitshow.

Without Naya, I don’t want it. It’s unfortunate enough that we’ll never hear her voice again, I couldn’t take her being written off.
4
u/biracialesbian 23d ago
I don’t want a glee reboot without naya, it’s not the same without santana
7
u/Opening_Ear3615 23d ago
Moreover, while Naya has sadly passed away, Santana is still very much alive and well in the Glee universe. I don't what is worse, them addressing it in the reboot, them completely ignoring her or them saying shit like "Santana is out doing a commercial or whatever".
2
u/Accomplished-Hawk414 23d ago
They could do a very brief sibling cast (Naya's sister) just like they did with the Walker brothers for Fast and Furious. A shot of Brittany and Santana from far away laughing and holding hands. I don't need to see more because we can't have more. But if they choose to keep Santana alive, they can just do that and let it go.
1
u/biracialesbian 23d ago
heather morris would never agree to that, she would just not show up all together. brittana was hemo and naya no one can replace her

u/GroundbreakingLie245 24d ago
The thing is, is this a “reboot” as in a new cast retelling the story? (ABSOLUTELY SHOULD NOT HAPPEN) or the old cast coming back to make an additional season set 11 years later?
Either way I’m really sceptical tbh, I echo what Amber said in a recent interview, glee lost cast mates during its runtime and has now lost even more in the post glee era. How would they deal with a new Finn in a reboot? Does he still pass in S5 or do we get a finchel ending? If it’s set in the current day how do we deal with Santana and Puck given Naya and Mark’s passings respectively?
If Ryan wants to do this I feel he needs to be way more open about these major questions save people watch this expecting something completely different.

The 10 are definitely
Lea
Matthew
Jane

Perhaps Darren? Ryan has got his favourites.
I think Dianna too! I think she wouldn’t be opposed to working with him again. Even as a guest star because she worked with him on the Doctor Odyssey a couple of years ago.
I see Jenna not saying no. She stayed for so long despite her character being treated so badly.
And Harry Shum. He did mention DWTS in the interview.
I don’t see Amber, Heather, Kevin and Chris coming back. At least not in the same episode as Lea.
6
u/GroundbreakingLie245 23d ago
I broadly agree, I only think Darren comes back though if a majority of the old cast does too. He’s spoken before about how he’s not optimistic about a reboot and how broadway is basically working great for him rn with his family but ig a good script could change anything. I think Kevin would come back just not as Artie, if they offered him something in creative input i think it’d be hard for him to decline.

u/Early_Necessary1000 23d ago
There was a blind item released last month (so obviously not guaranteed to be accurate) that said it was coming and was NYADA based with Leah as a series regular. And while I'm still firmly in the camp of Leave It Alone We Don't Need This, there could be way worse angles to take with it. We'd get a new cast with one main returning character and lots of surprise cameos from everyone else and with it being set in college it would be different enough from the original that it wouldn't feel like a sequel and just another story set in the same universe. And it kinda writes itself, honestly, it's 18 years after the first season so it's timed perfectly for Beth to be starting college...
1
u/kerryfinchelhillary Finchel Supremacy 23d ago
Oh God no. If you do it, just do it with a similar plot with a completely different cast. They completely destroyed everything good about the show and I don't see how it can be fixed.

Really giant sigh.
We didn't need a glee reboot - Naya and Cory are gone and Glee could only really exist the way it did in the early 2010s when it aired. With that being said - I guess this could be good for a younger generation, but nothing will beat the original. I don't see how they can capture the essence of the first 3-4 seasons again, and I don't think it will be as much of a cultural phenomenon as it was.
Also, a majority of the fans don't even want a reboot, so...

Commented on the other post, but i would like if the student characters could play their actors' actual age now -- most are 35-45 atm. My take is Santana got her happy ending. People don’t realize how rare it is for a lesbian character to get a happy ending. Why even go there? Leave it alone. Santana and Brittany are happily married rn. Leave it alone.
Santana Lopez helped so many people come to terms with who they are, myself included. She continues to help people. She should continue to help people who discover the show. It’s so much bigger than a story. Leave it alone.
