Discussion Y‘all I can‘t do this shit anymore

Post image

First of who does this person think they are, going to a goth concert with these stupid meta glasses, and why does Twin Tribes seem to endorse them? I know they‘ve used AI art before but seriously this is a new low, even for them

Someone in their team saw a fan video of the band with decent audio quality, muttered “oh, sick” and hit the share button. I doubt they knew which camera it was filmed on.

u/RoseandNightshade Nonbinary (They/Them) Deathrock Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

No no, nuanced takes are not allowed on Reddit /s. In all seriousness though, this is likely probably what happened, They're big enough these days to at least employ a team, even if it's a small team.

edit: To add on, I've definitely been guilty of sharing stuff without checking the description to see what it might be filmed on, in the past. I've immediately unshared in those instances, but still it's definitely happened.

36

u/deciawix Jul 27 '26

Right like, they repost concert videos from literally EVERYBODY that tags them pretty much. They reposted mine ffs

u/1-1creature Jul 27 '26

Thank you for having a brain.

2

u/Frequent_Assistance9 Jul 28 '26

this has happened to @Impact as well, a fairly liberal/anti-ai news account, i don’t remember exactly what happened but bc they used a resource created from the meta glasses for something, the post had the meta glasses flair to it, even though they have been against the use of these glasses in recent past.

People: can we add just a little fucking nuance to this before you all jump on the crucifixion train and decide that they've always been evil....

They shared, amongst a whole bunch of others, one story that was filmed by a fan with meta glasses.

They didn't film it themselves. They were tagged, and shared it to their own story, like they do after pretty much every show, with a wide variety of fan stories.

I know the kids these days love to jump on anything, but like... come on. They almost certainly didn't notice. It was one story amongst about 10, and was recorded by a fan.

Get a grip people.

Edit to respond to this also:

I know they've used Al art before but seriously this is a new low, even for them

They (or their record label) used an AI animated gif ONCE, as an image promoting Monolith. People pointed out that it was not cool. They removed it and haven't used AI since. What would you have them do? They naively used an emerging tech, that at that point it wasn't clear how harmful it was, in one image, and when it was pointed out that it might not be cool they've clearly never done it again.

I hate AI, I hate the fucking perv glasses but trying to tear down a band because they shared a fan story is pathetic.

u/SanguinaryImpetus Jul 27 '26

Kinda seems like a lot of these people didn't like their music to begin with. An opportunity to attack a band whose work you already didn't like is too good to pass up sometimes

35

u/low_flying_aircraft Goth Jul 27 '26

It's exactly that. They're pretty big, and they're popular, and thus there is also a continuous contingent on here that wants to whine about how terrible they are, because of that.

21

u/sadbat-throwaway Darkwave, Coldwave, Deathrock, Goth Rock, Post-Punk Jul 27 '26

So many people would benefit from seeing things through the eyes of a newcomer again. I'm relatively new and been intentionally exploring and branching out in goth genres, I've most definitely turned away from plenty of bands upon first listening. Some I will never entertain again for certain but others I'm willing to give a second chance because I recognize some things are an acquired taste. For someone who's not completely fatigued on the sheer amount of Darkwave acts yet, Twin Tribes can be amazing. The first time I heard "The River" was magical. I don't even like their entire body of work, but there are things to appreciate especially if you haven't "seen it all before."

24

u/deciawix Jul 27 '26

Yes there’s so many people that love to hate on twin tribes here because they want to seem different.
I also think it’s really funny how people always say support POC goth bands, but then now since twin tribes has become more popular, now people want to shit on them, call them bland darkwave and look for any reason to tear them down.

1

u/ecthelion-elessedil Aug 12 '26

I like their music, but I m kind of confused because if they share it even if they didn’t take it themselves it still mean that they accept the technology, and intentionally or not, as people with influence, they are also advertising it.

17

u/lee_knight_ Darkwaver Jul 27 '26

Thank you. I'm so sick of visiting this sub and seeing all of this insane hatred and dogpiling. I feel like people don't even try to research/analyze these situations anymore. Selofan was in a pretty nuanced situation involving AI a few weeks ago, and that thread got so nasty.

13

u/nauraug Darkwaver Jul 28 '26

This sub has gotten so absurd. A band can't even repost a fan video without acting like they shot their dog.

This outrage is purely performative. Joel and Luis are two really nice dudes who love interacting with their fans and reposted a video of a performance. Notice how nobody seems to care that they run an Instagram (a Meta platform--which I bet everyone here has), but that a video was taken with a Meta product... which by the way, is what Instagam is.

Ya'll need to touch some grass and spare your energy for actual problems.

5

u/dizzira_blackrose Jul 28 '26

This was my exact thought process, too. I wouldn't be surprised if it neglected to tell them it was from Meta glasses, so they had no idea in the first place.

And the fact they're still being shamed for using AI once is a pretty good example of the damage AI does to artists. It's a stain on their reputation that doesn't need to be there anymore. They haven't used it since, so why are they still being attacked for it? I don't get it. It's like growth doesn't exist anymore or something?

407

u/Several_Ad_1322 Jul 27 '26

The biggest thing about being goth is being anti-establishments and control. A lot of goth bands have missed the point that the very being of being goth is music that speaks out

115

u/Lady_Calista Jul 27 '26

Its a consequence of the success of goth as a subculture that we were absorbed into the framework of capitalism, had our abrasive elements to the system stripped out, and then sold back to the masses as a product. Upsetting but sadly difficult to avoid under the economic and social structure we live in.

46

u/Occultist_Kat Jul 27 '26

Yea, this is a sentiment I've reflected myself over the years. Any subculture that becomes popular is going to have it's values washed out in favor of its aesthetics and people will attach whatever idealogy they want to it. And if you disagree, they just call you a gatekeeper or whatever the fuck.

It's unfortunate because I used to feel like if I saw anyone dressed the way I was or listening to the music I was listening to, I naively assumed we could get along and be friends. But then I found out how many of these people just look the part and that's about it. I grew up going to a country school surrounded by small towns of mostly conservative people and was always really happy to see someone I thought I may finally relate to, but was quickly disappointed by the reality of the situation.

8

u/NashvilleSoundMixer Jul 27 '26

What a perfectly succinct and descriptive way of explaining this. Well done!

162

u/wrpnt Jul 27 '26

What I hate is that there’s this argument online made by “conservative goths” interpreting the anti-establishment nature of goth to be “anti-woke” because they say that mainstream media is the establishment. When in reality we have literal fascists in our government which they somehow see no issue with. It’s so bizarre to me because goths are also anti-tradition, and there’s nothing more traditional than being conservative.

I dated an elder goth who turned out to be a trumper. It’s not just the newbies or casuals, sadly it’s an endemic issue amongst the entire population so there’s bound to be some in every community, including amongst goths.

Almost like people can just have their own opinions about things. I hate trump too but this policing of people’s independent thought in the alt community is just making these people run towards small c conservatism even faster because they perceive that their individual free thought is not attacked in those circles. Which is kinda ironic when you really think about it.

8

u/JobinTobingo Jul 28 '26

Nah sorry but when her opinion includes that Mexicans aren’t actually people, that they’re all illegally in the U.S., that they’re all rapists and criminals, and that they’re should be rounded up and executed - that’s well beyond a difference of opinion. That’s a psychopathic xenophobe and her opinion is not valid.

Tolerance of intolerance and hatred as a simple “difference of opinion” is how intolerance and hatred spreads unchecked - it’s how we got to where we are now. Sure, ostracizing and ridiculing them will make them feel like they’re “being attacked” since most of them seem to have a victim complex anyway, but the alternative is to make them feel like their opinion - one that is, in this particular case, pro-genocide - is valid and acceptable.

elder

I remember reading once that elder are either the goths that were part of the community when it all began, or those that are older than 40. Last year was my 40th birthday, and I've been wondering if that definition was correct, can I call myself an elder?

I was just about to say this lol. I’ve literally had people IRL argue with me that if goth is counter culture, and it’s becoming less socially acceptable to be a racist asshole (I would argue that that’s actually way too normalized but I digress), then being racist is okay bc it’s anti mainstream or whatever. Like. No. What in the edgy middle schooler logic is this? I wanted to shake them until the stupid fell out one ear

13

u/RanjhasDistress Jul 27 '26

It’s unfortunately a few things at once. Before he was disgraced, Harvey Weinstein was a prominent Clinton aide, used to disparage “Bernie bros” or other opponents of Clinton. But basically “liberal elite” can kind of be a real thing, it’s just that you can solve that with socialism and there’s a lot of money put into obscuring that fact

27

u/Octospyder Jul 27 '26

it's less "liberal elite" and more bourgeoisie. It's the club you ain't in that Carlin told us about.

8

u/MechanicStriking4666 Jul 27 '26

The funny thing is that the mainstream has always been conservative.

2

u/shez-bitchy Jul 29 '26

Yup they want to brand being conservative as "counter culture" now because its "more popular to be leftist". Which is suchhh terrible logic. They want to be oppressed. Reminds me of when white people start talking about how anti-white the world has become.

3

u/pit_of_despair666 Jul 28 '26

The majority of social media and TV networks are owned by right wing billionaires and most have been sliding to the right over the past few years. Also, the majority of Republicans are Christian conservatives who were calling us Satan for wearing black not too long ago.

The community is also at fault for this imo. If I was a part of a goth band and saw that my fans were buying "spooky" stuff from Walmart and Hot Topic, I'd probably feel comfortable about not staying true to the goth ideology.

Anyway, I'm just glad to see the community is still 30+ years later, still arguing about whats not goth enough. You all real ones and I'm not being sarcastic. This is as it was decades ago, and so it still is.

Problem is all the nefarious crap that can be done with them by unscrupulous people. Seems weird someone would wear them to a concert.

Those glasses scare me. I have no picture of myself posted anywhere on internet, im not comfortable with this. But I m not gender conforming, not in the way that is socially accepted, and my features were described as weird by the past, and I’ve always been scared about things like being recorded without consent and body shamed, bullied on the internet. It’s even worse that it’s hard to tell appart those glasses from normal glasses. Now anyone can record any strangers in total discretion. Instead of all this, we could have glasses that simply describe the environment to visually impaired people without the record option. Thats awful.

8

u/anotsonicebean Goth Jul 27 '26

The original story poster stated in their story that they didnt expect that they needed to hold up their meta glasses as high as they did to get a clip of the band. Thats not disability related. Just use a damn phone like everyone else

118

u/stvura Jul 27 '26

I hate to be that guy but I’ve never much cared for this band and stuff like this and using AI just seals the deal. Their music, like so many bands these days, is just so incredibly uninspired, very much like paint-by-numbers. So many goth bands these days seem to deliberately aspire to this pre-established archetype of what goth bands “should” sound like instead of trying to do their own thing.

10

u/Fratzenfresse Jul 27 '26

I think monolith is pretty catchy but apart from that they are pretty boring

18

u/SwampGoff Jul 27 '26

They’re just another one of many in the “dorkwave” slop genre, they were nothing special..just like the rest of them.

0

u/NoiseIsTheCure Jul 27 '26

Not sure if I've heard of this group before just because Twin Tribes is an incredibly generic name. Could easily be a band that makes stomp clap hey music. I looked up their song Monolith since it was mentioned in a few comments. I have to agree with you that it's slop. It's just base level synth wave with reverbed out vocals, it's like a watered down Sisters of Mercy rip.

-2

u/SwampGoff Jul 27 '26

Exactly, same things goes for the likes of Drab Majesty, Harsh Symmetry and Ultra Sunn

-3

u/DisastrousDot7961 Jul 27 '26

Their first album was pretty cool for the time, but yeah I don’t understand how they have millions and millions of listens on Spotify. When the hell did that happen?

16

u/SwampGoff Jul 27 '26

Because they’re a “safe” trend band, every dorkwave artist is. It’s become the safe genre for “goths” and the most palatable, because they don’t like anything with screechy edge and confrontational lyrics which is what goth has always been. It’s all down to commodity and wanting to be hip, it’s disgusting.

2

u/goopsie_daisy Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

I disagree with the generalization but Twin Ties are incredibly bland.

3

u/SwampGoff Jul 27 '26

Not really a generalisation if it’s true, which it is.

6

u/goopsie_daisy Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

I listen to plenty confrontational and subversive artists but that's not mandatory for every band otherwise we'd be saturated in homogenous try hard slop. She past away blew up at the same time. They're nowhere near as accessible and are old heads not "trying to be hip" or jumping on a bandwagon. Despite the minimal constraints and monotone vocals write memorable songs. Putting that band and every darkwave project in the same box as twin tribes or ultra sunn is weird to me.

3

u/SwampGoff Jul 27 '26

She Past Away is actually a good group. And it’s no secret how many bands that came after them ripped them off.

1

u/Corporate_Laughter Jul 28 '26

I won't lie it could probably be stronger. There are a few regular nights with varying attendance. Some good local bands but people only seem to want to come out to see the bigger acts and it can be difficult getting off the ground (speaking from experience). Still regular shows though and events with some regular attendees.

A few people are trying to get the scene into a stronger place and it's coming together bit by bit. Idk what the appetite is like though, whether attendance is spotty for some things bc there aren't many people in the scene, or no one knows about things happening in the scene, or they just don't really care unless there's a bigger draw than a local band or regular night. A few of us in local bands are planning future events and tend to look out for each other.

Tbh I've nothing to really compare it to because I've been a shut in for a couple decades and just fairly recently been pushing myself to get out there so kind of just going off what I hear

    • This also goes for bands whose members are known violators of this as we do not need to be giving our money to those with harmful ideologies, who want to take away the rights of minorities, POC, LGBTQ+, etc. Those we will absolutely and rightfully gatekeep from the subculture, you can see the bands subject to removal here.
  • Attack people on a personal level: No name-calling, derogatory terms, threats, or urge someone to self harm. Disagree with each other, but try and be civil about it. Reddit is for discussion, but if flaming wars or unnecessarily blame-games form, the mods may step in.

  • Troll: This isn't a 2009 4chan forum. We're fully grown adults with full-time careers and livelihoods and we don't have time for your childish bullshit.

  • If someone attacks you or someone, report it to us, don't engage them, or you may be punished as well.

You know they probably dont run their own IG account? Its a repost of a fans story, countless bands do this. This doesnt seem like any sort of endorsement of AI or meta glasses

1

u/DisastrousDot7961 Jul 27 '26

No they definitely do run their Instagram account

8

u/TheSkinoftheCypher Jul 27 '26

Ok so if true they used AI before. Maybe they didn't realize it was Meta glasses or maybe they did and do not get why it's an issue. Or they endorse it. Whichever, sure hold them accountable. But they're not the real enemy. Those are the current American government, Israeli government/military, Afghanistan Talibon, the general rise of pro-hate people feeling emboldened, big income disparities, anti-trans sentiment, continuation of various causes of global warming, etc. etc. I suggest reserving your energy for those things, not whether a band supports Meta glasses. They have a minuscule impact on the world. Fight the real enemy.

u/Hellebore-TheKnight Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

You can be aware of everything here and also question those who “seemingly” are supporting AI meta glasses , it says something about those you’re expected to fight with to oppose the real enemy when they themselves do not care about what the real enemy is shoving in our faces to keep us submissive to them, not on Twin Tribes alone (because that would be over blowing things) but generally these people are obstacles for the status quo. AI is already troublesome in art spaces and to the environment, even minuscule things are warranted to discuss on an interpersonal level as a community when more and more are AI posters being used to advertise goth nights. This is just the context at present that OP posted so we’re talking about it.

8

u/TheSkinoftheCypher Jul 27 '26

People are being vitriolic in their responses. I think it's wasted energy when they could be doing something else with that energy.

1

u/anotsonicebean Goth Jul 27 '26

The text from the original story poster states that they didnt expect to have to hold up the meta glasses so high to get a clip of the band playing

2

u/YesHunty Jul 27 '26

Damn that’s really annoying

2

u/KMFCM Jul 27 '26

.....when did they use AI art?

2

u/anotsonicebean Goth Jul 27 '26

Recent album covers

-1

u/anotsonicebean Goth Jul 27 '26

As far a i know yes, and a lot of their promotional material on both tiktok and instagram are ai videos

2

u/genesis-loveless ten minutes of droning synths with a british man eating the mic Jul 27 '26

literally right as I'm listening to them what sick joke is this </3

2

u/Some_Horror_759 Jul 27 '26

I know Instagram has had cases where they say that an account is part of their (insert bullshit AI slop) app and they just.. aren't, so maybe its that case? Not a TT listener lol I have no idea how they work but still

6

u/Pixelife_76 Jul 27 '26

Because they got paid...

6

u/KaliFlesh Post-Punk, Goth Rock, Deathrock Jul 27 '26

Can someone explain to me the problem here? Cuz I don't see how anyone can look at meta glasses and automatically think that they must be using it to be creepy. I've seen a lot less problematic uses for this technology.

6

u/Pspreviewer100 Jul 27 '26

Yeah it's literally primarily used to film video which is cool. People gotta bitch about something always, that's about it.

2

u/ecthelion-elessedil Aug 12 '26

That’s the issue though ? When someone takes a video with a phone for example, people who don’t want to appear on it can see it and move away. Now with this technology anyone can record anybody in total discretion, undetected. Instead we could have glasses that describe environment to visually impaired people, without the recording feature. But here we are.

u/ayuisjustagirl Goth Jul 28 '26

Call me a purist, I only listen to the old shit nowadays because no one knows how to be original, artistic, and subversive anymore.

3

u/ParzivalCodex Jul 28 '26

This… I mean, I listen to SOME new stuff, but I’m extremely selective.

0

u/ayuisjustagirl Goth Jul 28 '26

Twin. My “new” stuff is usually just me exploring genres from the same time or era. I pretty much only listen to gothic rock/post-punk and 90’s visual kei, so anything “new” is a different artist or a similar genre. You never really run out of good, old music.

4

u/sadbat-throwaway Darkwave, Coldwave, Deathrock, Goth Rock, Post-Punk Jul 28 '26

I think my biggest problem with this thread is: you don't need a moral justification for why you dislike a specific artist or band. It's okay, you can simply just not like them. People who seek moral justifications for why they don't like subjective experiences of art are trying to find a way their dislike of the art can make them superior to people who feel differently.

You don't have to find justification for why you dislike them retroactively.

1

u/fae_metal Aug 03 '26

thats not what theyre saying. this person obv follows and likes twin tribes and just voicing their disappointment in them for endorsing the glasses.

4

I have nothing pithy to say. Just ewwwwww

Bummer, but at least it wasn't them who filmed and posted it. Also, did anyone notice the AI flyer David J (from Bauhaus) recently posted?

1

u/krxva_118 Jul 28 '26

are you being so real with me right now oh my god.

-3

u/Pspreviewer100 Jul 27 '26

I don't think you realize that those glasses are first and foremost used for the ability to record video. Amazing video that doesn't obstruct anyone's view like a phone would. A lot of bands and fans are using them.

Yes, they're connected to meta AI but that has absolutely nothing to do with this.

A little bit of research goes a long way, you know?

-1

u/JhonImbalance Jul 27 '26

Now I’m really glad I didn’t pay to see their show on Saturday night. Fuuuuuck these guys.

Yes, but they are plenty of people who use meta glasses for innocuous reasons. I remember a guy using some to film himself cooking once. Also, in your edit, you mentioned recording ICE and cops, so clearly this tech can be used for good.

But it would make it a lot easier than carrying a camera or phone around. The point of tech is to make life easier. I just think it's not a fair presumption to dismiss this piece of tech just because people tend to be creeps with them, as several people have done some good with them.

6

u/CharlesDickensABox Jul 27 '26

The pervert glasses that let Mark Zuckerberg watch and sell anything you do? Hard pass, and hard pass on anyone who shells out a ridiculous amount of money to bring weirdo surveillance tech into the lives of everyone around them.

Are people anti meta glasses now? Why? I don’t see how they are bad like AI.

Edit: lol genuine question

Edit 2: also other genuine question is that did they know? Like does the story that was filmed with them say they are filmed with the glasses? Idk how that stuff works on IG

u/Wise-Field-7353 Jul 27 '26

Have you not come across specs pests yet? It's grim

16

u/I_Pay_in_Cash_Only Jul 27 '26

Is that people being creeps with it?

19

u/toxicketchup Jul 27 '26

Yes. The fact that people can just covertly photograph or record without consent, or any indication that they are doing so, is already making the voyeuristic pervert shit even worse.

7

u/I_Pay_in_Cash_Only Jul 27 '26

Ya I can see that being especially bad at goth concerts
