Horror Something is Killing the Children
I am a big fan of James Tynion IV and Tiny Onion so I was very excited to pick up SIKTC. But after having read the Nice House series, Vol 1 Department of Truth, Vol 1 W0rldtr33, Exquisite Corpses, Deviant, and The Closet, I have to say, SIKTC is not gripping me as much as I’d hope. I’m not done Book 1 so no spoilers please, and I’m still hopeful, but…it’s my least favourite so far. Thoughts?

SIKTC is very much a "vibes first" book. It is extremely decompressed and it drips out lore and true plot development at a frustratingly slow pace. I still enjoy it, but I have to remind myself to engage with it for what it is.

I think I know what you mean. I’m looking forward to reading it at night while camping and getting real vibey…I think that may change things

This is probably why I enjoy it so much. I find most comics move too fast for my tastes. SIKTC is just right. I also enjoy the emphasis on storytelling through body language. Like #39 is largely built around when Erica is and isn't maintaining eye contact.

I enjoy the Nice House series because it’s slow and vibey, I’m just finding SIKTC doesn’t have as much depth so far

Yes, definitely a big difference between "slow and vibe-y" versus "decompressed and vibe-y."

I liked Nice House because I found it decompressed and vibey

I didn’t have a problem with the pacing through the first two omnis. It takes a real dive when it gets into regular flashback arcs after that though. I am definitely ready to get back to Erika in the present day.

I don't know about SIKTC as much but I've recently finished department of truth vol. 2 and it is just as good as vol. 1 if not better Tynion might be my favourite writer tbh.

He is my favortie writter atm. Though I'm still quite new to the graphic novel world, I think he'll always be in my top. I'm very happy to hear that about Vol 2 of DOT!

SIKTC was so good to me. Department of truth is the one I can’t vibe with at all. I’ve tried twice but still haven’t gotten thru deluxe vol 1.
It’s prob my fav but I really like the nice house series, and Exquisite Corpses. Still need to check out the rest

The art in Department of Truth is not my favourite but I’m still really enjoying it. Nice House is top tier for me! It is cool how the stories touch people in different ways. I’m not sure your age, but for me in my late 30s, SIKTC is feeling a little young for me maybe? I’m not sure

I’m in my mid 30s now.
Idk when I opened up SIKTC it literally felt like a Netflix show I binged. Like it was meant to be adapted haha.Nice house is top tier for me too but it’s so much filling back and forth to remember the whole cast. While SIKTC the premise was gripping right away, and liked the mystery in it. Did it come off as childish or why do you think your age was a factor?

It is feeling like its target audience is younger than the other Tynion books I’ve read. But I should really finish it before making these judgements. I like it, I’m just not loving it like I have his other works. I love that feeling of binging like a Netflix series. I felt that way with Exquisite Corpses!

I had the same experience. On paper I should love it, but it’s missing something.

I'm glad it's not just me. I'm committed to buying the trades at this point and can always get them for cheap, but I feel the exact same way

As a fellow Tynion fan...SiKtC is what made me love him. LOL! WYND is also good if you want something more cozy and less murdery.

I will check out WYND but it’s not that I don’t like the murdery, I actually loved Exquisite Corpses! Something is just missing for me in SIMTC - and even then, I do like it, I’m just not LOVING it like I do other Tynion

Oh, I meant that because it's not like his other stuff, not that you wouldn't like it! I've got Exquisite Corpses on my wishlist for future purchasing! He also wrote the most recent Justice League Dark Run if that's something that interests you.

Haha ya no all good! I am actually looking forward to getting into WYND when I want cozy vibes

My HC of Something is Killing the Children is expected to deliver from InStockTrades this Tuesday! I'm so excited, it looks awesome!
I honestly loved SIKTC. It was a fun, exciting action-horror thriller but I get why it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. It can be a little cheesy at times. On that note, House of Slaughter was really boring and I just couldn't stick with it.

Finishing Vol 2 of the Department of Truth and having finished Book 1 of SIKTC, DOT feels like a more grown up version of SIKTC. Same story
