The Frankenstein and Invisible Man books are top tier friend. Enjoy those. Before you read these, give the original Universal monsters movie a quick watch. It's amazing how both incorporate the movies so well in unexpected ways.

I have seen all the universal monster movies but it's been a few years. Will definitely need a refresher

I've really been enjoying the Universal Monsters releases. I've read the Dracula and Invisible Man ones, but plan on reading them all eventually.

I used to see American vampire a lot but never gave it a shot. This time of year is perfect for it. Let me know what you think.

I am about to reread the first volume myself. I read that a while ago before I fell in love with Jeff lemires work and now I have to reread it as a biased man.

Are those universal monsters books good? I’ve been looking at them but I’m not sure if I should pick them up

Dracula was good. Phantom of the Opera too. Mostly because of the art. Creature of the Black Lagoon wasn’t good. I haven’t read the rest.

Really? What's wrong with the Lagoon one?
2
u/StrangeDiscipline902 18d ago
It’s not about the creature. It’s about someone abused from their past trying to get revenge on them. Creature is barely in it.

So a revenge story and creature is like an interloper or background?

Background character, yes. It doesn’t make an impact on the story until the very end.

For the Universal Monster books do we need to see the movies to understand them? Are these prequels, sequels or adaptions?

Seeing the movies would give you a better understanding as These are not direct adaptions. The are sequals, prequals, retellings through different characters.
