Audio book > book > graphic novel

As someone who has listened to the book and read the graphic novels: I’m honestly not sure someone would like the graphic novel if they hadn’t read/listened to the book. I like the graphic novels only because they follow the book almost exactly and they brought the book to visual life for me.

I'd probably agree and just remove the graphic novel altogether. I just have an unnatural biased hate of all artwork that's basically "Webtoon" style and that's exactly what it is.

My introduction was the comic preview at Free Comic Book Day a while back. That coupled with my sister pressuring me for a couple years finally wore me down and now I'm on the fourth audio book and invested.

Respect your preference, but don't understand it myself. The audiobook is way to melodramatic and anime-voice for me. (As someone who loves anime). Yeah it's a very tongue-in-cheek book, but still it's rather grounded (as far as the genre can be)

I’ve seen this said before and it’s so interesting to me because I was the opposite, I didn’t like the books because it just felt too cheesy, but it worked much better in a comic medium

I am starting with the graphic novel and its a treat. It's good to know its also faithful to the book.

I devoured the novels earlier this year and loved them. I am primarily a graphic novel reader, but I found this adaptation to be lacking. There’s just so much going on in the books that just didn’t get translated to the comics. I also wasn’t impressed with the art.

If there are things you like about the comic but it’s not quite there, I’d suggest checking out the novels (and definitely the audiobooks as well).

I will say that the artwork is lacking, not necessarily in style, but in telling the story. You have to kind of fill in the pieces because the panels dont exacly explain everything....and im a comjc book collector and enthusiasts so thsts important. I will say i got these realky inexpensively and is giving me a look into the series. Like i say, i just finished volume one in about an hour and a half and im not convinced i need to read volume two 🤣

I 100% understand what you’re saying. I’ve only read the ā€œfirst issueā€ that was out on FCBD, but it did such a poor job explaining the set-up that I would have been turned off if I hadn’t already read the book.

Don’t let these ruin a pretty fun story — get the first book and enjoy the crawl! (Also, the audiobooks are just a delight!)

I don't think the manwha artist really fits the theme of the story. No slam on the artist, I know it's an intensional style, and they are doing good at it. But yeah the story is lacking a bit. Sometimes too much showing, without enough telling a rare complaint!)

The graphic novel is rough. I believe it's a reframed webtoon, the art style is uninspired and does not look particularly good, Carl looks like a teenager, and its sense of emphasis is very strange.

Manga style, everyone looks child or teenager or a million years old. Those are the only options.

I have definitely read manga where people looked in their late twenties or early thirties.

It's got a comic too?! Also I love that Princess Donut design

I found out about it through the one off collectors comic that was released. That became valuable so they released other covers or it. The main story is in graphic novel form so i picked up both volumes. Really quick read

It has 2 comics. This one and one that will be out next year that is a new story from a different character.

Ok. I have to admit that i originally collected the Comic because it wascan homage to Absolute Batman. I have multiple copies but never bothered to ope them, just bought then straight into a bag & board. I may take a look inside now 🤣

What is this about? I keep hearing about it

Dungeon Crawler Carl, it's originally a series of novels that has slowly been adapted into the comic you see here. It's about an alien government that comes to earth and forces all surviving humans to compete in a Dungeon-based reality show that will be broadcasted to the entire universe.I goddamn love this series with all my heart, and highly recommend the audiobooks. (Also ive done a shit ton of fanart if this series)

The audiobooks have ruined all other audiobooks for me. They’re SO good!

I’m on my 5th round of all of them right now.

Oh you will love Mountain Man audio book, give it a try, even listen to a sample of it, so so good, its a different guy but he also slightly sounds like Patrick Warburton, like he does in DCC

u/KayaQueen 1d ago

I’ve seen so much about this since I came back to Reddit I’ve been seriously considering checking these out

1

u/TheGlowingFan 1d ago

Wow they’re printing these out quick, I remember Vol 1 only came out this past summer.

2

u/M0torC1tyMaver1ck 1d ago

There's just the 2 volumes as of now

1

u/moonarc123 1d ago

Vol 1 is great! Waiting for Vol 2 to get delivered, hopefully next week, and I’ll jump into that

I also didn’t know what to expect really, everyone was so hyped up about this so I gave it a try earlier this year and it was such a fun and interesting read, excited to see how Vol 2 is

The novels are much, much better

1

u/YourDeathIsOurReward 19h ago

Thats the worst way to read it. You would be much better off with the book or audio

u/CountZero3000 18h ago

Can’t be worse than the books
