Icl it would just get filled by Dave and Central Cee songs because most people even brits don't understand the difference between grime and UK rap or UK hip hop

Ive seen interviews with D double and even JME when they themselves really blur the line between anything UK and grime i ntheir own definition. Had to rethink when I found myself thinking D Double E was wrong on his definition of grime. But then maybe they do that so it conflates them with super popular artists etc on spotify

Yeah I remember this interview, TBF he did look absolutely zooted and was talking slow even for D Double 😂.

This is basicallly what Grime playlists evolved into on these streaming platforms until the Genre of Grime itself was whittled down to nothing.

Shit UK trap music killed grime I feel, all the youts wanted to be the next trapstars instead of a grime artist. It doesn't help that alot of the big grime artists either stopped dropping music or switched genre.

BRING BACK WILEY!

Nah i don't blame UK trap because UK Drill, Road Rap/UK Trap, Afro swing have all coexisted together during the same time period and imo, I just don't think Grime continued to evolve past the stage it was at. Like fair enough UK drill may not be at its peak now and especially afroswing has had its time but its all down to the music being made and whether its been consistently growing and sounding fresh or just getting repetitive and watered down. Like all these genres can go strong if they either evolve or new artists add their own spin.

I feel like UK trap is sound thats more easier and accessible which is why its still going forward today and even drill where I feel like Grime is much more complex than just regular rap.

Its even been like that at the peak of grime too. I remember in 2015 or 16 they called Krept & Konan grime. Even in a video I saw not long ago, Vikkstar123 called Young Spray a grime rapper 😭

Who’s running that? Can’t all be Jammer, this conversation was needed like 5 years ago.

I agree though promoting grime feels fruitless nowadays. Anyone making money of it are probably releasing music on a USB rather than through streaming and Bandcamp.

Some kind of weekly/monthly chart would be great.

2016 at least felt like a second wave of grime (and when I really started getting into it). MCs were still putting out albums and big clashes were still coming (P Money vs Dot). Logan Sama was still on radio.

Last 5 years or so, especially post covid the scene feels like it's plateaued. Like I don't think there's anyone new that's overshadowed what we had in 2016.

DJs I like are still putting out mixes and radio shows which is great, Tim & Barry is in the national archive, JME's still putting in work. Good things are still happening but I don't think enough of a following to warrant a chart.

I'll keep listening and supporting the scene where I can, Grime mixes still get me through the work day.

It’s hard to include everything all
Grime as u have to include what’s going on outside London too like notts, birms etc etc a lot that stuff also doesn’t get included and gets lost in the middle of things

I think it’s not fruitless. Ppl made grime for love. Now a days that translates to funds. We need more grime clothes. And artist merch and someone like Spyro to do events. I like merch jme offers

Fully agree, I think JMEs doing the right thing by encouraging fans to come to his shows if they want to hear his new music. He doesn’t seem to give the tracks that up on online any names either, they’re just blank on YouTube.

i don’t like the “we need to give them an incentive otherwise there’s no point”

like? most artists create art because they want to express freely, not to win some awards or accolades

u/CanonA1 2d ago

I think people just want to celebrate grime with like minded individuals and give flowers to the ones that deserve it

no one cares about it unfortunately. These things would exist if there was money in it and there would be money in it if people did care.

Its not 'cool', its oldhead or niche beyond the recycled Skepta freestyles trending on tiktok with mellow beats.

People like Manga don't understand that it isn't relevant enough anymore to warrant these things.

4

u/ParkingLong7436 2d ago

I think Manga understands it well, he just wants it to thrive again like it used to.

The second wave of grime in the 2010s showed us that its possible to rebirth the sound and bring in a new audience, long after the genre has been dead already. You'd just need one or two big tunes to get it rolling.

Grime as a genre will in my opinion always the potential to become big again. There isn't a lot of stuff that fills the niche that grime does.

Because grime is not a commercial genre. It’s like hardcore. Counter culture, completely DIY. Not looking to win over the labels.

2

u/Remote_Development13 2d ago

Wait, iTunes still exists? Genuinely thought it had been shut down in about 2009

Because Grime doesn't sell. Dere ya go.

There isn't enough grime artists that sell making strictly grime within a year for this to be viable in the slightest.

You could, realistically, create one yourself, but the machine does not need the energy or hassle. It'll consist of about 5/6 of the same artists each yeah and those names are the same names that were there when the genre started.

These lot rap. There's no reason to not include it in a UK Rap/Grime chart. Independent is such a broad term, grime is not.

Part of the music industry is to promote popular music that helps to promote products , grime had its pop moments in 2003/2004 then 08/09 then 2015-2019 , the thing is grime also has to compete with dubstep, uk rap, house and trap/drill , grime can still be very independent but people must understand the landscape of music in general has changed

What’s Manga doing inside a car?

Shouldn’t he be outside?

2

u/ferris_bueller_2k 2d ago

Grime artists Are tramps and never bothered to set up infrastructure beyond selling bbk t-shirts

2

u/CanonA1 2d ago

Because we haven’t built the grime ecosystem to it’s fullest potential, everyone has tried bits and bobs separately but we all need to come together to be proactive about grime and its future

2

u/jickiechin 23h ago

Because its an underground genre and always will be

4

u/battrypack 2d ago

because it’s an irrelevant dead genre

1

u/Sensitive_Goose4728 2d ago

My thoughts exactly unfortunately, grime had a good run...

1

u/HarryBlessKnapp 2d ago

Nah there's a few select niches doing very well in less common grime spaces

1

u/KingKaychi 2d ago

We've been saying this for years.

1

u/siwelis10304 2d ago

I can imagine the beef it would cause already

1

u/Working-Spray-2933 2d ago

I agree. It’s really upsetting.

Mangas right!

Grime is so freah when done right with no compromises. Everytime I hear a proper grime instrumental and an mc really laying it down, I realize this thing is timeless. But people are right, ngl I fell into the trap of listening to a lot of Drill, but afyer a while, I realized this aint it, and it doesn't even have the same essence, energy and feeling of grime. If there will ever be a proper big break again, is just a matter of time.

But the ones keeping alive need to stay in that. Its necessary.

1

u/FlimminyJipper 1d ago

Let's say it how it is. Your average person in the UK would confuse grime with drill and knife crime as a whole.

We simply aren't going to glorify that by giving it it's own chart, and people aren't ready for the discussion on how the music is separate.

And seeing how your average UK grime/drill fan dresses, I can't blame them.

pre-2018/19 this would’ve made sense, now no

Unfortunately I don't think Grime right now is strong enough to have its own chart like that. If it was 2015/16 where imo had some of the last biggest moments of grime with the beefs, the sound further going global, the music at the time then yeah. Not to say after that time grime hasn't had moments but its moment in the limelight started fizzling and most major notoriety was coming from names that have been established for a long time in the genre. Like even a grime playlist now would either have a bunch of older tracks that were popular or new tracks that aren't even grime and probably are just there for the fact they originated from grime.

With that being said, I'm just talking if we looking at grime's place next to other popular sub genres of UK music. It doesn't need mainstream recognition to flourish as a genre. It can flourish just as well as the underground scene would do and even that scene has incoperated grime influences with people like Finnesekid, Teebofg, Jim Legxacy etc. Grime does have the ability of being in a much better place than it should be and it definitely needs to evolve with the times with its sound than evolving to the point where the new genres it's influenced take over.

It's cos grime is DEAD AF. No new tunes, no hype. No clashes. Nothing.

u/MethodDue2426 1d ago

What makes something grime and not one of the other genres? Fast flow?
