Question Nah fr??

I feel like most of the local meteorologists are being cautious with any predictions. Most are saying the potential is there for a significant storm.

u/MissionGuava730 Jan 20 '26
There is a guy named Ethan he use fb as source for carolina weather updates he is usually 96% accurate but usually 48 hours before the storm

u/yourcousinfromboston Jan 20 '26
Yup, and he’s another one who as also been saying the potential is there. People on social media expect meteorology to be an exact science. It’s not. Better to be a little prepared than caught with your pants down

Looks like per his website he's on Twitter and Instagram too, but not sure in what capacity.

Too early for any accurate predictions on amounts of snow or ice, but something legit is coming. Let’s just hope it’s all snow.
I remember the ice storm in the early 2000s that took out power for 4 days
8
u/Swimmer1090 Jan 20 '26
9 days or longer in some parts of the triad. Ice quantity is the big question.
3
u/Brilliant-Pie5207 Jan 21 '26
That was horrible. We were out longer than four days. Finally the power came back on and we decided to go see a movie while the house warmed back up. When we got home, looking forward to being warm and cozy, and the power had gone back off. We were so disappointed!

I mean… they can’t be wrong ALL the time, right? We have to get some good snow fall this weekend. Stay safe out there.
Also.. fuck ice, all my homies hate ice.

u/RUN_DMT_ Jan 20 '26

Apple weather is saying up to 30” right now between Saturday and Sunday… haha insanity.
I personally love snow and I’ve been bummed we haven’t had a good one since 2022 (and that was just a few inches). 2018 was a great snow. Fingers crossed for some thick fluffy snow and no ice!

Never trust Apple Weather. I don’t know what data they use, but it is terrible.

Yeah, it is like taking all the bad stuff from several places, it is just not good. My wife has an iphone and I have a pixel. Whenever there is a difference, hers is usually way off. My pixel is showing 21", and hers is showing more, either way, it is likely to be a significant storm. I moved south to get out of this crap. Will be interesting to see how the area handles it.

Moved here from Rochester, NY in 2024 and people keep saying "Oh, so you're used to this weather."
Yeah, and I HATED IT. THAT'S WHY I'M HERE. AAAGGGGHHHHHH.
Anyway, I look forward to fighting you all for the last carton of eggs at Food Lion on Friday night. Stay safe.

u/cbeagle Jan 21 '26
Fellow Rochestarian here!🙋♀️ I have chickens and I have plenty of eggs on hand so if you need some, I can hook you up.😉

u/Rukkian Jan 21 '26
Yeah, we lived in Minnesota for many years and Iowa the rest of our lives. While I know how to handle it, I did not move my snowblower, so not looking forward to this.

I remember the 96-97 era. I think we didn’t have school for 2.5 weeks. This one looks like it’ll be similar.

Man i feel for the kids nowadays with online school instead of no school during snow days

My kid is in Elementary school and still gets snow days. No online school for his age group. But gets to deal with all the make up days and losing the little random teacher work day holidays

This far out, I think we can trust that we will get some snow. Still too far out to say we’re getting feet, but it’s not out of the question.
I hope we get shitloads, and that it stays for exactly one week. I like it the day of and the day after, then it’s a nuisance.

Prepare for ice and power outages. It's going to be very cold. I am worried for people.

u/BlueEyesWNC Jan 23 '26
They upgraded the forecast from a little ice and lots of snow to multiple inches of ice

I grew up in Charlotte, where - if a single flake of snow was spotted anywhere within 30 miles - the whole city shut the F down for what would 99% of the time be rain. Just rain. Cold rain, but just rain.
Moved to GSO in September 1999. Come January 2000, all the weather folk were all "ZOMG it's gonna snooooooow" and my skeptical ass was all "Uh huh, pull my other leg, it plays Jingle Bells."
The morning of the ZOMG Snow Day, I staggered sleepily to my back door and opened it so my Chihuahua could go outside to pee.
Said Chihuahua freaking vanished.
Why?
Because he was only 9 inches tall and the snow was 11 inches deep. My sleep-fogged, not-yet-caffeinated brain wrestled with both the white stuff everywhere and the abrupt absence of my dog. He then shot up out of the snow like a fuzzy, wild-eyed, and super-duper pissed off dolphin, and raced back into the apartment. The stinkeye he gave me nearly raised blisters on my skin.
Having no shovels or anything, I ended up using a dinner plate and a bowl to dig/scrape enough snow away to expose grass so my dear little Gomez could relieve himself. He lived 12 more years, and never forgave me for that one time I accidentally let him dive into the snow.
TL;DR - I and my little dog learned the hard way not to scoff at GSO weather forecasts 🥶 Even if crap weather doesn't manifest as crappily as the models predict, I don't hold it against meteorologists.

I feel like we've had a couple decent shows in the last 5 years since I've lived here.
Doesn't last long, but it gives you at least one day off sometimes

u/Iwasc00lonce Jan 20 '26
If genuinely like to believe the weather here for once. I moved here from Buffalo NY when I was 14 and I’m now 33 and still can’t tell when it’s actually going to snow until day of.
2
u/CAD8033 Jan 20 '26
The last really significant snow that I recall in GSO was Feb 2014. Only know because I have pics on my phone. I don't remember if there was ice also but it was a significant weather event.

I trust Tim Buckley w/ WFMY when it comes to this stuff. I work in Burlington and have to work this weekend, so I went ahead and booked a hotel near my workplace to be safe!

u/DatGurlGotTaste Jan 21 '26
In 2018 we got 18 inches. That was a little taller than a ruler.
2
u/MissionGuava730 Jan 21 '26
Idk 18 inch in gso but maybe near triad area I think we had about a 10 inch on 2018

Every 15 or so years it seems like we get a larger than normal amount of snow. It happens.

Model runs are still too far out to be concrete in totals and the exact precipitation. But it looking promising that there will be some snow.

Got my Jeep back just in time! Midwestern driver: ACTIVATE!

u/Ok_Entertainment328 Jan 20 '26
Doesn't work here.
Things ice up, not pretty snow roads. Ice turns 4WD into 0WD instantly. You have been warned.
All the skills in the world are useless when an some idiot looses control and hits you.

u/contude327 Jan 20 '26
True. I never worried about my skills driving in shit weather, but I can't say that about the rest of the drivers.
1
u/RtotheBtotheG Jan 20 '26
Oh fully understood: I grew up in GA and acquired snow driving skills. I know ice is the great equalizer and we are all screwed.

Usually what the weather people say- we go with the exact opposite and we have been correct at least 75% of the time
Maybe we should report the weather
Everyone enjoy your bread and milk🤣 It’s called a “White” forecast
Only hope the power doesn’t go out

We had a foot of snow in 2018.
It does happen.
