Mod Gwent Beta 0.9.24 Private Server
I've gotten the old Gwent open beta, the pre-Homecoming version, working online again by making a reverse-engineered private server that stands in for GOG's, so the game connects and runs like the official servers used to.

The beta is such a different game from the current version, I felt like it needed to be preserved and made playable again in some way. The project is all open source, and I'm fairly sure it could be extended to other versions of the game if anyone's interested in that, most likely even Homecoming/current versions.

Right now you can play online casual matches against other people, play against the AI, do the single-player challenges, build decks, buy kegs, craft cards, mill them, etc. Ranked play and Arena aren't implemented yet though.

You can play on the community server I'm running, or host your own for you and your friends, play over LAN, or just play single-player. You could even run modded matches against each other, as long as both players have the same modded card files, e.g. you could add fully new custom cards.
The only catch to playing is that you need your own original beta game files for this version, Gwent 0.9.24.3.432.
Also if you don't trust the prebuilt launcher you can read through the project and code to see how it all works fully, and/or build it yourself.

Wow. I never played the beta, but I've got to say I really admire and appreciate your dedication and hard work in doing this. It gives me hope that the current game might live on forever, too.

I am using the game version from archive but no matter what I do it says "Could not connect, this game version is no longer supported" it drives me nuts...

Do you have GOG fully closed, and does my launcher run without any errors?

u/therealcatarn Neutral Jun 18 '26
GoG fully closed. Im using steam now, steam is running in the bg. Launcher runs w/o errors, downloads stuff creates account and laucnhes the game after but cant connect then, Local server the same.

Is this the last beta that came before they went live? That was my favorite version of Gwent!

Is your server still working? Game says "Could not connect, please check your internet connection".
Edit: Worked after I restarted my PC.

Will you be adding compatible versions for future client releases over time, such as 1.0, etc.?

Yes, hopefully, but it'll be a while before I get around to it. I'm working right now though on a modding tool for this version so people can add their own cards, cosmetics and other stuff before I start work on the other versions

oh no, dont focus on diy cards please 🤔

u/KilliWallace123 We do what must be done. Jul 29 '26
No I'll never change anything on the main server, just let people add custom avatars, borders, cardbacks, boards, and stuff to their own games on their side locally.
They can make new cards or change existing ones for their own lan games or if they want to host their own server, but I'll never change anything about the cards on the default one

custom servers will divide the players, would be nice to play on closed beta snapshot though
2
u/KilliWallace123 We do what must be done. Jul 29 '26
People can already create their own custom servers

There is one beta Gwent version run by Chinese people and they have a Discord server. They even made updates and changed cards. Sadly I am no longer part of the Discord server and don't know the name.
edit: i found it: Legacy Gwent

I think I know that server, but unless it's a different one, it's not the official game client like mine uses. They use a custom built version that emulates the look and feel of the original game

Yeah, I've been trying it for some time, but nah. If you'd think balance council is bad - imagine if it could also rework cards and create new ones - that's what Legacy Gwent is.

I don't think they meant adding chat to the game. A simple discord server with an LFG role would do. reddit is great for discussions but it sucks for chatting and you can't ping roles.

yes, u/KilliWallace123 please make a discord server and attach link to it in the project

I've followed all the steps above, game stlll won't launch. GwentBetaLauncher.exe in admin mode, configuring DNS and services, then "Gwent closed" and nothing else happens.

No VPN. I have Hamachi used time to time for LAN but I don't see how it would impact.
Thanks for your help tho' !

I have download the private server and the 0.9.24.3.432 version, lauched in admin the launcher, made a new User, launch "play" but nothing is happening - game is not launching.
Anything I may have missed ? On a different laptop, it's the same result

Hi, looks more like the original gwent, how much single player content in this beta version?
2
u/KilliWallace123 We do what must be done. Jun 17 '26
Not too much, there's a challenge game mode with 30 challenges to do, 6 per faction. They're basically just AI matches with preselected decks though. Earlier beta versions had a few seasonal events like saovine and midwinter as well, that I haven't implemented yet, but they had a few single player puzzles attached to them like the kind in Thronebreaker
