No it will be polluting our fresh water !

But agree 1000% fuck this AI centre bullshit!

They don’t pollute fresh water like that. The waste heat is warm, and can cause rivers to warm up. Shouldn’t be an issue, if we do this right everyone can have in floor heating.

u/Different_Stomach_53 15h ago

Hmm My husband literally studied warming lakes and how that impacts fish for his phd, it's not good. And obviously then impacts the whole ecosystem.

u/Agitated_Award_9831 15h ago

The joke is we use the warm water for in-floor heating, because electricity prices are stupid. Yes heating lakes up can be bad.

•

u/Gas_Grouchy 9h ago

Great part of NS is the giant ocean avalible. And while yes heating lakes has a negative effect I think the evniromental impact is worth it. Obviously dont do it to every lake in site but man made lakes etc. There are far more eviromental impact that negatively effect lake animals than warming it 2 degrees

Rivers warming up is a huge problem, actually! Most species are temperature sensitive, not to mention it has knock on affects for things like oxygenation of the water.

This is satire.

With the number of people who actually think like that, and the lack of context (any knowledge of you as a person, facial expressions, tone of voice, etc...) beyond the literal words you are writing, you're going to have to add a /s unless you take it further.

•

u/picklesrlyfe 8h ago

I don’t care what your shoes are made of.

There's plenty of Areas to build an AI Data center in Nova Scotia that would bring money to communities that need it. It's not a great business but its what people are throwing money at. So long as they improve current services to make up the difference, its worth it.

15

u/semifunctionaladdict 19h ago

You really think any bit of those millions are actually going to the respective communities?

-11

u/Gas_Grouchy 18h ago

Yes, it has to in order to be built and maintained.

•

u/ngetch 11h ago

I see you don't understand how large projects operate or are built.

The company who gets contracted to build will bring most of their own employees into the area, and likely will buy most of the building supplies from a supplier in their local area where they already have relationships to get them the best prices for their project, thereby increasing their profits.

And maintenance may employee 10 people long-term, but that's optimistic.

•

u/Ben_Criss_Cross 10h ago

You think they're shipping in all their building materials, tools and machinery from the US for this build?

•

u/Gas_Grouchy 10h ago

Right? I've done M&E design and the local contractor almost ALWAY gets the job. I get the data center has some specialized equipment theyre not getting the local plumber to build, but laying cable, connectors building steel framing etc. None of that needs people flown in.

On top of that the water and power they need will both increase total supply and build infrastructure to not have power outages which is good for the community. Plus if its 10 jobs in a town of 1000 thats still quite a bit. That liquor, food, convience, vehicle repair etc. Etc. That adds to the local community for 10 families.

•

u/ngetch 9h ago

No. But if Black&Mac or Lindsay get it, supplies would almost certainly come out of HRM. Bigger outfits with infrastructure often move their own supplies.

•

u/Ben_Criss_Cross 8h ago

HRM/Nova Scotia, it's all the same province...besides, you bring in 200 workers for a construction project (even for a short time) they will need somewhere to eat, stay, do recreational activities, use services, so the local community still benefits.

u/Squade_Trompeur 9h ago

That man needs to be run out of the country

•

u/Electronic_Trade_721 7h ago

He used to help money run out of the country. I'd guess he still does.

Now show a picture of Port Hawkesbury. Former site of pulp mill, oil port, refinery, heavy water plant. Might be an improvement.

17

u/DarkKnightTazze Nova Scotia 12h ago

I mean no offense to Port Hawkesbury but it has always struck me as a pretty depressing place. I don’t agree with the data centre but if I had to pick a spot to put one, that’s probably the place I’d pick.

•

u/BullshitPeddler 9h ago

There was a book that came out towards the end of the '70s called "The case of Port Hawkesbury Rapid Industrialization and Social Unrest in a Nova Scotia Community". It's a hilarious, depressing and kinda fascinating look at why Hawkesbury would never materialize as the next boomtown. The small town drama, the stories of Cape Breton workers' mindset from an outsider's perspective, the way the town over emphasized its growth through insane municipal taxes. A really insightful look at why Cape Breton stereotypes are so pervasive.

25

u/SlamVanDamn 20h ago

Yes, surely they'll stop there. The private industry is known for their restraint after all.

-24

u/Gas_Grouchy 20h ago

I hope they don't. We need some god damn businesses. We just need to not kill it environmentally. There's LOTS of tech out now to not kill the ocean ffs. It's like "Nuclear is BAD cause Chernobyl" Like there isn't 70+ plants in Canada. NB has 1 and it cost 30% less for power. They also supply 40% of their power.

24

u/DistantDrawings 20h ago

Its going to need 14% of the power NS can produce, but I'm sure that won't affect our grid or bills at all.Ā

1

u/knox902 14h ago

I'm sure Everwind fuels, the renewable energy company planning this has not thought about the power needs whatsoever and are dropping $2b on wind farms for fun.

You know, ontop of the $60b Winds West that will increase the provinces power output by more than 200%

Things are bad now for energy in NS, thanks Emera, but I am hoping the tides turn with the new development. The province should be generating more than it consumes which it currently does not. It will be nice to see a lot less reliance on fossil fuels for NS energy too. Currently the majority is from coal burning.

•

u/East-Specialist-4847 9h ago

Wind turbines will be built a few years after the data center, if at all

•

u/Gas_Grouchy 8h ago

And if theyre not, NS power has a payong client at extremely high bill to make their massive profits off and can maybe be less greedy or invest in infrastructure (more money to the province) this is good either way.

•

u/knox902 8h ago

I'm not super savy on the details, from what I have read the ones Everwind would be building directly connected to the project would be aligned with the timeline.

Winds west would be after for sure. It would certainly change the possibilities of what can be done in the province. It would also mean Emera could export power rather than having to import it which means more money for them and we all know how much they like money.

•

u/East-Specialist-4847 8h ago

But no money or benefit to the neighbouring community of the data center or the province

•

u/DJ_Chaps Dartmouth 8h ago

No money? False.

u/Gas_Grouchy 8h ago

Exactly, putting in competition to NS power is a good thing.

•

u/oldbutfeisty 11h ago

You've nailed it. These 2 events are not at all independent. So there's a plan for a ready made client for the energy. How very sensible

•

u/East-Specialist-4847 9h ago

The AI data center will destroy or nature and sense of peace within like a 20 km radius. Let's not say random bullshit before we find out of its actually good or bad, okay?

•

u/Gas_Grouchy 9h ago

Theyre mandated for 50 dB at the property line which in 500m go to 40 dB which is akin to a neighborhood.

Also if you've ever been in rural NS you'll know theres typically one road of which your 20km radius affects maybe 5 homes? Which can be greatly reduced with proper planning of the location. Thats assuming your pull out the ass number is correct.

We need industry in the province. Period. Idgaf what it is we need it so long as its helping finically and not being governnent funded.

•

u/East-Specialist-4847 9h ago

Dog it's an American company, the money made will not go to our community

And fuck nature right? And fuck drinking water too!

Just say you don't give a shit about anyone or anything, instead of this weird attempt at defending AI

•

u/picklesrlyfe 8h ago

It’s super fucking weird the amount of people in the Nova Scotian subs defending the data centres with fluffy details. It’s clearly just shilling but disgusting to see. ā€œThis one’s nice and will save the worldā€ get fucked.

•

u/Gas_Grouchy 8h ago

Because NS needs industry and an industry thats a huge project many jobs a lot of moneybto the economy that would be just in NB or another province comes in and people that think every rural area across the province won't have peace and quiet or every lake will have giant heat sinks in them. The heat sink is more minimal with this size then other research for heated lakes (nuclear, which we should also get) and the noise is dulled 2.5km from the site. There's gold mine made more noise then this thing.

•

u/picklesrlyfe 8h ago

So you add more fluff nonsense right after I called you out for it? You are the type of person I am calling out here, you are in these subs saying the weirdest shit just to try to sway opinions in favor of the data centres. And the money is not coming to us, it’s going to cost us money and our environment.

•

u/Gas_Grouchy 8h ago

All im getting is propaganda its bad. But how is directly talking about the negative effects fluff?

→ More replies (0)

•

u/Gas_Grouchy 8h ago

Youre largely exaggerating the effects. Were poor AF cause there too many uneducated people believing the bullshit propaganda against industry.

•

u/picklesrlyfe 8h ago

Nope, we are poor af because we allow this shit to happen to us. Again and again.

•

u/East-Specialist-4847 8h ago

We all have access to the Internet, I know I am not exaggerating, you know it too. You just don't give a shit about any living thing and people knowing a bad thing is bad pisses you off

•

u/Gas_Grouchy 8h ago

So use it. I also used Google and Facebook and Instagram say 20km, actual researched papers says 2.5km. Its fear mongering.

•

u/DJ_Chaps Dartmouth 8h ago

"let's not say random bullshit before we find out if it's actually good or bad, okay?"

Your words, while you do exactly that. Neat.

•

u/r0ger_r0ger 8h ago

Truly - they’re putting this thing in an industrial park, not the Cabot Trail. The comments in here are unhinged.

0

u/CD_4M 13h ago

Let’s not forget the fact that Sydney was basically founded around the steel plant

6

u/c_m_d 12h ago

Ah yes, back in the late 1700s when steel plants were all the rage.

•

u/oldbutfeisty 11h ago

The steel plant was long, long after. But the coal
mines were handy.

•

u/Skrehh 2h ago

Why already have 0 extra power, and have to pay penalties to shut down existing factories during shortages, what is this going to do to our power bills.

•

u/NoMany3094 8h ago edited 7h ago

What's everyone bitching about? We definitely need data centres for all the AI that'll be needed once algorithmic pricing becomes a thing! /s

•

u/HalifaxPainter 6h ago

Would there ever be any place in Nova Scotia where it would be welcomed? Is it just this location in particular, or are all data centers hated? I am not up on the news so thanks in advance for letting me know. Cheers

u/BobbyBoogarBreath 13h ago

Hey, woah, there CB. Easy on the publicity stunts. 1.5m of snow in 2 days isn't a big deal. The job and energy stealing noise and american propaganda machine isn't a big deal either! /s

•

u/essaysmith 38m ago

TIL the Cabot Trail goes through Port Hawkesbury.

•

u/SlamVanDamn 33m ago

Head-in-the-sand, willfully naive if you think this starts and ends in Port Hawkesbury
