Arts & Recreation Nocturne tonight!
What's everyone looking forward to checking out this year? I haven't been for ages but think I'm finally ready to haul my toddler out tonight to check it out. I probably won't be able to take her out for more than 2 hours so I'm wondering if anyone could recommend a good area to stick to that's more on that family friendly side. I know the waterfront is usually a good spot but it can also be a bust and it's gonna be cold tonight lol.

There is “ferry-oke” happening on the Halifax ferry.
I want to say 7:00pm to 11:30pm, but it might be starting a litter earlier (someone correct me).
$3 for the trip. It’s apparently quite entertaining.

I remember many years ago they had a small bicycle Mario kart track inside Alderny landing then after going through the track you would play Mario kart 64 on a large projection screen with others that were there. It was a blast

Watch for Purple Cow lit up backpacks on the boardwalk/ waterfront. One of those will be on me!

One year I got to see hfx circus perform for free, they had stuff setup in the public gardens late at night which was cool, and a display of rc boats in the harbour with lights at night which looked cool too. Nocturne is neat. Haven't gone in a bit maybe I'll check out this year

This has to be the most overrated event in Halifax.

First couple of years it was the best thing to happen in Halifax all year.

Agree. The first 2-3 years the entire downtown was just bumping, people everywhere and tons of interactive displays. I'm not sure what happened, but slowly the displays got fewer and farther between, and somehow less joyous if that makes sense? Anyway, I hope it is good tonight, would be great if the event could recapture it's original buzz.

Yeah the first few years it was incredible. Just wander around and see some weird and cool art. Then it became way more commercial :(.

I feel like it became way less commercial? And more political, which is absolutely fine and appropriate for art - but it became a little less "fun interactive art exhibits you can walk around with your family" and more "here's a haunting thinkpiece about political corruption" etc.

How often does Halifax have free and novel entertainment. Support artists and enjoy

It's a special kind of person who finds the needs to complain about free and local focused events.

I had a blast last year! To be fair, it was my first one, but overall I'd say it was worth the crisp night air.

FERRY-OKE
Husband and I are going with the same folks we went with last year and none of us have forgotten the little girl belting out Pink Pony Club like her life and all of ours depended on it. I suck at reading maps so I'm hoping my group has some exhibits they wanna see and will steer us. Excited to get my steps in and hopefully stay warm, it's gonna be chilly tonight.
