Lol the real crime is that hamsters don't have tiny little breath mints. Would've saved us all from this betrayal

I know how much that can hurt in the moment, man. Just make sure you keep it clean and put triple antibiotic ointment on it.

It was barely a bite, it was an exploratory nibble

Omg op! You can’t just show me such a vicious attack by a scary beast without a nsfw warning!
In all seriousness your hammu is adorable, 10/10 would risk being bit for pets and boops.

Hi, on a serious note– I'm think about getting a hamster, did anyone have experience with a bad behaved hamster or ones that would bite? 😬

Most hamsters won't immediately warm up to you right away. Avoid scaring it with sudden movements. Take it slow and tempt them to be more brave with food. Slowly let them get used to crawling into your hand over time. Eventually, they can get used to being picked up. Results may vary. Some hamster breeds are especially timid and stubborn.

Some hamsters will bite if they are scared or if you smell like food (their eyesight is really poor.) Basically your should approach them cautiously and not do things to spook them like make sudden big movements or poke around their faces/necks/bellies when they are getting to know you. Also wash your hands after doing things with food.
My family has had hamsters for many years- we've only had one that was actually aggressive (a Russian dwarf who just loved nipping at people but thankfully seldom broke the skin.) We've had a couple other bites- two because we smelled distractingly like food and one because a friend visiting tried to immediately tickle the hamster under the chin and the hamster was not having that from a stranger.

I hate this bc dwarves are often chased to be picked up because they are small & if they are frightened they can nip. It doesn't hurt. If you respect them, their feelings & their space they don't nip. People think bc they are small & look sweet, they are. Hamsters are all solitary. People take more chances with dwarves. Respect that they might not wanted handled. Dwarves are AMAZING.

Don't get me wrong, I love dwarf hams too! I promise we did not chase this poor girl around. She would happily come up, climb onto our hands, and proceed to bite us repeatedly. She really seemed to think our fingertips were either food or a threat, she was better if we kept our hands very flat when holding her. Not sure what was going on her little hamster brain, she was very outgoing but also very nippy! We had another female dwarf after her who was just as outgoing but didn't bite. We actually never picked them up, we let them walk on our hand and if they didn't we let them be.

You never just go to picking up a hamster. They are prey animals. You give it days to decompress in their new home. You can talk softly around it. Put food in. But it will be scared that you want to eat it until it knows you are safe. At that time you can talk to them when they are out, offer treats, but you ALWAYS let them set the pace. Some move faster & some slower. You can then lay your hand flat in the cage & DO NOT MOVE. You can put a treat in your hand. If they don't want it, let them see you leave it. You can then start letting them climb into a cup with treats in it. You can put it back down immediately if it gets scared. You Not all hamsters like being out of their enclosure at first & you have to earn their trust. Eventually you can use a cup as a taxi to take your hammy to a fun place like a playpen with lists of clutter & things to do. Sprinkle treats. Then after that you can start laying your hand by the end of the enclosure to let them climb into. The only time a hamster will give you a nibble is if you pick them up from top like a hawk, don't listen to them, disrespect their boundaries, etc. Your hamster may be shy. It could be brave. But they set the pace & if you give them an ethical home they love they will trust you sooner. It is all about getting them to know you are safe. 💓

Also, this can take months. If you get a hamster respect that it isn't a dog. It's scared of you. And it doesn't inherently trust you. If you want a cuddly pet I would get a dog. My hamsters are so much fun...& they now come on my hand but they are not about that life. With that said, I love them & they are a fit for me. But make sure you can take that if you don't stay up past midnight you may not see it & some like
Staying in their burrows a lot.1

I see, appreciate the info. I just have to give it some time & handle with care 👍

Dwarf hamsters are more bitey. Syrian hamsters are easier to handle and less likely to bite as a first line of defence but when they do bite it’s often worse because larger hamster = larger bite force and teeth. I generally don’t recommend hamsters as pets- they’re perfect for me but not for most people. If you need any enclosure and setup recommendations I have an entire list in my notes app ready to send over that’s up to date with all the updated info on hamster care

Ouch! I have seldom been bit by hamsters, but when I was it did hurt!
I hope you recover from this terrifying animal attack with minimal trauma!

Yes I was attacked by my dwarf hamster once and they can do a lot of damage. I’ve never had a Syrian hamster attack me though, I trust Choco to nibble and lick me because he’s very gentle
