Question My bf wants to make a DIY cage for my hammy, out of his IKEA KALLAX, but I’m afraid of the possible toxicity if she gnaws on it.

He’s going to cut off the «rooms» so that it will have 2 big rooms instead of 6 small ones.

Contents and materials:
Particleboard and fibreboard with honeycomb paper filling (100% recycled paper), paper foil, patterned and embossed acrylic paint, plastic edging.

ChatGPT says its safe because of the plastic edging, unless she gnaws a lot of it.

What’s your experience with cages made with wood? She’s not a big gnawer, but I’ve heard some hammys chewing holes in their cages…

Question Help a college student find an affordable enclosure!

Hi everyone! I’ve been lurking on here for a while since i’ve been wanting to get a dwarf hamster for a couple months now. I’m in Romania and honestly it’s really difficult to find and affordable and also appropriate cage. I’ve found these two so far, and plastic bins are basically the same price. A glass tank is almost double the price (i can’t find anyone that’s donating one in my area).
Any tips on finding the best cage for my future hammy?

Question Syrian or Winter White?

Base on your experience, what's easier to tame and easier to please? My syrian is so avoidant despite having a lot of enrichment a 120x60x60 cage.

Discussion I need to vent - Why has the hamster community become so toxic towards people who are genuinely trying to learn?

Sorry for my negativity, but I really need to get this off my chest.

I genuinely don’t understand why parts of the hamster community have become so toxic towards people simply asking questions.
I’ve asked questions such as about toxic and non-toxic moss that I haven’t even bought yet, and I’m met with downvotes and passive-aggressive replies.

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely don’t support the neglect and mistreatment so many hamsters suffer due to a lack of research and proper care. But there’s a huge difference between educating someone and making them feel stupid for asking.
Not everyone knows everything, and even experienced owners are constantly learning. This should be a safe space for both “dumb” and good questions, without fear of being judged.

If people become afraid to ask questions, they’ll eventually stop asking.

You can advocate for proper care without being condescending or unkind. We’re all here because we care about our hamsters.

Rainbow Bridge My hamster died at 1 year and 4 months

Post image

Zloty was my first ever hamster. I tried my best to give him everything. For the last few days, I've been experiencing one of my depressive episodes. I still checked on him every night (made sure he has water and scattered seeds or treats or veggies depending on his feeding schedule). Last night (Saturday) I scattered some worm treats on his enclosure before I went to bed. I didn't see him but it was already 10 pm and he wakes uo at around 7 pm. Tonight (Sunday), I checked on him and was shocked when the worm treats were still on the surface (he loves those) I checked the watchbox and he was there. I just put him in a box right now. It sucks because I have to go to school tomorrow and I have no idea what I'm going to do. I live in a very cramped city and idk where to bury him. I don't want to just guve him to the garbage collectors (though it looks like that's the only choice I have).

Advices please.. also, did he die too young or is this normal hamster lifespan? (he's a Syrian)

Sorry for ranting, I don't have anyone to talk to about this and

Goodbye Zloty, I'll miss you.

Edit: Thanks a lot everyone. It's taking a lot for me rn just to get to school and all of your comments really helped. Much love to everyone ☺️

Question What’s your honest opinion?

My baby is 1 year and 10 months old and I happened to find a fair sized lump under her right arm. I took her to the vet and his opinion was to let her live as comfortably as possible but he didn’t say he wouldn’t remove it. He said sine she’s almost 2 she might not come out of anesthesia and if she does her body may not be strong enough to recover 💔 the surgery is at minimum 600$ and that would be partially coming out of my rent money. 🥺💔😭 what would you do?

Question Do you ever get over your hamsters death?

Hey,

My little Hamster got put to sleep after a traumatic illness. He had cancer and his little body was filling up with fluid.

He got some fluid drained and he was happy and active for about a week till he got really poorly and needed put to sleep. It was one of the most traumatic thing I've seen and I couldn't be with him when he died.

He's been cremated and I've got his ashes. He was 2 years and 7 months and now its been two or three months. I think about him everyday and miss him.

Question Abnormal grooming?

My hamster has been grooming himself/nibbling for over 10min like this, and I’ve never seen it before.. does it look worrying or am I just stressing out?
He did it for 8/9min, took a 1min nap, then started again for 5. Then he came out, found some food, stayed immobile for a bit and then took another nap in plain sight (he never does that)

Question My babys balding?

Post image
4 Upvotes

My 1.6yr hampster recently was treated for a burst cyst at the vet (his toe is better now and is just a little bald) but today I noticed his belly is bald and his sweat gland looks huge, i wipe it down a little with a warm water on a q tip and called his vet. Their booked up today and im on the wait list but im puzzled on why my baby's balding. Im a first time hammy parent so I wanna make sure im doing right, I plan on doing warm compresses to hopefully break up the gunk before his visit

not typing much bc im scared and js need advice hes kept getting these growths and he has this one on his face and it’s progressively gotten bigger and I think it’s making it hard for him to breathe or something. He’s never squeaked before and he seems distressed and keeps trying to pull it off I’ve called the local veterinary hospital places, and the place that I bought him and none of them have specialists that will take rodents. I don’t know how to help him and I don’t know if he’s dying. hes like 4 and a half so hes quite elderly. I just want to know hes okay.

Question Worried my hamster won't recognise me when back from holiday

Hey guys! I'm on holiday for 2 weeks and have left the care of my sweet girl in the hands of my cousin. I know she'll look after her. My hammy has never been away from my smell before. She's very social and loves people, but will always be calmer when she recognises she's with me. It's a week into my holiday and my cousin has sent me lots of updates. However, she looks a little stressed. All she wants to do is eat the corner of their carpet. They're looking after her just fine, she just can't really settled when handled. I understand that she's in a new environment with new smells without my scent there. I'm just worried she won't recognise me when I'm back and she'll still be as stressed.

Has anyone else had to have their hammy looked after by family? I've never loved a hamster so much before. She's my baby. Thanks guys!!

The rescue said she was brought to them after someone found her abandoned at a playground in a hamster ball :(

She handled the hour long drive amazing and kept popping up out of the bedding to get snacks.

No more hamster balls and now she has a nice enclosure to run around in. I haven’t seen her since yesterday but she loves her wheel and already ran 4 miles last night. She’s just over a year old

She got to try mealworms for the first time and loves them.
