Discussion Would Harry's story been different if even one adult had been consistently honest with him?

So many adults in Harry’s life either hide information from him, make decisions for him, or tell him things when it’s already too late. Do you think Harry would’ve made better decisions if the adults around him had been more honest, or were some things always going to happen regardless?
I’m curious which specific conversation you think would’ve changed the most.

Book 5 specifically made no sense to me on this front. Why couldn’t Dumbledore have told Harry “I can’t talk to you until you master Occlumency because I suspect Voldemort is using you to try to get information about the Order and me, and don’t believe any visions you’re having from him because he could be manipulating them”?

That would serve two purposes: Prevent Harry from doing something stupid based on his visions and motivate Harry to take Occlumency more seriously.

In fairness Harry was told multiple times that Voldemort could send him fake visions to lure him out

Kinda yes, but they could’ve been way more explicit. Instead of just being annoyed when he saw the dreams with the door, Snape could’ve told Harry “Voldemort is trying to lure you to that door. Do NOT go there under any circumstances — it’s definitely a trap. There’s something there only you can retrieve, so he needs YOU to go there and will do anything in his power to trick you into going there.”

Sure he still might’ve gone, but there would’ve been more of a fighting chance of him realizing it’s a trick.

I agree they could have been more direct with him but there’s something else to consider.
Harry knew this was a possibility even Hermione was telling him this was likely a trap.

Harry did calm down a bit to think rationally.

So 2 things to consider.

1, he had a vision of Arthur which turned out to be real.

2, he did try to call Sirius, he used the fireplace and found Kreacher who he asked where Sirius was.
Kreacher told him Sirius went missing a while ago and that he’s not in the house.

Kreacher was annoying Sirius who told him to leave, he meant for him to just leave the room but Kreacher took that as a chance to leave the house, to which he went to bellatrix and told her everything and Voldemort came up with this plan.

So when Harry contacted him Sirius and Remus were up with buckbeak and Kreacher lied. This confirmed Sirius really was being tortured cause he wouldn’t just leave the house.

So yes I think he would have still gone thanks to this information

Fair point, but still, earlier in the book, Dumbledore could’ve explained to Harry why he was ignoring him, such as after the underage magic hearing. Would’ve made more sense because he’s actively damaging their relationship which he values and knows it’s important to keep Harry’s trust for when he’s ready to tackle the Horcruxes.

And they also know Harry and that he plays the hero and wants to always save his friends. If anything, after the Arthur incident they should’ve driven home the point more that the visions could be fake.

I mean he wasn’t more direct because it would’ve ruined the plot if Harry didn’t go to the Ministry obviously, plus it wouldn’t have been great writing to repeat like 10 times “Harry, DON’T ever go to the Ministry on your own.” But that’s how I would’ve handled a teenager who has a history of breaking the rules, for better or worse, to save people. It seems like for a full year they all forgot Harry’s personality.

Because it could have let Voldemort know that Dumbledore was aware of the connection.

And…? Why does that matter? The Order wasn’t using the connection strategically.

I'm guessing here, but I'd wonder if he'd be concerned that Voldemort would understand the nature of the connection, and realize that Harry became a horcrux in some way.

Interesting. That’s a possibility. Still, it seems Dumbledore was aware that Voldemort knew there was some connection, so Dumbledore telling Harry doesn’t really give Voldemort any new info.

Spoiler theory:

Voldemort can see through Harry him being an horcrux and all so the teachers were probably told not to reveal too much to him.
